CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sara (Julia Stiles) auditions for Juilliard Dance School.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this romantic drama, two teenagers in love struggle to look past their differences. After the unexpected death of her mother, Sarah Johnson (Julia Stiles) moves to Chicago to live with her father. Knowing no one at her new school and not at home in a gritty, inner-city high school, Sarah has trouble adjusting, but she soon becomes friends with Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), who has talent and street smarts but a checkered past. Sarah was an avid student of ballet before her mother's death sidelined her studies, while Derek has some serious hip-hop moves, and their mutual love of dance leads their friendship into something deeper. However, since Sarah is white and Derek is black, they have more to contend with than the average high school couple; Sarah gets static from Nikki (Bianca Lawson), Derek's former girlfriend, while Derek has to deal with his friend Malakai (Fredro Starr), who is still deep in the thug life Derek is trying to avoid. Save the Last Dance was directed by Thomas Carter, who previously examined the sociopolitical side of dancing in Swing Kids.

I think we all thought this was great when we were little because this is the kind of performance we put on for our family in the living room
This is the best comment, 100% accurate
Right!! When I was little, I used to think she was killing it!! Now as an adult........ 😬😬
Yes indeed 😂😂😂
That's an accurate comparison lmao
This is the comment that came from my soul 😂
Nobody:
Her: 👉🏼👇🏼👆🏼👈🏼☝🏼
😂❤️
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yooooo lmfao! 🤣🤣🤣
💀😂
That little side hop at 0:46 gets me every. TIME 😂😆
The hop😂
😂 I’m dead
🤣
LMAO
It’s the hop for me as well. That’s really the high (or low) point! 😂😂😂😂
Came to the comments just to verify that we all thought this was fire when we were little, and now recognize that it’s the equivalent of only using salt and pepper for seasoning
Salt and pepper is all you need if you’re a REAL Chef🤣
@@joancarlson5218 thats only if you get prime cut meat. If you're making sauces, soup, chicken etc.. just salt and pepper ain't gunna cut it

Nope I still love the movie as much as I did when I first seen it
OMFG this made me literally laugh out loud hahahaha. SOO true.
The dude nodding at the side kills me
100th like!!!🤗
That's some awesome acting pretending like he thinks she's killing it
All of the judges nodding is what cracks me up
That was literally me when I first watched it in 2001 😆
Was she that bad??
Still haunted by why we all thought she skilled this scene
WHO LET THIS WOMAN DO THIS
The ballet part she did lmao the hiphop part not so much
@@unapologeticyoutuber That's what's sad - those ballet parts look like they were mainly done by a dance double and not her
worst part... still love it :/
Tbf, it’s easier for a professional actor to fake dancing skills in a movie than it is for a professional dancer to fake acting skills in a movie.
I don't know why when i was little, i thought she killed this scene 😂
I think we all did lol
Sadly it looked stupid to me then, but I was older (an adult). I was expecting more of a flow between the hip hop and the ballet similar to hiplet but this definitely wasn’t it. This looks choppy and you can also see her counting, but then Julia isn’t a dancer so that’s not her fault.
She killed the heel toe that’s about it lol
I love the dance and song, and together I thought it was cool. I thought she did the dance really well, in my opinion.
She still! Isn't?
This was the iconic dance that inspired Raygun's performance....this and the this is hip hop by Dania's how to look hiphop.
Remember everybody- it's all about posture.
"I can't say this on the record yet, Ms. Johnson, but that well-timed finger-pointing just earned you a ticket to Juliard"
A question what is that music called please

You know the characters name? Yea…your a Stan…don’t lie. You watched this movie thinking this dancing is inspirational. 😂😂
@@KrisKk08 They literally quoted one of the most iconic lines from the movie... Like you don't even have to watch it to know this particular line LMAO
0:46 who told her to do that😂😂😂😄🤣
I thought I was the only one who hated that part 😂 I thought it was so irritating
Right lol Hip Hop doesn’t mean you actually hop 😂🐰
I mean that was bad enough but then she legit high fived herself😂😂
Lmao y'all that's like my favorite part 😂😂
😂
Who's here because they just did a bit on SNL with Julia coming out for a cameo and recreating the chair finale?
Me!!
Came here after watching "the" SNL bit too. I best remember her for her role in the The Bourne movie series. The one who smiles at the TV news report about police still searching for Jason Bourne's body in the river. And credits. 💳!!
Good sense of humor ❤😂🎉
😂😂😂
I didn't see your comment and I had just done this. I guess I watched it later though
It’s the dead eyes that really sealed the audition for me 😂
Juilliard loves the dead eyes.
Its called concentration :)
Came here to say this 😱
Nooooo 😂😅😂
This was back when they didn't get dancers to act in dancing movies. That's why this movie was so good..because there was actual acting in it. And for a non-dancer, she's actually pretty good (at her hip-hop parts..she didn't do the ballet ones, there is a huge discrepancy between the two parts in terms of level of skill). This was a great movie and Julia is pretty much awesome :)
I think she's very talented but extremely stuck up and unapproachable
true
LMFAO really?
True even jessica alba was in honey and she’s wasn’t a dancer to begin with
She actually had a dance double for the film - Broadway actress Chryssie Whitehead.
I still give her mad credit for learning that dance routine. Is it the best? Most definitely not, but when I watched this as a child, I wanted to be her, because that dance gave me goosebumps.
Her or the double?😮
Onde consigo assistir esse filme novamente?? Boa noite
I thought it was a very original choreography very enjoyable to watch always someone who has to put a downer on things
At 73, I love this!
I’d say she did very well for the routine especially if she wasn’t a taught dancer too much criticism these days especially for actors of that time who did well for themselves in this decade
As a trained dancer this makes me ✨uncomfy✨
🤣🤣🤣
As a silver level ball room dancer this makes me cringe.
Was it the bunny hop? THE BUNNY HOP? 🤣🤣🤣

