Yes, you can. Someone recently pointed this out to me. Turn the light off, then hold the camera button until it the rotating light activates. Now you have the camera without the taillight on.
I have the Magicshine seemee 200 and highly recommend it as it has been very reliable and really bright as well as having the other good things about it you likely already know about.i have only had one problem with it and that was it would not turn on but i let it run out of power then fully recharged it and it worked fine again.i have had it for nearly 18 months now.Olight rebrand them under the Olight brand name with their own specifications ❤ them...
Got one of these a few weeks ago and found video stabiliity to be terrible meaning on anything but a perfectly smooth road footage jumps around nausiatingly. But found out that this is almost entirely caused by the pathetic rubber mount allowing the camera to bounce about over every bump. I've now secured mine by bodging another mount to the seatpost and base of the camera to stop it bouncing around and video quality has now improved hugely
That's a great tip, I didn't realize the mount was partially to blame. I'm hopeful future versions of the taillight add image stabilization, it seems like a feature most cameras have these days.
Let us know when you've tested it in the rain. I wonder whether it's waterproof. I've got a pair of Australian brand Cycliq, from last year's iteration. A fellow bike rider here says an older version wasn't waterproof and drowned stone cold dead. The hunt remains for a good quality, affordable, waterproof bike cam.

You'd be kinda foolish to use it with no mudguards tho as it's lens is positioned right in the firing line from road spray otherwise.
I've been using mine for the first time this week. And as you say, anything other than a perfectly smooth road surface produces the most jumpy videos I've ever seen. _Good luck finding a smooth road in the UK!_ 😂 So I did the same, just put a small piece of self-adhesive rubber foam between the light and my seat post clamp. It's not perfect, but the footage is now far superior to before. Now I just get mildly jittery footage. 😁

A few times I've ridden home in properly heavy rain and upon arriving home found the camera to be showing the white camera light (error) and has needed the SD card removed and refitted to reset it. Around New year after a particularly wet commute it just wouldn't turn on at all and I had to send it back for it to be reset (no idea what was done). Seems like the SD cover can't handle torrential rain. Light rain hasn't ever been an issue. I almost never check the footage as the software is so bad and looking through tons of short clips is too laborious. Wouldn't buy one again.
The claimed runtime in eco mode is 10h with the camera on, however, I think other people have mentioned you can also turn off the taillight entirely and extend the runtime a bit more. Runtimes can vary a bit though between claimed value and actual runtime.
Can you just turn it on with just the camera and leave it running and either time it or check the footage at the start and finish to determine run time. You don't have to ride your bike, just put it on your desk or film a clock.
The most important things are the quality of image, eg image stabilization and shutter speed, and battery life. Eg the camera must be on when riding and rides can be all day.
Mine has just frozen with the green light the only one that shows. Put on charge last night and I wasn't able to get it on since. I emailed today so I'll see what they say.

Given Magicshine's rapid product releases I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with a matching front version either. They could easily adapt one of their Allty or RN headlights with a camera.
I have heard some people have issue that their devices only have the green light but doesn't function properly or even can't turn on. Both 2 of mine have the same issue but i managed to fix them and now they work properly.
@@TheSweetCyclists Warning: So the way i did requires dissassemling the device and might void warranty, i don't have warranty since i bought mine from unofficial seller, so i don't mind doing it. I did all the other methods (charging the device or changing the cable or pressing buttons hoping the device reset), all of that didn't worked for me. That's when i tried this medthod. This is how i did: +Disassembling: the device's aluminum housing has 2 parts: upper one (has a hole for the camera) and lower one (has window for the lights) There is a black rubber cover for the buttons on top of the device. It stays there by a not so sticky glue so i could pry it with finger nail. Then there are two small phillips screws holding aluminium housing together, unscrew them and carefully remove a white plastic pad. Next, slowly pull the lower aluminum housing apart, as i do it, i also pushed the camera inward the upper housing to disconnect the pin connecting the camera and camera lights. After that, i could fully access the electrical circuit (including the battery) and began the next step. +Begin the fix: The device is powered by a lithium 3,7 Volts battery. The trick is actually to actively discharge the battery by using any electrical load that is 3,7 Volt rated powered. In my case, i used a 3,7 volts rated mini DC motor because it can help discharging quickly therefor speed up the process. Don't try to pry the battery out because it is welded to the circuit. I used some spare copper wires to power the motor with battery, let the motor run for some time then disconect to let the motor cool down, after that let the motor run again sometime and then disconnect again. I kept doing it until the green light is off, that's when i needed to stop. When the green light stopped shining, i tried turning on the device again and it worked fine. All the functions work properly. After that i just reassembled the device. I did same trick for the my second device and it worked. The time to discharge the battery until green light is off varies depend on battery's current capacity. It took me around 5 minutes discharging the first one and 10 minutes discharging second one. Now it's been a month after the fix and both 2 of mine still works fine. Hope my experience can help you guys sorting out issues. Looking forward to hearing any question or problem regarding this issue from you guys
The top claimed runtime is 10 hours using the camera with the low output mode and in real-world riding you should expect to get near that. Having a rear camera is nice insurance if you do a lot of urban riding around cars.

