Love this channel. You’re fun to watch. I watch it on break from my own 1886 project. LOL. Happy to hear Kaleb stopped by and is coming back to his channel. Yeehaa❤
My Grandfather made the laundry chute for the house I grew up in. It was kind of a wooden square, box-type structure that was suspended under the 'drop' by 2 x 4s attached to the joist boards, and it had a door for easy unloading. He was a good carpenter, and it was really nice. (furniture grade with smooth finish so as not to snag clothing)
We had a laundry chute in the old days. We had a large laundry cart under the chute, like in comercial laundries. Mom would roll over to the washer and dryer. 8 of us in the family...LOTS of laundry.
Such a cool place and its cool Kaleb came to see you guys. I've been wondering where he was. Suppose he needed a bit of a break after all the work he has been doing with his dad. He definitely seemed a bit stressed in his last few videos. Can't wait to see him come back. In the meantime I can watch you guys a bit. I'm not sure what an original laundry chute would look like but Id probably wall it back in and have a little pull out with a hamper inside.
I would say an equally important question is how to get the clean laundry back upstairs. Some kind of dumbwaiter/ laundry drop combo sounds good to me. Wouldn't want to traverse all the stairs carrying loads of laundry.
Your basement walls are in better shape than ours in a 1978 ranch. LOL. We really miss Caleb. Wonder where the drain goes? It is funny about the brick in the floor. I wrote a short story and the old house had a tunnel from the main house to the guest house and they kept their liquor there during prohibition.
THe basement will look really nice after you work on it. It doesn't look creepy at all. Will be an awesome place for hobbies etc. The stone floor in the room at the bottom of the stairs will look great once done up
I am so happy you will replace all those aluminum doors and window frames with more authentic reproductions. The first time you showed your place I saw those aluminum storm doors and trim and groaned lol. I can't wait to see what is under the bricks. My first thoughts were that it was an old cistern but I like your tale much better. Great video.
Thinking of any our old houses in Pella that had laundry chutes. I will try to remember. I’ve seen plenty of basements like yours. A friend finished theirs and it turned out nice.
I have actually been in a house that was owned by a regular family were all of their gaselier’s worked. They had three or four children that lived in the house also and they would turn the gas on and light the lights like it was no big deal. So I know 100% it can be done
Great to hear about Kaleb! Love the puns. Maybe the pit was in use during construction and was closed up shortly after, explaining the doorway? However, that doorway might not be original, since there seems to be a patch (just speculation, see left side of doorway at 25:41). Happy New Year!
I completely believe that that vacuum can still be used. Any Machinist can make your replacement caps that are missing if you only have one. The motor can be checked out and serviced by the same Machinist. Then of course run power to the machine and it’s ready to go. The hardest part would be finding or having adapters made for some kind of a vacuum hose to go to the ports in the wall. Then again a good Machinist could make some thing attached to a hose that you could use to vacuum. Might not be practical for every day use But fascinating for a working display
A historical home in Champaign County, Ohio, has sunken space in the floor for its original boiler. Perhaps rhe "Iron Giant" was your home's second boiler? I'm just throwing out hypotheses. I miss Caleb. Yes, he seemed stressed working in two restorations. Like others have stated, "hopefully, he returns soon." I do live crossover presentations. My old has too has lots of sustem items hanging from, in between, the floor joists. Yes, the old wiring and new wiring, old & new plumbing, and what I believe to be an expansion tank for the former boiler heat system?
I enjoyed the tour. I know the people on the fireplace sometimes are like Robin Hood and Maid Marion so if you ever find that out you'll know who they are. The cellar door was made so well. I love the screen doors , you don't see those anymore and here you have them such a treasure. The gasoleers had beautiful glass globes. You forgot to include the picture of you squishing Kaleb with a hug, I know you have it somewhere if you could find it and include it that'd be great. 😁 I know his channel and love the old painting they had done. Kim looked amazing. There was some man that had a channel that had his radiators done by a company.I could look that up and Janie in Galveston works on her big home and had a cistern that reminded me of your square area in the basement. Hers led to catacomb like tunnels all below her house. ( Leading short distances) Do you have an attic?
They are. There are a couple more in the other rooms that you probably couldn’t see. Put in by a previous owner in 2001 for reasons unknown. As we’ve been unable to contact him. He’s also the one responsible for most of the damage here and we think they were for extra support for the black and white checker marble floor he put in throughout the 1st floor. Since removed.

Can't wait to see if that will work. Got 42 windows to do and have test fitted the few I found and they look great compared to the aluminum

One of the doorways was modified as well wasn't sure if it would he that noticeable and forgot to mention that
Ahh, I see!
Thanks for the basement tour!

100% agree been keeping eye on ebay for parts. Especially the caps and wand. Will never remove it and who knows maybe one day
Great video!! Thank y'all!
Maybe the brick square in the basement floor could be an old well?

I think its goes down into another space! That's what I first thought when you showed it .
Would Diebold in Canton, Ohio have records of such a huge old safe? The underground tunnel story is fascinating! Awesome Tour!
I hadn't thought of that thanks I'll have to research that
@@JamesABeckHouse Glad to be of service.
@@JamesABeckHouse I wonder if your house is documented in the1933 Historic American Building Survey (HABS) www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/hh/
If they don't, perhaps the local historical society? Firms have been known to donate their old files to such? It's worth a look.

Lol your right I do have that picture. We di have an attic nothing easy assessble large space rafters etc. Use to have a huge Bat problem.
If there was a laundry box under my shoot. It was already gone when i got there. My dad made one with the peg board he had in his shop
Cistern? Looks like my basement, spider webs and all.
Are those three pipe like columns at the bottom of the stairs floor jacks?

root cellar??
Im curious if your turret goes straight up to the shaft or if it has a ceiling???
Ceiling. We have another video. Tower and Ballroom that show that if you're interested
Ceiling. We showed that in another video not too long ago..The Tower and Ballroom if your interested
@JamesABeckHouse I'll check it out, thank you.
Maybe the bricks are the tunnel sealed up.
Coal shoot?
