    Seems to me that Mary was hell bent on revenge for Cranmer annulling her parents' marriage. Once he denounced his religion, he should have been pardoned, but Mary personally intervened so that he should indeed burn at the stake. I wonder why he didn't leave England when Mary was crowned queen? He must have known he was in trouble, even back then!! I can't imagine why he stayed.

      It might be that he knew his flight would destroy the credibility of the new faith. Or perhaps he did not believe that Mary would kill him.

      Of course, Mary wanted Cranmer executed, this there was no doubt. He was after all the one who declared her a bastard and committed treason supporting the abortive coup of Jane, Hugh Latimer had resigned as bishop to join the Reformed Movement opposing Henry's Articles of Faith. Ridley was an out and out Reformed. They were Calvinists not merely Anglicans. Neither had received papal permission for their ordinations. This fact permitted their quick execution and their trial for heresy was an open and shut case. Not so with Cranmer, who had received papal permission. Cranmer could not flee ... where could he go? France? the Spanish Netherlands? Holy Roman Empire? Wherever he made landfall he would have been arrested. One only has to remember that Tyndale did flee England and was captured by and returned to England where he was found guilty of heresy and burned at the stake by Cranmer himself. There was no way out for him. Remember who Mary's husband was ... there was nowhere for Cranmer to flee to.

      @@somyod2u No, the execution was the correct decision when it came to Cranmer. If we forgave everyone, well we are going to have every murderer running loose in society. Cranmer was for worse than any murderer. He had been the architect of the execution of many innocent people Justice must be served. However, we KNOW Mary did make the correct decision in this regard, Cranmer reverted to heresy when he knew his goose was cooked. His abjuring of heresy was in bad faith after all.

    What a fool Mary was! Publication of Cranmer's recantation and letting him live afterwatds would have been damaging to the new faith while these grim executions made martyrs.

      My relatives in England own a pub that has been standing since the 13th century. The Bell pub. It hasnt always been The Bell, but there has always been a pub/tavern in that spot. It was originally a tavern/lodging house used by stone masons working on a local church, which also still stands. Buildings in Europe go way way back. Some of them are older than the US itself lol.

    A lot of people are asking why Cranmer didn't flee England when Mary assumed the throne. By the time of his death he was 66 years old and I'm sure he had a whole host of health problems that few know about. Relocating to the continent at his age was most-likely simply unfeasible.

    Thomas Cranmer must have been an optimist a fool or a very brave man not to flee when Mary took the crown. That said, when he recanted his protestant faith he must have felt deep fear, as only a sane person would. For him in the end to embrace his faith and die for it was the act of a very brave man. All of this in the name of religions! Thank you Claire for your clear delivery. 🐕🐈🔔

Not a soul at peace.

    • @pbohearn
      @pbohearn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All I can say it was brutal back then, during the reigns of Catholic and Protestant Tudor Monarchs. That’s the problem with the absolute authority and rule of the monarchy not held in check by a counter strong institution. Really the Catholic Church was the only thing holding many of these monarchs in check, and I believe that authority that limited his freedom bothered Henry as much as his inability to be granted an annulment by said authority. He didn’t want to have to ask- he was King! And by taking that drastic step to break off, and be excommunicated, he was no longer accountable for anything to anybody. Cool for him. And what they call a judicial system? as far as I can tell it was a total joke. People were hauled off and tortured for confessions. if you’re on the rack I’m sure you’ll say just about anything, including that you xxxx’d your sister when you didn’t. But that’s all the king needs- a confession from somebody- off with her head! if the monarch wanted somebody to die, they would die. All the rest was just for show it’s just ceremony; it’s kabuki theater. And it being kabuki theater, at times those accused used those precious moments to defend themselves the best they could, but it was almost always to no avail. Who was ever judged innocent after being arrested? . Being arrested meant you were counting the days. Unless you were rescued.
      Now with all of Cranmers renunciations; was Queen Mary on some sort of vindictive humiliation trip? taunting this fellow with a potential pardon, keeping him going with more renunciations, but irrevocably slipping down that muddy slope to the flames and the wooden post? I don’t know, and I don’t know how personal it was for her in terms of the execution being directly caused by her 20+ year resentment over her parents’ annulment. I suspect many factors were in play and many advisers were consulted. But one we do know is that She also was, like her mother, an extremely devout Roman Catholic, who held onto her faith at great risk for many years, and perhaps in her extreme fundamentalist/Spanish Catholicism really felt like this was a spiritual war she was called upon to defend against heretics (aka Protestants), and she had to stop it. Kinda like The USA taking it upon themselves needing to stop the spread of communism in Southeast Asia: because it’s evil. (The evidence shows that wasn’t such a great crusade either). So I can’t speak for her motivations. However, I’m kind of surprised that he didn’t back away a bit from all of the documents and Doctrines that he was busily writing up for the new Protestant religion whilst the king was on his deathbed given that there was a damn good chance hed have a Catholic monarch forthwith. He didn’t even want to sign the document proclaiming Lady Jane Gray as next in line to the monarchy knowing that was just going to give him more problems, and it did. So, having also broken free from the Roman church to become top dog in England, I think he got way too involved in creating this new church, and was working under time pressure, and boy he did get a lot done but politically? A foolish decision. Then again, even the eloquent Sir Thomas More couldn’t wiggle out of Henry’s demand to acknowledge and submit to him as the Supreening Head Of the Church. LOL.

    That and the fact that he had recanted several times would have made it really hard to trust his word and actions.
    It’s sad he burned, but he must have known it was dangerous to stay in England when Mary I ascended the throne.
    It’s curious why he didn’t leave when that happened. Maybe he wasn’t well enough for such a journey?

      He actually had no where to run... remember Cranmer knew this very well. He is the one who payed of spies and conspirators to kidnap Tyndale and have him burned at the stake. Wherever he made landfall, he would have been arrested. Try and recall who exactly Mary's husband was. The only area out of her husband's sphere of control was France and France would have poured hot sulfur down his throat before being burnt at the stake ... Better take his chances with Mary rather than anywhere else. Cranmer declared Mary a bastard .... enough reason for treason and on top of all that supported Jane's coup

The role he played in setting up the "new church"and serving on the Privy Councils for so long is fascinating. I agree with the others who ask why did he not flee with the others when Mary became Queen. Cranmer had to know that Mary would be coming after him. Such a tragic end to an interesting and a very productive life. Thanks again, be well and be blessed.

Cramer devised the divorce of her parents, was a patron of the family Mary considered to be enemies, and ultimately supported the crown going to Jane after Edwards death. Of course Mary would have took revenge on him when she became queen. Cant say I blame her too much, but the burning at the stake was very extreme and unnecessary.

All together she had something close to 390 persons executed. Queen Elizabeth on the other hand had 4000 executed for religious reasons, and the rape of women to extract confessions was fairly routine. Her chief torturer Richard Topcliffe (read the wiki article about him) was permitted to take women to his private prison at times for his rape sessions.