By default the camera records 1 minute snippets (the app lets you increase that up to 3 minutes or turn it off) which means you don't get a full video clip. If you want to share longer video clips you would need to stitch things together. I believe you can do about ~1 hr of footage using the included 8gb card. Once it runs out of time it starts to override the previous data. You can use a 128 gb MicroSD card which should give you x16 more storage.
I bought one of these, and the video playback is so slow. Keeps buffering and only plays 1-2 seconds of video then freezes and keeps buffering. Any idea? Magicshine has no idea. Phone is a Samsung Note 10+, so that shouldn't be the problem.

That's a good question. By default it splits the video into 1 minute chunks (upto 3 minutes via settings or you can turn it off entirely) and not one continues video (you would need to stitch video together if you wanted to do a long clip). I haven't counted the exact total time but for 1080P/ 30 FPS video it should be about 1 hour of footage.
Give me a front+rear set with continuous loopong video and a remote to save last recorded minute like any other car dashcam and i'll take 3 sets immediately!
I think it's only a matter of time before Magicshine adds a front camera option as well. The taillight already does the continuous looping with clips from 1-3 minutes (1 minute by default).
The 110 hour runtime is for the 10 lumen eco flash mode with the camera off. For daytime riding I'd recommend using the higher flash mode instead though which cuts down the runtime.
I'm on the hunt for a rear daytime taillight. I'm thinking about the bontrager flare rt, Magicshine SEEMEE 200/150, or Cateye VIZ450. Cygolite not available in my country (Czech republic) Which one is best in broad daylight?
Definitely the Bontrager Flare RT! I own one myself and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. In my opinion it's the best bike light for VISIBILITY and RELIABILITY (my Flare R still works after 5 years, ION RT after 3 years and my Flare RT after 2 years with no problems). Just make sure to keep them at home when its cold especially in winter and use the oryginal cable when charging. Also make sure that the battery isn't fully uncharged even when you are not using it because it can damge or even shorten the bike lights life or operating time. In other words - Make sure that the bike light is ALWAYS charged even if not used. However, if you are interested in bicycle lights that have a lot of cool functions, for example braking mode, but are not visible from long a distance, only up close then I recommend Magicshine Seemee 200, because I had this bike light myself. Up close, it seems to be bright like all lamps, but from a distance it is very faint. I hope that I explained everything. Sorry for my bad English 😂 Have a nice day 👋
For daytime riding it's all about brightness + lens design. If you're on a budget I'd recommend the Planet Bike Rojo (nice focused LED and flash patten) or the Seemee 150 / 200. For a higher budget the Bontrager Flare R / RT are hard to beat and the Moon Sport Helix Sense 300 / 450 (450 lumen taillight!) are really nice. We've been using the Helix Sense 450 and you can see it from miles away.
The camera looks great, but the light is not. If MagicShine made a version with no light I would buy right now. An even better idea - a no light version with a GoPro mount at the bottom so you can attach whatever light or accessory you want to. I use an Exposure TraceR rear light and it is fantastic and will be using it no matter what. I have been searching for a camera for months to use with it. This is the closest to meeting all requirements so far - I might just buy anyway and not use the light functionality, however a version with no light would be ideal.
I agree. Magicshine should have incorporated a focused LED (like the Seemee 150 / 200 / 300 lights) to improve long distance visibility. A camera-only option would be interesting but given the size of batteries I'm not sure how much smaller it would be.

