    I have a 1968 Super Reverb Silverface drip edge. Its the AB763 circuit. The numbers on all the transformers as well as chassis stamps (inked as well as "hard stamped") indicate '68. Also the presence of factory soldered grid stoppers (present on AB763) and other unmolested components indicate a '68 AB763. So, my point is that there are Silverface amps that are essentially blackface right from the factory.
    BTW, I ordered some Ruby 6L6Gc's for my 68 Super. They were supposed to be here Tuesday. If they don't, it'll be Goodbye Ruby Tubes Day. lol
    Love the Video and subscribed. Thanks

    I had a microphonic tube in V1 of my 65 Twin Reverb reissue. Watching this video I learned that all I had to do was take it out since I don't use channel 1 anyway. Thanks for the help!

    Nice Drip Edge Twin! I found a 68 Drip Edge Twin in a charity shop in Camden London. No speakers in it but otherwise in pretty good shape. Still had the original footswitch.

    With all respect's this video is a collection of wrong informations. Sorry but only reason not to touch tubes with bare hands is if they are still somewhat hot. Tubes are not halogen bulbs to break if you leave residue from your hands on it. Glass envelope is strong enough for normal use and handling. You want to use circular motion because it is easier to pull them out specially out of the bear trap tube holders. Tubes can take normal use when you use the common sense. Worst offense is about hum and biasing though. In some amps with quad power tubes there is a pot for adjusting balance between the tubes to better match them and it reduces hum in some situations when tubes are not matched that well. This has nothing to do with biasing. You need and want to bias fixed bias amp when ever you change the power tubes. With cathode bias amp you can change the tubes without need to change the bias, mostly. Even on the cathode bias amps, sometimes, you have to change the cathode resistor because vintage amps where designed to operate with old mains with lower voltage and to operate with old tubes that where handling way more abuse then before. Old amps like that have to low values of the cathode resistor and power tube/tubes might red plate with current mains voltage and newly build tubes. Biasing amp is crucial and necessary to avoid it to replace and burn it self out or to sound bad. Only sometimes someone gets lucky that tubes are similar and they do not need biasing in the fixed bias amps. Very very rare occasion. Red plating after tube change is not that often but when it happens it can cost you tubes, resistors or even one of the transformers. Mostly it just sounds worse then it should. I get the need to save money or have pleasure doing it your self but then learn how to do it properly. Bias adjustment is done adjusting the negative grid voltage while monitoring it and monitoring the plate voltage as well. More current tubes pull lower the plate voltage goes. This change is not that huge but voltage been high and current being low plate dissipation power is affected by that drop. You do not bias just the plate current you bias plate dissipation power and that's what you get when multiplying plate voltage with plate current. Remember cathode current you typically measure when biasing amp is total current and it is plate and screen current together. So typically plate current is 5-ish mA lower. Get that plate current in amps and multiply it with the plate voltage and you get the plate dissipation at that bias point. This number should be 70 to 80 percent of maximum plate power dissipation of that tube. Main thing is not to be to high or tube will burn out. Tube normally stabilizes at some current and it takes some time until it gets warm enough, but if negative grid voltage is not high enough current will keep on rising until something burns up. You find maximum plate power dissipation number in the data sheet of the given tube. When negative voltage is to low, for the tube used, plate current will not stabilize and tube is going to kill it self and possibly some amp parts. That is why you need to learn how to do this proper or why you want to bring it to the proper guitar tube amp tech or builder. V1 is designation of the tube on the first place in the signal chain. It contains first gain stage and it is most sensitive place in the amp. Changing it affects the tone the most. It is preamp tube but all of those smaller tubes are preamp tubes. In some amps with two channels they have practically V1 for each channel so That tube is kind of V1/2. On some of Fender amps it is enough to place non used channel volume at 0 and it will result in no "signal bleed" and better sound. In some other old Fender amps like Deluxe 5E3 adding some volume on non used channel makes it sound better. Anyways just put level of the channel 1 to 0, when you are not using it and there will be no need to take the tube out of the amp. When you do take it out you are risking losing that shield and risking the tube socket as well. It will get dirty and might even corrode. Pitty to ruin the socket while those old sockets are very good while maintained properly. I really hate to sound like hater but it is important to me that people who are watching trying to learn from it do not kill their nice vintage amps by following this advice how ever good willing it was it is very dangerous. Red plating amp could start the fire and will kill at least the tubes if not more parts in the amp.

