      Yes, and he chuckles to himself and shakes his bowed head, in its worn old cowboy hat, when he thinks about that little trick he once played, on a lone camper. He’d come up on the man who never even knew he was there - city dweller - so close if he’d been a buck, he’d have been plugged before he knew it. He had snuck into his tent and shot him - a picture of the man, that is - with the man’s own camera. He gets a little kick out of thinking how the man must’ve been surprised when he found out and couldn’t figure out how it happened on a lonely old Gold Rush trail in the Bush, a place forgotten by everybody... well, almost everybody

    I'm imagining it from Button Man's perspective too though. I mean if he knew this guy was trying to take his pic for days, it's really the ultimate troll move to sneak in and take a pics of the photographer with his own camera instead.

    My mum grew up in this area, just across the border into NSW, and I just asked her if she knew about the Button Man. She super nonchalantly said yes, and that the Alpine region (of both VIC and NSW) are incredibly remote with some "bad people" living there (her words). She says she doesn't remember much about the Button Man, but she is certain that she has heard the name. I'm going to ask my grandma about him as well to see if she remembers anything.
    I'll provide an update as soon as I learn anything.
    Edit: Turns out mum read something on the Button Man because it had to do with the area she grew up in. I did ask my grandma, but she looked at me quizzically as she had left the area /after/ he became well known. That said, she did mention that due to the remoteness of the area, it would attract people who didn't want to be found/left alone.

      I also forgot to mention the other urban legend in the area, known as the "child buyer," who would (as the name would suggest) buy children as farmers would cattle. 5:20 This is why you do not sleep alone outdoors. Seriously, don't do it. We invented robust homes with locked doors for a reason. If you want to be outdoors, do so with other people, sharing the great experience, and always be watching each other. It is not just protection in the dark of night, but also salvation if you have a critical medical emergency. Also have the best friend a camp could ask for: a vigilant dog or two. They have guarded us in our sleep for generations, and you will find far fewer people have ever been killed sleeping outdoors when they had dogs with them.

    Back in the 1990s, I would often go bushwalking and camping in the Alpine National Park. But there are some simple rules that must be followed and people are always advised but are often ignored. 1. Plan your trip and fill out an "Intentions Form" leave this with a trusted person. 2. Fill out the book that is placed along walking tracks. It is easy to get lost. This happened to me once, I thought I was on the right track but I wasn't. I used my map reading skills to get back to my camping ground. Back then the GPS was new and chewed up batteries. The guy at the Melbourne Map Shop advised me against buying one. If I was going bushwalking again I would probably have a modern GPS plus a map and compass.
    I would put the majority disappearances to lack of knowledge and filing a proper intentions report. Weather can change very fast without warning. On one visit It went from 30C sunny to misty and freezing.
    That being said the Alpine Nationa Park is so beautiful and if you have a chance then visit.

    What people may not know is that in Australia it's standard practice to give and get "We're OK" communications regularly. For example - If you tell someone you'll arrive at 6PM and don't show up, they'll go looking. There are no exceptions because the bush can be dangerous. There's something quite strange about so many people who know the bush and who are so well organized going missing at all. "Bush people" living in the bush are generally OK, but not always.
    The high country isn't "impassable" by Australian standards but it's often potentially difficult and pretty strenuous when climbing and descending. You can also get snow and of summer heat, both potentially very risky. The country is no real problem for an experienced bushwalker, but tricky if you're not. One fall or slip can incapacitate you, and then you're in serious trouble. Getting lost isn't a good option; if you do, you can wander for days.
    Word of advice for foreigners - If you come out here, pay attention to all the safety tips, don't go off on your own, and be careful, or you might wind up on Bedtime Stories.

    The Button man just sounds like a misunderstood Bush Man. He probably realised that the photographer was there to try & get a photo of him & so decided to play a prank on him. You can tell he wasn't malicious as he only took HALF of his waster supply. He left the photographer with all his equipment & left him with enough water & food to get back to a population centre. I imagine there's plenty of people who have just had nice chats with him. It also seems as tho he leaves the carved button & other carved trinkets as things for people to find on their walks as little keepsakes. Sounds like a nice, misunderstood bloke to me :)

    I spent a lot of time there over 2 decades ago, came across bush hermits a few times. They always have a dog with them, they keep their distance and dont engage. One time though we came across an old man who had claimed to have walked a few months all the way from Sydney and was heading to Melbourne to see his sick brother. Was near the wonangata valley. He was a nice old guy. Looked really suprised to see us and obviously had not spoken to anyone in awhile. Another thing was I heard a warning of a river that runs through the centre of the wonangata valley in the most remote part. Warning was dont cross the river/stream. This area is only accessible by walking or horse. Apparently in the 60's someone part of a group decided to challenge that warning and set his tent up just across the stream. When he woke up one of his legs was missing, apparently cleanly cut/sliced as though surgically, strange aswel was the leg wasnt bleeding and he survived. Could be a story. But we didnt test it. Another story was in the 70s a man suddenly grabbed his rifle and left his group running into the bush, as others in the group spun around they saw a black furred creature quickly disappear into the bush ahead of him -some that saw the creature reckoned it almost looked like a black panther. He wasnt heard of or seen again for a couple of weeks though he was searched for. Then suddenly he appeared back white as a sheet and clothes torn, he walked in to the main camp said nothing to anyone, handed his rifle in and left on foot for the nearest road. Never to be heard from again. I heard later that in ww2 there was a US air unit stationed in that region or thereabouts and they had a male and female panther as mascots. End of the war they were ordered to put them down but apparently some of them couldn't bring themselves to it so they went out to the edge of where they thaught was isolated enough for the cats to just disappear and live out there lives. But who knows maybe they bred and well life has a way of surviving so inbred black panthers isnt in the way of impossibilities. These are stories told to us by older guys in that region round a fire and they were told them by those that came before.

    if your interested in mysterious unexplained places in Australia, black mountain is Australia's bermuda triangle, mamy people avoid and highly recommend staying away from it, and inside it is underground caves which many people have gone missing exploring

    "The coroner again..." How is there a coroner if there's no body??????

    • @liamdayetti
      @liamdayetti 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      In Australia a coroner is a bit different. They are more of an investigator, they have legal training rather than medical. Often they are used to review unsolved or complex cases. Reviewing all the available evidence, reviewing what the police may have done wrong or missed. Quite different to the Us

    • @SightSeeker22
      @SightSeeker22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, they're probably part of the investigation team, and it's likely their job to report on the final possible outcome of the persons remains.

    I’ve hiked and camped all over the US. I’ve Spent many nights alone. I always camp off trail and find the high ground. I never make camp fires or keep food where I sleep. My clothes and gear are dark or natural colors. I generally avoid other people where possible.i carry bear spray and have occasionally carry small caliber hand guns. I have become Leary of solo travel and these days and I use the buddy system when I back pack.
