The Social Network soundtrack broke the mold of what soundtracks should be like. That is why its going to stay as an important milestone in cinema. It's absolutely brilliant in every way.

  • @cbpointblank

He's done everything. "Pretty Hate Machine" was synthpop, "Broken" was blistering metal, "Downward Spiral" is (arguably) one of the defining records of the Industrial genre, and "Fragile" is a hugely ambitious concept album that really has to be listened to as a whole - and now he's winning Oscars for film scores that are completely unlike any of that. The man is a genius and a legend.

I don't think David is being miserable, more like his mind is just blown. [on winning an Academy Award] You think, "I'm probably not going to win, but if I do win, I'd better not sound like an idiot." The anxiety builds. Then you realize you haven't eaten in 12 hours. And the camera's on you, maybe, at all times. "I need to pick my nose, but I can't risk it." Then you hear your name in slow motion. "OK, hug my wife. Don't trip over the cord. Why am I taking steps two at a time? I'm going to slip, but I can't stop. Oh my God there's Nicole Kidman, she's nine feet tall. Is the mic on?" It's over in a millisecond and you're backstage with an Oscar in your hand." - Yup Reznor perfectly describe anxiety. Only ones with anxiety fully understand this. Million questions, million possible solutions, answers million things you must answer to yourself in only couple of seconds. Anxious overthinking.

Reznor and Ross just nailed it that year. Their score for Social Network showed a different approach to film music and their music played a huge part in how the movie came off. Zimmer and Powell were kinda replacable if you think about it - their music was great stuff, but it wasn't music that, in terms of atmosphere, other composers wouldn't be able to deliver.

I watched Social Network first, but after watching HTTYD, I did not remember much of Social Network. That is not to put down the Social Network’s score though, but HTTYD’s music resonated more with me and the leitmotifs in the first movie carried on to the 2nd and 3rd which is one of the best examples of musical storytelling I have seen.

Thanks God they won! They constructed a detailed and beautiful score than worked out with the movie in such an amazing way. Everything made for this movie was so greatly worked on and applied. The score is the best by a mile!

I do think it was good that the academy recognized their work. So often, music that is not mainstream pop is not recognized. I thought that was a big step forward for the academy. I was so happy to see them when they sent to have their awesome work recognized. Atticus was right when he said that Trent Reznor is a genius. Peter Murphy of Bauhaus is one of his greatest idols. In fact, they've done some work together. If you have never heard Peter Murphy's solo stuff, you don't know what you're missing. You can definitely hear the influence. Anyway, I agree, it was great that the academy recognized their work.

Inception's score was brilliant but pushed no boundaries. Let's face it, we've heard dozens of soundtracks along the same lines as that of Inception.
The Social Network was more original and, rather than just focussing on the power of the music, put extensive effort into intergrating itself with each and every scene of the movie. Every note felt like it was in the exact right place. I feel it deserves it.

It's fine if that's your opinion, everyone has different taste, but I think a winning score doesn't have to be a compilation of the best songs. A score should support a film, not overshadow it, what made this score great is the fact that it just enforces the overall vibe of the movie, plus it's a very different kind of score, and it's good that the academy chose one that changed things up a bit, rather than stick to a safe one, that's the only way the art will ever evolve and stay interesting

This score itself is a masterpiece, no disrespect to Zimmer, but the score of The social network is much more groundbreaking and chilling

Trent and Atticus are well deserved winners. Hans was a very close second. But people forget that scores don't only have to be epic. Minimalism can perfect a movie just as much. Anybody who says I'm wrong, I have three words for you: The Jaws Theme.
Zimmer's was great. If it won, I'd be happy as well. But the soundtrack for Social Network was as lonely and calculated as Zuckerberg was. Inception was just massive. SN's score was sad, happy, exciting, frightening, and everything. Congrats guys.

With a complex, incisive screenplay by Aaron Sorkin and a brilliant cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, the Social Network bears witness to the birth of an idea that rewove the fabric of society even as it unraveled the friendship of its creators.
