  • The first job shown here is making a couple of shallow bends in handles cut from 13mm x 5mm (or 1/2" x 3/16") flat steel bar. The tool is basically a vee bending tool but with a round bar used at the top to give a gentler bend. The bottom tool (the die) was made by welding some angle "iron" pieces to a steel plate with some brackets added so that an adjustable stop plate can be screwed in place.
The second job is making 4 bends in small aluminium plates in one "hit". The top tool, or punch, is a milled steel block welded to a spigot (that fits in the ram of the press). The die is just some suitably sized steel strips bolted through a base plate with a couple of angle pieces on each side to locate the part.
Both tools shown here are bolted to Hunton bolsters which are then mounted on the presses.

Have you tried bending 5251h22 alu at near to 90 degrees. Wondering how some 5mm 5251 will cope with that sort of bend on a fairly tight radius?

Just tried a small scrap piece & it's pretty grainy on the outside of the bend with an internal radius of about 3.5mm...

@@MidEngineering great thanks. I've been wondering how to make a solid alu bracket forto support my roof rack. Don't really want to weld them so I'll order a few scraps and give them a go. Thanks for your help
