    Pretty nerdy video today. I go over a couple quick tips including adjusting the input impedance setting on your helix as well as some EQ moves I've adopted in helping me get a better and more mix ready, metal guitar tone, faster.
    I also go over a handful of my favorite Ownhammer impulse responses. Those include:
    OH 212 ORNG V30 160-06
    -Based on an Orange PPC212 2x12 Cab
    -with Celestion V30 speakers
    -using a Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon microphone
    OH 412 TRAD V70 121-00
    -Based on a Mesa Boogie Traditional Straight 4x12
    -with 70 watt Celestion Vintage 30 Speakers
    -using a Royer R121 Ribbon Mic
    OH 412 UBKR T75 OH2F
    -Based on a 2002 rear loaded Bogner Uberkab 4x12 cabinet
    -with1991 Celestion T3760 “skunk stripe” G12T-75 speakers
    -“OH2F” is based on a more “fat” sounding 421 + 121 mic combination
    -“421” is based on a vintage Telefunken MD421-5 dynamic microphone.
    -“121” is based on a Royer R121 ribbon microphone.

    This channel is really good. Thank you. You miiiiight have convinced me to keep my helix after watching you tone shape. It took me all day yesterday to find something even remotely as good as N-DSP, but after watching a few more videos I found some stuff.

    Great video as always, dude!
    In terms of IRs I did something similar to not get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options everytime. I first got the HH1 collection und just used the provided mixes from the quick start folders of every cab with a particular speaker/combination. I then narrowed it down to the speaker/combinations I liked and kicked out the others for each cab. After that I narrowed it again by filtering out the mixes I liked best. It turns out I almost everytime gravitate towards the OH1 mixes. You could go ahead from there and try out the single mics used in the mixes you chose and see if they represent the tone you are looking for even more precisely, but for me the mixes always win over the single mics. I went through the same process for the HH2 collection as well and found the same results. My goto IRs are the OH 212 ZLSF M25+V30 OH1-05 and the OH 212 ZLSF V30 OH1-05. I just love this Zilla cab! :)
    Cheers from Germany!

  • @ViolenDarkstalker
    @ViolenDarkstalker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    While I realize you build metal guitar tones, the impedance control in the guitar block is paramount for people using a "raw" (unprocessed) Piezo pickup. This makes this unit even more attractive to people who play Upright basses as well as instruments like acoustic guitars or violins with aftermarket/attached pickups.

    I assume lowering the impedance will come in handy if you are using really bright pickups like singlecoils in teles or strats. for a metal tone with a balanced pickup like the duncan solar all the way up seems the way to go.

    my advice. Listen with bass and drums in the mix, as it mask a lot of frequency in the high and in the lows. In my testing, Ownhammer are pretty heavy on low mid around 500-700hz, cut from 3-6db.

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always sound advice to listen to things in the context of a mix. I’d caution that your claims that OH IRs are heavy at 500-700 absolutely depends on the IR/cab and guitar/pickups. The EQ moves I make in Helix are almost all adopted from the moves I make in my DAW, in a mix. Cheers!

    Nick, have you ever tried to put the EP Booster (Kirky 0 Gain, Boost on, Bright off) between the amp and IR/CAB? For me, it cuts fizzes without using a lot of EQ.

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. I would never think to put a boost after the amp. Sounds like it’s filtering the same as the initial boost or an EQ. Interesting

    I find ownhammer irs too dark sounding that i have to boost the presence and use an eq. I tried other ir brands and dont have to worry about that. the only thing i like about ownhammer is the clarity you can hear when playing.

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I roll all IRs off as well as my tone sometimes down to 6k. If you look at speaker response charts for just about any speaker, there’s a steep high end roll of that starts at around 6k, sometimes as low as 5k. I’ve never felt OH is dark. They definitely have dark mixes and depending on the mic, can lean dark, but I’ve not had that issue. Especially with the sheer amount of mic, mic placement options, mixes etc, I’d have a hard time labeling OH as dark. Obviously, different setups come into play.

    • @jorgeguitar2540
      @jorgeguitar2540 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickHillMakesMusic Thanks for the speaker info! i tried different guitars and cables. dont know what else could it be :/ i tried seacow cabs (which are free) and solved it. too bright and harsh that i had to now lower the presence on the amp and tone on the overdrive pedal. you should try them if you want and experiment, maybe no eq required.

    Why is it that IRs are always defaulted to -18db?

    • @NickHillMakesMusic
      @NickHillMakesMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably to avoid clipping as different companies shoot IRs in or at different volumes. Oddly enough, I still find IR blocks to be louder than that if stock cabs.

      You forgot the question mark..
      All kidding aside. I do get a bit annoyed with comments that don’t actually contribute anything useful. Do you have a preference for another brand’s IRs? If that’s the case, it’s cool. To simply comment with, “something sucks..” doesn’t add to any sort of discussion. What point were you looking to make? If it was just to be heard and seen. Cool. I get it. There are a lot of lonely trolls out there. I’d just prefer you didn’t do it here. Thanks man. Hope you have a good night.