    I'm not saying I know for sure on THAT particular amp, but Fender used up those AB763 tube charts on the later silverface amps. They were leftover from the blackface amps and they didn't want to print new ones since the tube types and tube locations were the same. The circuitry changed around 1968 or thereabouts.

      yup they changed quite a bit of things in or around 1968, still these amps are legendary for their sound and performance. red knob evil twin also was a great one. thanks for checking out my videos!

    I used to have to put a '76 version of this, up over my head and carry it through the crowd and drop it down so I could get it through the door, then back up and out the parking lot to my car. These days, my spinal discs have collapse and I cannot walk without pain. It's a wonderful world ...
    Mullard is making some real fine sounding tubes these days, out of Russia, I think.

    Bias is not to remove hum. It is to set the proper voltage so your tubes don't burn out too soon or sound cold and lifeless. The adjustments on some Fender amps is a hum balance .

      This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. First thing you do is bias. No sorry the first thing you do is verify the filter caps are not original and change them out.
      The him isn’t unbalanced tubes or even bias it’s leaky filter caps.

    Since the best power tubes (NOS RCA black plates) are almost impossible to find a matched quad, the best available 6L6 tubes available today are the vintage Svetlana winged C's. If they arent the winged C's, they are just Sovteks like these Ruby tubes.

  • @MarleyWigston
    @MarleyWigston 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What do you mean hopefully you don’t need to adjust bias? If you want the tubes to last, and other parts of the circuit to last and the tone of the amp to be optimal you bias the amp EVERYWHERE TIME you change tubes and for that matter every few months throughout the life of the power tubes.
    That him you hear means that likely those filter caps are original and they at the very least along with the bias cap should be replaced. They are leaky.

    Great demo and video mate.. I have a twin and i have chucked KT66's in mine, and put an EMINENCE Texas Heat and V30 running at 8ohms and a secondary Fender 212 cab also at 8ohms. Sometimes i half power it too and it takes drive pedals beautifully.👌👍

    @mandobanjoguitar TH-cam won't let me reply directly to your comment, you probably just need to replace V3 and/or V4 tubes, usually the reverb box inside the amp with springs in it never go bad, if the amp has never been re-capped it's also possible the electrolytic fluids have dried up.

    Hi, I have a service centre in Brazil which is Fender Marshall, Laney...Authorised; that hum is very likely caused by bad electrolytic capacitors (this is going to be very likely the case with the make of IC capacitors Fender use on later models).

    Hi Randy, just subscribed to your youtube channel, anyway, I had the good fortune to score myself a pretty cool mid 70's (I think that's what it is) Fender Super Twin amp from a guy who sold it to me for $300.00 Australian, it's in pretty good working condition and sounds great, it uses a total of six 6L6 power tube and puts out about 180 Watts R.M.S. or 395 Watts peak, it is housed in a wooden cabinet for a Blackface Fender Bassman.

    RANDY SCHARTIGER, the voltage goes up when V1 is pulled but I thought vacuum tubes had very high input impedance and the plate output impedance "shouldn't LOAD" down the other preamp tube when its shared in parallel. Like you said both preamp tubes plates are shared tied together. The DC plate voltage will raise higher when pulling removing V1 on the normal channel. This also changes the "impedance" to next following stage is use to seeing as a load? What i mean is that is changes the Tone of the preamp section now since you removed the unused preamp tube of the parallel channel. Is this true or not that it changes the tone and impedance?

      it'll work fine without the tube covers they are designed to keep skin oil off the tubes and make them perform better and warm up faster. as for the vibrato it most likely is not working because of bad tubes, the knobs hardly ever go bad tho there is always that possibility, tubes are more likely the problem. good luck and thanks for watching!

