Those are one-inch pine boards (actually, about 3/4 in given today's lumber standards). I noticed the back one was cracked. Still an enormous number of boards to break.
I don't know of any place where you can buy a board holder. There's usually someone at a school with sufficient carpentry skills to build one. The one we use has a sliding top and bottom bracket to hold up the boards, whereas in this one, the boards are held in place by very tight straps.

I think that's a custom set up. The boards look to be about 1.25 inch.
