I Bought a £900 Mercedes S Class on Ebay - is it a Total Heap? (£1000 Luxobarge S1:EP1)

  • The first video in the £1000 Luxobarge series. One late night trawling ebay and i saw this 2002 S500 Mercedes on auction. It has almost 12 months of MOT and I thought if i could get it for under £1000 I would. I now need to assess how bad it is.. various warning lights are present and some rust... and need to decide what to do with it!

    Re the glove box try a couple of small neodymium magnets in the middle. That way you can the press the release button and pull the glovebox open using the recess. These things are strong so literally only use 1 on each surface.

    This all looks very familiar. I had an 02 CLK that displayed all of the warning lights you are seeing. I purchased a clone MB tool and reset the steering position sensor, bought a new servo (possible sensor problem) and other stuff to painful to list. In the end I removed the battery and battery holder - the wiring loom had been rubbed away and exposed some wires. It was a simple fix after that.Very poor build quality on this age of MB. Good luck

    You'll probably find there's a loose connection on one of the front cables which throws a sensor and then the ABS/ESP/BAS lights all come on. My CL does that after a battery is flat or when it's had some suspension work... Drive this car for a while - it'll get under your skin 😉

    This also coincided with the Diamler Chrysler merger. Chrysler was becoming a real money pit. The rear wheel drive Chrysler products are to this day based on a Mercedes E-Class from that era.
    The culture of Mercedes is very different than an American car company like Chrysler was. Mercedes lost all control of the product development process at Chrysler and during this period they had cars based on several architectures competing with each other and they were all garbage. A German company comes up with one good car and it replaces what was a good car. American car companies come up with weird concepts and niche ideas and Diamler greenlighted way too much stuff and it really started to suck the money out of vehicles like this in the mid-2000s.

    The 113 engine is one of the most reliable bullet proof engines Mercedes ever made. A lot of parts as you already know can be bought aftermarket at a fraction of the cost of so called original parts Sold by the dealer. Parts which are made by the same people who made the parts for Mercedes so, no loss of quality. You will need to shop around for these parts but it will save you a bomb. Just stay away from cheap Chinese knock offs, they are also around.

    Get the front wheels tracked correctly with the steering wheel straight and itll probably solve a lot of ESP / BAS faults. There's a yaw control sensor, its detecting steering wheel position not same as road wheels, so thinks there's a traction issue and closing down the safety system.
    Just had same on our 2003 W211, kept throwing up ESP Malfunction steering straight on motorway. Got it tracked by someone who knew what he was doing (not a tyre centre!) with the steering wheel straight. Drives properly now and no ESP fault.

      That is true, but when the w220 came out in 1998 it was really high tech and a pleasure to drive. Long term quality inside (soft colour on plastic, leather) and of the chassis is quite poor especially when you compare it with its predecessor the w140. Late 90s was the time to safe money in the car business, that problem goes through nearly all brands. Advantage is you can drive cheap s-classes today.

    • @Michael_Lorenson
      @Michael_Lorenson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, Mercedes bought and took control of Chrysler, not the other way around, which is widely agreed to have been a mistake. At the time, we were asked to believe it was a 'merger of equals'. Soon after, all the Chrysler people were escorted from the building, from which you can draw your own conclusions. To this day the rear-drive Chrysler -- sorry, 'Stellantis' -- cars (not the trucks, obviously) are based on an E-Class platform from the 1990s.

      @@Michael_Lorenson The rot set in with water based paint, where only the clear coat was water proof, door bottoms and wing edges must have been missed as that was where the rot always started. Then they started to use cheaper steel. Perhaps it was a generic German problem, to survive they all needed to up their volumes. BMW Porsche as well as Merc' have all manufactured some right rubbish.

    • @Michael_Lorenson
      @Michael_Lorenson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timbutton4990
      Water-based paint was a consequence of a US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ban on using some of the chemicals used in prior paint formulations. The early water-based paints were truly awful, but not specific to any one car company. Any company selling cars in the US was forced to use WBP because US repair facilities had to use it for any needed repainting due to crash damage or whatever. I suppose the manufacturers decided to use WBP worldwide because it didn't make sense to use different processes, given all the factors involved.
      But I agree that the need for the cost efficiencies of high volume production partly led to the decline of German car quality. For many years, I owned nothing but BMWs from the 1980s and 1990s. Those built after about 2000 don't interest me because of their seemingly endless problems.