    Howdy Randy, is there a circuit mod to stop the bleed over without removing V1?

  • @johnballantyne3458
    @johnballantyne3458 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question: if I pull two of the 6L6's but leave both speakers hooked up, what risks do I run by having that impedence mis-match?

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't recommend it, it's easy to unhook one speaker when doing that. the impedance mis-match would put a heavy strain on the two tubes left in the amp, the louder you crank it the more strain, in fact the gain tube for which ever channel you're playing thru would also suffer. other than greatly shortening the life of your remaining tubes there are some other circuitry that eventually suffer from this if left unchecked.

    • @johnballantyne3458
      @johnballantyne3458 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the prompt reply. Out of curiosity, I tried it for just a brief moment and it really didn't seem to change the sound much, so I just put all four tubes back in and I'm leaving it be. Cheers. :)

    • @docholliday3150
      @docholliday3150 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it is supposed to change the "sound", it is supposed to change the volume of the sound.

    • @johnballantyne3458
      @johnballantyne3458 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's what I really meant to say. Although it actually did slightly change the sound - a bit less low end. I didn't really notice a major volume difference.

    Helloa I know this is an old video
    Just a quick comment if you are going to spend money on new tubes they should always be biased correctly (EVERY SET WHETHER SET OF 2 OR 4 ARE DIFFERENT)
    You potentially can cause damage to other components as well as your 200 dollar set if tubes if biased to hot the tu e life is significantly reduced if biased too low your headroom is reduced and you tend to get undesirable distortion in the signal (not the kind of distortion compression we like to hear)
    Anyway I am sure you know your amp

    have you ever heard of the red knob 'evil' twin made in the 90s? it was my first real amp with a decent 2nd channel gain stage that I could play metal on. it was hilarious and I still have it after I had it get fixed up because I beat the crap out of it. still sounds great! was thinking about changing the 12at7 or au7 to all ax7 in V2 but not sure that is the right one to get a little more gain out of the 2nd channel but I don't want to screw it up lol!

I'm excited to see how it sounds with fresh tubes. It sounds great now, it'll probably sound great with fresh tubes.

    Hello Randy, I did something pretty stupid today and I think I killed my Twin reverb reissue... I plugged the footswitch into the external speaker jack and practiced with it like that until it died. There was a lot of heat, but the amp was on the other side of the room so I dIdn't notice until it was too late.
    I notice that it was not nearly as loud as usual but thought something else in the chain was causing the volume drop. It is dead now and wont turn on. Have I really killed my amp?
    Thanks for any help you can provide!

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ouch! wow! that would really suck! you might have got lucky and only blown a fuse? plugging the foot switch into the output jack would almost be like a dead ground depending on the impedance of the foot switch. I would check the fuse and pray that;s all that happened, if not, it probably cooked your quads and possibly the transformer. good luck!

      Any Info on your amp that blow up . My buddy did the same too his amp but he played it for a bit before noticing the switch wasnt working and shut his amp off . And after he corrected the connections and put power to it again .but it didnt came back on

    • @cacornett58
      @cacornett58 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The footswitch doesn't have an impedence like the one guy said. It is basically a make or break switch that shorts the tip or the ring to ground or both. It is a very bad thing to plug in the external speaker jack as you will be shorting out the output transformer possibly burning it up. That's not good. Your Amp is dead and maybe your speakers.

    • @davidlynch4338
      @davidlynch4338 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sorry ,but what a hack , he don't know what his talking about. 1. chaining output tubes without checking bias is big no no, Shure it can work if you are lucky but noting to recommend. 2. pulling out V1 have noting to do with "bleed over" there is no bleed over in a twin! But what is going on is : V1 and V2 share a cathode resistor and when you pull V1 , V2 will see a lower value (820 ohm instead of 1640 ohm in standard ) this will give V2 a little more gain, and that is what u will hear if u pull V1.
