पचास के दशक में बनी फ़िल्म 'मुग़ल-ए-आज़म' को बनाने के लिए जिस पागलपन, कल्पनाशीलता और जीवट की ज़रूरत थी, वो के. आसिफ़ में कूट-कूट कर भरी हुई थी. हमेशा चुटकी से सिगरेट या सिगार की राख झाड़ने वाले करीमउद्दीन आसिफ़, अभिनेता नज़ीर के भतीजे थे. शुरू में नज़ीर ने उन्हें फ़िल्मों से जोड़ने की कोशिश की लेकिन आसिफ़ का वहाँ दिल न लगा. नज़ीर ने उनके लिए दर्ज़ी की एक दुकान खुलवा दी. नज़ीर ने तब उन्हें ज़बरदस्ती ठेल कर फ़िल्म निर्माण की तरफ़ दोबारा भेजा. थोड़े दिनों में ही वो दुकान बंद करवानी पड़ी, क्योंकि ये देखा गया कि आसिफ़ का अधिकतर समय पड़ोस के एक दर्ज़ी की लड़की से रोमांस करने में बीत रहा था.

Mughal e Azam is a film that none of the film industries of the world could ever make. I like history films . Hollywood's cleopatra or any film made during those times could never compete with this masterpiece. Because attention to detail was everywhere, whether it be sets, acting, direction or music, dialogues and costumes. It is perfection of art.