I wonder who choreographed this routine
It was best at that year. Time has passed and everything has changed.
@@aurinkobay7118 you will never know, they are hiding under a rock somewhere 😂. It's a shame because I love Julia Stiles and think she's amazing. I believe she could've done much better with better choreography.
0:46 I choked at that little hop
gave me chills the first time i watched it two different dance styles combined to form something perfect like her and Derek's relationship
yeah but her technique was non-existent, if she had more training it would have been phenomenal....also looks like she's got flat feet.
brooklyngurl09 this scene never goes outta style. I STILL get chills this my favorite movie 😍
She’s a horrible dancer
Now sis....

Considering she is an actress learning dance moves for a movie, I think she did fine. Better than most folk criticizing could do. Try the moves she did in 30 days and then post again. That scene is still legendary which is why it is still being discussed today.

Fun Fact : Julia Stiles said that she couldn't finish rewatching Save The Last Dance because of a scene that she felt it was cringe worthy to watch. I could assume it's obviously this scene 😂😂
I remember watching this as a teen and being like OMG she killed it!!!🤣🤣 Now as an adult I’m like um.... ok. But why do I still love this movie and scene so much? 🤷🏼♀️🤣
And we all thought this routine was fire when we were younger 🤣🔥
I didn’t!!! 😂
Speak for yourself. I thought the dance was juvenile even when I was a juvenile!!
Why so much hate in these comments? I thought and still think this is great!
I love Julia. She made the movie so emotional to watch.
It’s the Heel Toe that will always be iconic for me 😁 I remember all the girls doing it at school 😂 good memories ❤

The music really pushed this scene. I was invested 😌
What's the name of the music ?????
This is about to get a million more views. Chloe Fineman didn't even exaggerate. Poor Derek tho, dude had to pretend this was good.
To be fair he was probably filmed just to make faces, without Julia performing. And thinking abt it now, that mightve been worse 😅😅😅
I have now watched this 21 times.

Fatima Robinson. She choreographed Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody”, which is still lit, but this is definitely not her best work.

Not sure if folks realize what it takes to perfect this dance technique....this is a combination of ballet, jazz, modern, and pointe! This is hard to master, but she did a great job for a non-dancer!!!
There is no pointe in this though
It isn't that she (or rather her dance double) isn't skilled. It's that the combination here comes off as really corny.

The song is still fire 🔥 though! Live your Dreeaaammms 😂😂😂
The routine and choreography were nice, but she didn't sell it to me. If she had changed her facial expressions every so often instead of looking like a mannequin, she would have elevated this performance even further!
i think what they were selling was the technique of the combination of hip hop and ballet, and it was more like an attitude look than mannequin look to me. If she had overdone the attitude, it would have looked exaggerated, if she smiled like a regular ballerina dancer, then it would have looked awkward. but that's just my opinion lol
I agree...
My nephew took ballet for years and his teacher was mad when they smiled. Blank seems to be one of the preferred faces for ballerini.
She was still gr8
She totally sold me. She was such a queen up there

This is seriously one of my childhood movies
official kat Mid-teens for me.
This literally popped up on my feed because of SNL! Now I can’t keep a straight face. 😂😂😂😂
I always thought she had a dance double and they mostly used her for the close up shots.
All things considering for a an actress that worked her butt off to learn it and do her best i will give her respect for it to say the least.
We thought she ATEEEE when we were younger 🤣🤣 I’m crying laughing watching this back!
Just coming here from Chloe Fineman on SNL, lol, it’s so spot on!
Maybe didn't last the test of time LOL. SNL did a spot on imitation.
The song is called “ All or Nothing “ by Athena Cage
To bad they wasted a decent song on such a bad dance routine
Athena Cage as in Kut Klose Athena…. Never knew that
I LOVE this dance scene. Love the song. This version sadly, not available on I-tunes. Only criticism is that her facial expressions do not change. Dancers need to express through their facial expressions as well, not just their moves.
Horrible song. Everything about it is shallow and cheap (those cringe lyrics!). It's nothing more than a calculated product to be consumed for money by the target group of -18yo girls. Yuck.
Yeah that was my only problem, but she did great
Is it not a hip hop style to be emotionaless
Anyone here from SNL Weekend Update? Lol

thank you SNL - this is as funny as your parody
Only here because Chloe Fineman just stanned this on SNL tongiht, lol. Not sure what is funnier, Chloe or this actual clip
heel toe. anyone still breaking that out lol??? anyways a lot of people accused her of using a stunt double in this scene. she was actually upset about this scenne because there are no face close ups during the difficult parts
this movie came out in 2001 before the heel toe was all over. idk why they care if she used a stunt. she didnt tho. she trained for almost two months prior to the movie to do this scene as well as other. i never heard or saw her say she was upset tho. whered you read that? if she did say it youd think she knew even with close ups it could be her face and anothers body like in black swan.
Excuse me but she did use a stunt double! Look at the credits! People are so fucking guillable..
All of the shots which do not show her face are a stunt double. Come on it is obvious she is not doing the hardest parts of this.
***** lmao this hip hop isnt even hard. Ballet is harder.
***** she did do some if the ballet herself but she had a stunt too. I agree she did the hip hop too. That scene where she stuck her feet in the tub they said that was her feet at the time of the scene so they used it.
