24 hours Inside a Japanese MANGA CAFE

  • Here’s the proof that Japan is living in the future.
Japan Van Life Ch 42: Life in a Manga Café
Internet cafes (known as 漫画喫茶, “Manga Kissa”) in Japan have come a long way from being a place to simply read manga, use a computer, and sip coffee! Comic cafes in Japan are no longer just made for teleworking or reading. At 快活CLUB (“Kaikatsu Club”, AKA Cheerful Club), you can easily spend 24 hours “living” inside a manga cafe because there’s so much to do at a really affordable price.
In fact, it’s actually a pretty common travel hack for people on a small budget to sleep overnight in a manga cafe booth, and since they come kitted out with padded foam mat and/or comfy gaming chairs, blankets, and slippers it’s easy to relax in peace! Depending on the store, you can also reserve VIP sofa rooms that can accommodate as many as 4 people and some stores even have VR headsets and bright and airy women-only areas to ensure you are living your best Japan life.
Manga cafes often get a bad rep and conjure up ideas of sweaty nerds living in a capsule hotel booth, and while we do fit the weaboo/otaku unshowered stereotype, we’re here to dispel the bad rumours about Japanese net cafes and explain all of the services available for people traveling on a budget! Today we’re showing you how we spend our days off editing vlogs from our Japan travels, how vanlifers in Japan take showers, and giving you an inside tour of a Japanese manga cafe (and we’re VERY ready to take a shower after a cold night of snowy vanlife!). The only hitch? The shower has a time limit of 15 minutes 🥲
    The full list of services:
All you can eat breakfast “morning” bar (bread and french fries) from 6:00 - 10:30
    Unlimited drinks bar (including soups)
All you can eat soft serve ice cream
    Food & alcohol menu
    Shower
Hair dryer and hair curling/straightening iron
    Free bath and face towels
    Coin laundry machines
    Blankets
    Slippers
    Reading lights
    Locker for valuables
    Manga comic library
    Magazine library
    Power/USB outlets
    Free Wi-Fi
    Online anime collection
    Cinema (Watch movies, anime, TV)
    Video games
    Gaming PCs
    Microsoft Office software
    Gym
    Darts
    Pool (Billiards)
    Karaoke
    Massage seats
    Private room with key
    Free parking
(We opted for the cheapest available option, the “nomihoudai” all-you-can-drink café, which gave us free use of the showers and power outlets, unlimited soft serve ice cream and drink bar, and access to 1000s of manga, magazines, anime, and free Wi-Fi!)

OMG, I had no idea or conception that such places existed. Would have been good to know back when i was backpacking around Japan on a budget. Thanks for the tip even though I no longer budget travel

Haha even with a big budget it’s a fun experience for one of those “only in Japan” type of feels 😆

That's such a unique concept and very cheap for what they offer.

I don’t know why it hasn’t caught on anywhere else! Maybe people are deterred by the idea of it just being a comic library? 😅

That looked like had basically everything you needed, though having a lounge chair or massage chair would have been amazing. I wonder how many people use them for manga and how many use them for their facilities. 😊

    • @OshareJapan
      @OshareJapan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

They have massage chairs tooo! But you have to pay I think and we’re basic beeches so 🥲😂
The times we’ve visited the “cafe” areas, it’s mostly people reading manga but you do get a few people studying. It’s also a decent place to hang out with friends if you want to do karaoke cheaply and bring food in too!

Thank you! We weren’t sure how many people would enjoy seeing this kind of thing, but it’s such a unique concept and integral part of our vanlife that we thought it was worth showing (including the carb fest 😂)

If you googled foods to avoid for having no nutritional value or accelerating the aging process, then the top of list are 1. fries 2. white bread 3. ice cream 4. preserved fruit juices. Loos like you guys have hit the trifecta there ( and then some) :)))

As long as one had a job that can be done remotely, even if it didn't pay a lot, someone could live in that cafe, avoid spending for rent, transportation, utilities, some meals, and other expenses. Maybe even save up some money.

    • @OshareJapan
      @OshareJapan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’ve heard that some manga cafes actually offer long stay and rental plans! It’s almost tempting 😆

😆😆 The breakfast was really something 😆😆
Now I want to try a sandwich with fries and ketchup 😁😁
I heard that there were people living in manga cafes, but I never saw how a manga cafes looks like from the inside! It was really interesting to see that the most necessary things are available so that you could actually really live there - bed, toilet, shower, washing machine, warm water, warmth and unlimited soft Ice 😆
And it was really a great to see you posting the new years post cards!!! It was so cool to see how you preparing them and sending them off, knowing that mine was also in between 😊
And really cool to see the place where they were sent from 😆😆
Thank you for making and sharing your journey ❤️
I really enjoy watching your videos 🙏

Nothing like carbs on carbs to fuel you for the day 😅🙈 If it weren’t for the lack of natural light, I could definitely live in a manga cafe (I mean it’s not much of a jump from living in a van to be fair 😂)
Thank you 🥺❤️ We should’ve filmed picking the postcards up in our new year too and then you would have seen its whole lifecycle! I think this might have been our most “local” postcard drop yet 😆. Thank you for watching and being part of it all 🥰❤️

Manga in Canada is $13.99 or more sometimes. It can be an expensive hobby.

    Is there manga in English?

    • @OshareJapan
      @OshareJapan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Without looking extensively, I’d have to only guess and say no, especially for older titles, but they do have a QR code that lets you access manga on your phone so there might be a chance of finding some there or at least screenshotting and translating 😅. We’ll confirm next time we visit one!

Nothing like a carb sandwich. Ultimate is a sausage roll in a sandwich. After all that, did you have any time to read any manga. ?

Omg 😳 adding that to my food bucket list now haha
And in all the times we’ve used them, neither of us have ever actually sat down with a manga to read 😅🙈 (not that we wouldn’t like to though!)