The taillight is water resistant, but you have to make sure the rubber covers on the memory slot and USB-C port are fully seated. If one of those are slightly open water can get in.
I find it odd that dashcams in general -for cars as well as this one- never feature any form of stabilization. It's as if the designers either live somewhere with perfectly smooth tarmac or they've never actually been on the road. Or maybe it's just that stabilization, whether optical or software, is still too expensive to be included in $100 cameras.
Yeah, but it's not for making a wide release movie. If an incident happens you stop the video at that precise point and take a screen capture of the license plate and face if possible; so it really doesn't matter if it's bumpy up to that point or not.
@@JonWrightson Only if you're lucky enough to have a useable, sharp frame, especially at night. On three separate occasions (different equipment in each case), I tried to do just that, but all frames we blurry to some degree. And the footage for one of those incidents ended up being split between the end of one file and the beginning of the next one, so I had about a second lost (not recorded) in between.
The App for use with this isn't just clumsy. It's absolutelty terrible. Both in functionality and user interface. and with the extremely poor user manual we're left to try and figure almost everything out by ourselves. After speaking to Magicshine it turns out some App settings aren't actually even implemented so do nothing. Video files are saved in annoyingly small lengths so a pain to sift through to find footage. There's no explanation of what the "looping" settings are meant to do but trying each different setting and OFF does nothing to change this. Incident detection also continuously saves the multiple SOS files. Presumably over any small bump.
Yes, the app is a bit of a disappointment. I'm not sure why they chose to go with that free dashcam app instead of something a bit more refined or an in-house app. Hopefully they will develop something a little more polished in the future.
If you just want to capture close-calls or accident footage, the bumpy Seemee DV video footage is sufficient. Otherwise, if you want riding footage I would suggest a GoPro or similar action cam which capture smooth footage.
You can see some of the sample image in the video which as legible license plates. If the cars are close enough, I think the camera can pick up enough detail.@@ericharman4064
Yes, it automatically writes 1-3 minute long clips and will replace old data once the card is full. You can also run it with no taillight on by just holding the camera button. The DV can be run camera only, both, or taillight only.

Hello, what is the default password to connect to car_dvr app? I'm trying to connect my seemee dv to the app but i don't know the password.
The password is "1234567890". It's listed in the user manual but easy to miss.
So you cant use this as a camera to see in back of you???
It's not intended to be a real-time "backup camera" but you could use it that way if you use the app and mount your phone on your handlebars.

The mount is a mini Garmin so it’s not compatible with Garmin mounts
Yes, it's smaller in diameter than a standard Garmin mount. If they had use a full size one, the mount would be wider than the taillight.
There’s another similar product , ToooCycling DV8.

And the footage for one of those incidents ended up being split between the end of one file and the beginning of the next one, so I had about a second lost (not recorded) in between.
The App for use with this isn't just clumsy. It's absolutelty terrible. Both in functionality and user interface. and with the extremely poor user manual we're left to try and figure almost everything out by ourselves.
After speaking to Magicshine it turns out some App settings aren't actually even implemented so do nothing. Video files are saved in annoyingly small lengths so a pain to sift through to find footage. There's no explanation of what the "looping" settings are meant to do but trying each different setting and OFF does nothing to change this.
Incident detection also continuously saves the multiple SOS files. Presumably over any small bump.
Yes, the app is a bit of a disappointment. I'm not sure why they chose to go with that free dashcam app instead of something a bit more refined or an in-house app. Hopefully they will develop something a little more polished in the future.
Poor Stabilisation is a no go on the current market, unfortunately.

If you just want to capture close-calls or accident footage, the bumpy Seemee DV video footage is sufficient. Otherwise, if you want riding footage I would suggest a GoPro or similar action cam which capture smooth footage.

You can see some of the sample image in the video which as legible license plates. If the cars are close enough, I think the camera can pick up enough detail.@@ericharman4064

Ok. Does it overwrite the data when card is full? Can you run the camera without the light (to put it on the front)?
Yes, it automatically writes 1-3 minute long clips and will replace old data once the card is full. You can also run it with no taillight on by just holding the camera button. The DV can be run camera only, both, or taillight only.