    @marconotonfacebook3480 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Actually looks very nice inside - so the quality is not that bad. The 'fix' for the SRS is not a fix, right? It's just a bypass. Like pulling the fuse to get rid of warning lights....

    After doing a visual inspection on steering and suspension components, get a 4 wheel alignment check with Hunter alignment equipment. KWIK fit have them and some places will check for free. Hunter is by far the best alignment equipment out there and manufacturers use them in factories. After getting alignment done and all where it should be, there is another stage which Alignment centres bever do and that's recalibrating the steering angle sensor when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position. You need bidirectional scan tool to do it though. KWIK fit don't have these scan tools so you would need to find someone else to do it. Another thing to not do with these is change them to coilover suspension because you will loose the functionality that the air shocks have. Say you have a lot in the boot which drops the rear of the car. The air shocks will pump the car up to keep it level. The coilover replacement looses this function so the whole ride is changed and ruined. I've worked on several w220 and W221 who have done this it's upsetting to see what people do who sint realise how they have made the car worse.

    Is this a (relatively cheap) distraction to keep you from spending more money on the Lotus and the Ferrari? You have a one car garage...and as I count, four cars. If you hang onto the Mercedes, it may reveal a problem that will make it worth even less than you paid for it. If you need a tax write off, donate it to a charity...while someone will still take it. On the other hand, if you think it is reliable enough to become a "work in progress" replacement for the Alfa (and you enjoy driving it that much), then sell the Alfa and get some money back to feed the car projects bank account. The modern sedans (even that old) offer some very good driving but this doesn't seem exotic enough. Perhaps something French...or even British would be more fun. Whatever....enjoy.

    Starting with this episode of the Benz series on the channel. Streaming it on my TV on a lazy grey afternoon.
    Cheers from Belgium! And I know these cars can be an (electronics) nightmare. The end of the nineties were a major rust and quality check problematic and erratic era for Mercedes indeed.
    Again I admire your sense of humour!

    I'd find the warning lights annoying and would also want to touch up the rust spots but putting those issues right should not cost too much and if you get hold of a half decent OBD diagnostic tool, you might actually be able to identify things like wheel speed sensors and then buy and replace them cheaply and easily yourself.

    Was the smell of burning oil? Probably a weeping cam cover gasket leaking oil onto an exhaust manifold, very common on the 5.0 M113 V8. It was the case on my CLS 500 with the same engine. That engine is pretty much one of the most bulletproof V8s you can get though.

    In theory planned obsolesce makes a lot of sense for car manufacturers, they make no money on car resales and very little if the car requires few spare parts. It screws the environment but why let that get in the way of wheelbarrows full of cash

    Steering wheel needs removing and putting back on with sensor in right location, will solve your issues. Most likely removed for indicator stalk replacement 👍

    • @benbuchanan672

      Agree, but centre the wheel on the track rods, not by removing steering wheel (because removing/replacing the steering wheel won’t change the position of the sensor).

    I had the CL500. It shares the same hydraulic ABC suspension system. The same 5ltr V8 and the car was bloody awesome.....apart from the ABC suspension. When it was working it was one of the best handling saloon out there, but when the ABC fails, and it will, its bloody dangerous and costs so much to repair in parts alone. The car will drop and can even let pressure leak from the valves. The ABC is ridiculous and it's only a matter of time when they go wrong. You end up watching the dash board for the dreaded orange light and for when it changes for the red light. Trust me the ABC system is shit , that's why Mercedes changed the system from the hydraulic system.
    I did I write up on one if the Mercedes forums on how to rebuild the ABC system. Good luck👍

    Nothing wrong with W220 quality,except some interior plastics.The rust issues were common with many brands for a while, after changing to water based paint.People like simple ideas,but surely it wasn´t like "W140,let´s make a great car,no matter what it costs"or "W220,let´s make a cheap and bad car".S-class is a Mercedes flagship after all.My own experience with this model is very good,no moneypit.
