    I finally figured out that back then they registered the pitch speed 10 feet before reaching the plate.It is possible that the pitch wasn’t actually this fast.

      According to people that know better than me the a pitch is clocked slower when it's 10 feet in front of home plate. The pitch was clocked at 100.1 but by today's measuring it would cross home plate at 108.5.

    • @fredglave8864
      @fredglave8864 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The pitch will lose speed as it approaches the plate. Today pitches are clocked 50 feet before home plate. In Ryan's day the ball was clocked as it crossed the plate. IF a ball was clocked at 108 mph when it already traveled 83% of its way to the plate, then it would make me believe that it couldn't be less than 107 mph as it crossed the plate.

    I know records are made to be broken, but because of baseball analytics, where pitchers aren't throwing as many innings as they used to, I'd say Nolan Ryan's strikeout records are pretty secure.

    I recall an All Star Game, and l believe it was Dave Parker up to bat. Ryan was whizzing those balls right past him, and on the called 3rd strike Parker asked the Umpire: “Didn’t that sound low to you?” 😄

      1. Time frame - Early 1990’s
      2. Location - Arlington Stadium
      3. Situation - Nolan Ryan warming up before the game down right field baseline
      4. Our seats - about 12 rows up from the field level at the visitor on deck circle
      5. The sound of Nolan Ryan’s fastball hitting the catcher’s mitt - 30.06 rifle shot
      6. Conclusion - never heard anything like it before that day or since - unmistakable Nolan Ryan rifle shot - sounded like the trigger was pulled no more than 40-50 feet away. Legend!!!

    My pop told me a story about Koufax which could probably apply to Ryan.
    Koufax threw a fastball to a batter and the ump called it a strike. The batter turned to the ump and said, "You gotta be kidding me, that was high!
    The ump replied, "You didn't even see it."
    The batter replied,

    I still kick myself for giving away his rookie card along with all of my other baseball cards when we moved in 1973. Of course, we had no idea then how he'd turn out. I did keep my '68 Tom Seaver card, which I still have.

      I collected hardcore from 1977-1995, but I did have some nice older rookies and Nolan Ryan was one of those, as well as Seaver, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, etc.
      I started out as football only because the candy store down the street on the corner didn’t have anything else for 2 years after I started. I didn’t know there were any others. I got lucky when TG&Y had 55gallon drums full of unopened wax packs. I spent close to $500 on wax packs were on sale for $0.10 each and they were years ‘84 to ‘88 I think. Among those ‘86-‘87 Fleer basketball. A LOT of them, well over half of nearly 3 55 gallon drums of wax packs. Superstar rookie cards (not necessarily their rookie year) for days. The cool thing about opening these packs is that you already knew who the superstars were and which ones would be worth more. Not counting all the outstanding cards in that set. I pulled just 3 players out and put them aside: Bird, Johnson and some dude named Jordan. 24 Jordan rookies pulled from packs bought for 10 cents a piece (i later paid $279/pack in 1993 or 94 and got two more Jordan rookies.)
      Anyway, I got out of the hobby completely in 1996. It made me sick seeing insert card values many times more valuable than rookie cards in the set. They ruined the hobby for me. I sold all my cards for next to nothing considering the value today. Sadly, l sold them before grading became all the rage when a Micheal Jordan rookie went for a measly $700.
      That $500 I spent back during high school was by far and large the best investment I’ve ever made, but had I waited another few years, I wouldn’t have had to retire …because I would’ve never had to work, lol.

  • @somegamer7958
    @somegamer7958 ปีที่แล้ว

    Let's be clear. This isn't anywhere near 108mph and if you think it is then you're gullible as hell. I'll explain why you THINK it's 108, though, then you can feel really stupid.
    You think the ball is going faster than it really is because it moves across the screen much farther than most pitches do. The angle you have here puts the pitcher far to the left of the screen and the catcher towards the right. So when the ball moves on your screen, it travels far to the right. If the catcher was directly above the pitcher (which is closer to modern angles) then the ball wouldn't appear to be nearly as fast, because it doesn't travel as far across your screen.
    The pitch being very far outside is another reason why the illusion works. It travels even farther than normal across your screen. If this had been an inside pitch at the exact same speed, no one would think anything of it. It would travel about 30% less on your screen than the outside pitch did.
    If Nolan Ryan had been a lefty, it would look even faster.
    108mph never happened. Yes, the myth is fun, but if 108 happened then someone else would have gotten close by now.

    • @ryanforsythe
