X according to sbnation (where Jon Bois is from) in 2017 1036 kickoffs were returned. 7 of those 1036 returned kickoffs were touchdowns. About 0.06 percent of kicks. Did I also mention that this was before the touchback was at the 25 yard line? It is also a common known fact that the kickoff is one of the most dangerous parts of football. Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy said that based on statistics gathered from the league showed that injuries happened 5 times as often than all other plays. Yes they were fun to watch just in case your team gets a huge return but now with the recent rule change in 2018, the kickoff touchback rate went from 17% to 48%! Half of your glorious kickoffs end in a player sitting down in his end zone so that the ball can be put for him at the 25 yard line. It ruins the fun but the injury rate goes down 38%. I do understand that kicking off is a really cool feeling and is iconic. But why not just get the game going? What would you rather see? Your favorite team’s quarterback with 15:00 minutes in the first quarter gain more yardage than they probably would have on a kickoff, or just see an injury prone dangerous boring play in which half of the time, the player just downs it. In summary, kickoffs are extremely useless, are a huge risk to player safety and are extremely boring. It seems like you’ve gotten some concussions on these kickoffs

The whole point is that onside kicks are suppose to be incredibly hard to recover. When you score, the other team is suppose to get the ball. If my team is up 3 TDs near the end of the game, that means they EARNED it and deserve the win.... but all that can go out the window now that it would be A LOT easier for the other team to convert a 4th and 15th.

Ryan this is true, but I stand by what I said. The randomness of how the ball bounces made onside kicks so crazy. An extra possession gives a team an insane advantage. Teams will eventually get really good at this and “onside kicks” will become almost normal.

    • @riffbw
      @riffbw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

I think 3rd and 15+ plays were hovering between 12 and 17% conversion rates and 4th and 15+ were in the single digits. This isn't easy. It also allows a prevent defense where you don't have to defend the catch, you just have to make the tackle in front of you. It's going to be mostly a passing down too which also helps the defense.
You've got to remember the tradeoff is your opponent gets the ball between the 25 and 39 going in.

I think the NFL need to adopt the XFL kickoff's with everyone lined up down the field, and then if a team elects an onside kick (unlimited as well) they do the normal on side kick routine. Keeps the returners employed and seemed to reduce the risk of injuries to inline with the rest of the game

doing it just twice doesnt exclude just scoring first taking ur first 4/15 maintaining possession scoring again (now ur 14 points up) doing it again maintaining it again to get another 7 giving you a potential 21 point lead before half. How to make football kick-offs safe and exciting.
1, Kicks that first land out of bounds (even beyond the endzone) are a first and 10 for the receiving team at the 50.
2, Move the kick-off to the 50 yard line.
3, Kicks that land in the field of play, and roll out, the receiving team gets the ball at the point it crossed the sideline.
These rules combine to do the following.
1, encourage the kicking team to put the ball in play. Kicks out the back of the endzone will result in the receiving team getting the ball at the 50 yard line, but a kick that lands in the end zone and then goes out of play results in a touchback.
2, forces the return team to spread out their team. Because a kick that lands in play and then goes out of bounds at the 8 yard line, would result in the return team getting the ball at their 8 yard line, it would result in a return team that is spread out.
3, failed on-side kicks will result in the receiving having a longer distance to cover to score. Because the kick-off is at the 50, a failed on-side kick would result in aproximatly a 60 yard drive to score, a 50% increase over the current 40 yards.

New rule definitely needs some serious tweaking. This is going to change offensive strategy with more 4th down attempts.
A meaningful rule change goes back to the old AFL. Widen out the hashmarks opens up the long pass, changes defensive strategy as now there's a true short and long side of the field, and field goals more difficult as the angles more severe.

I mean the pass interference rule change was a pretty dumb change, it’s kinda ruined a lot of games since it’s introduction

      No it's a good change

@@xdifficultviper9916 it ruined absolutely zero games. The rule was fine, the league was just unclear as to whet would be overturned. For the most part it did nothing to change what was called on the field.

Having played to kick off is one of the best aspects of the game guys running full speed to take fuckers out, amazing some of the best moments in f the nfl have come in kickoff on both sides of the ball
