For all the people confused about George saying he had the idea for Apocalypse Now, allow me to clarify that for you. Before Francis was ever involved in the project, the idea was originally conceived by George Lucas and John Milius. Basically, because he had too much on his plate, George kept delaying that project for years until Francis said he was interested in it, and George told him he could direct it himself.

Apparently Lucas and Coppola didn't talk for years, or at least became estranged, when Lucas abandoned Apocalypse Now to make Star Wars. When Star Wars was a hit though, Coppola asked Lucas for a bunch of money to bail out Apocalypse's budget.

To add on to this the Lucas version was drastically different. From what I recall in the Hearts of Darkness documentary, Lucas wanted to actually film the movie in Vietnam DURING the war. It’s a good thing that never happened as I cannot imagine it having gone smoothly.

George is an incredibly underrated creator if you ask me. A lot of people don’t know how brilliant he truly is. Wasn’t he sort of the Co-creator of Jaws?

It’s unfortunate that the reputation of the Prequels meant that many people retroactively give all the credit to Spielberg for how great the Indy trilogy was, when it was clearly a great combo of Writing/Directing between the two of them.

@Armageddon2077 This is straight from imdb: Lucas' initial plan was to shoot the movie as a faux documentary on location in South Vietnam while the war was still in progress... By the time both men (Lucas and Coppola) were powerful enough to get the film made, Saigon had fallen and Lucas was busy making Star Wars (1977). Milius (who was going to write the script for the faux documentary) had no interest in directing the film. Lucas then told Coppola that he could direct it

@40Pacino I do know that the movie 'Apocalypse Now' is based on the book Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad; so what is Lucas saying is he claiming that he had the idea for adapting it or something? Also, I know that Lucas and Coppola were close friends in their youth - so is Lucas saying that he had some influence on the project? Granted Harrison "Han Solo" Ford is in the movie for like five seconds - maybe Lucas introduced him to Coppola...

Both star wars original trilogy, and indiana jones trilogy, was two great trilogies, that should of been left to rest in peace.
Bringing them back, for both failed pretty badly, as these things always do, when people try and milk nostalgia, for some movie series in the past.
Timing is everything, and star wars and indiana jones trilogies, had there moments, and should of been left in the history books. Both excellent movie trilogies, until people wanted to add more.
