The Social Network soundtrack broke the mold of what soundtracks should be like. That is why its going to stay as an important milestone in cinema. It's absolutely brilliant in every way.
He's done everything. "Pretty Hate Machine" was synthpop, "Broken" was blistering metal, "Downward Spiral" is (arguably) one of the defining records of the Industrial genre, and "Fragile" is a hugely ambitious concept album that really has to be listened to as a whole - and now he's winning Oscars for film scores that are completely unlike any of that. The man is a genius and a legend.
@@huey1153 As much as I love Hans Zimmer's Inception OST I should tell you that 'Time' wasn't entirely "original" for the film. He first used "it" in The Thin Red Line (Journey to the Line) so yes, Trent and Atticus should have won.

I don't think David is being miserable, more like his mind is just blown. In one of Trent Reznor's interviews for this score, he said that David told him not to even worry or think about Oscar season. Then Trent and Atticus did the unthinkable and won an Oscar. David looks stunned when the camera cuts to him in the audience
An unconventional Best Score winner, but the most deserving. Reznor and Ross do a fantastic job with their aesthetic-building synths, and the phenomenal atmosphere their score creates. We rarely see scores like this win, but they absolutely deserved it!
They did not deserve it. I've listened to the soundtrack twice in the past 3 days and already forgot it. HTTYD has stuck with me and most others for years. HTTYD deserved the win

I came to see this one because a while ago I saw The Social Network for the first time ever and my God it felt so awesome to even read the name Trent Reznor in the opening credits. Great film and well deserved award

Its weird that the Oscars actually recognized a good score and it actually won, thats pretty amazing to me considering its not exactly a very conventional traditional "john williams" type score. Now all they need to do is start recognizing nick cave and warren ellis and ESPECIALLY Jonny Greenwood who did the best two scores of the last 5 years for there will be blood and the master and got NOTHING.
It's called score, not just some random background music. TSN's score added an extra layer to the atmosphere of the film and it helped audiences grasp the emotion flows of the characters. Quite frankly, TSN's score was unbeatable.
I was always in admiration that trent made a different career as he got older into an oscar winning scorer instead of one of those aging rock stars who still dresd like it's the 90s like marilyn Manson. He dresses like a grown up

I think the score for HTTYD should have won. It's such a powerful piece of music on its own. Then, when paired with the film, takes you into this wonderful world.
This never gets old. :) I think Trent has found his post-NIN niche in composing for films. I can't wait to see what he keeps coming up with in the next few years

Come on, it was a fantastic year that year for musical scores. I can't remember the last time I thought all the scores nominated were this amazing. It is a terribly close call. What won it for me is the originality of it and how well it modifies the mood of this film in its own unique way. Well done and well deserved!
IMO this score remains one of the best, most innovative, most beautiful, most artistically visionary, and most GENIUS of all time. The movie deserved to win Best Picture + Best Director IMO, but Trent and Atticus without a doubt took home an award they deserved. Game changers, always. Love them

It definitely made Social Network what it was, added exactly the right feel to it. I may be biased being a HUGE NIN fan, but I can't wait to see what else he's going to compose for. He doesn't care about anything other than giving his listeners an experience through his music, truly an artist. Anyone who's been to a concert knows.

Soundtrack played the most influential part responsible for making The Social Network what it is....for example,In the Hall of the Mountain King playing during the rowing scene...amazing...David Fincher deserved an Oscar too...
Reznor and Ross just nailed it that year. Their score for Social Network showed a different approach to film music and their music played a huge part in how the movie came off. Zimmer and Powell were kinda replacable if you think about it - their music was great stuff, but it wasn't music that, in terms of atmosphere, other composers wouldn't be able to deliver.
@PiCheZvara I have to respectfully disagree. For HTTYD, the atmosphere in Forbidden Friendship, Test Drive, and Romantic Flight shone more to me than Social Network. I watched Social Network first, but after watching HTTYD, I did not remember much of Social Network. That is not to put down the Social Network’s score though, but HTTYD’s music resonated more with me and the leitmotifs in the first movie carried on to the 2nd and 3rd which is one of the best examples of musical storytelling I have seen.

i think a lot of people underrate subtle, unassuming film scores compared to big brash compositions. I personally prefer scores like that in the social network, in fact i'm quite a fan of Reznor's recent repertoire.

I do think it was good that the academy recognized their work. So often, music that is not mainstream pop is not recognized. I thought that was a big step forward for the academy. I was so happy to see them when they sent to have their awesome work recognized. Atticus was right when he said that Trent Reznor is a genius. Peter Murphy of Bauhaus is one of his greatest idols. In fact, they've done some work together. If you have never heard Peter Murphy's solo stuff, you don't know what you're missing. You can definitely hear the influence. Anyway, I agree, it was great that the academy recognized their work.
Inception's score was brilliant but pushed no boundaries. Let's face it, we've heard dozens of soundtracks along the same lines as that of Inception. The Social Network was more original and, rather than just focussing on the power of the music, put extensive effort into intergrating itself with each and every scene of the movie. Every note felt like it was in the exact right place. I feel it deserves it.
It's fine if that's your opinion, everyone has different taste, but I think a winning score doesn't have to be a compilation of the best songs. A score should support a film, not overshadow it, what made this score great is the fact that it just enforces the overall vibe of the movie, plus it's a very different kind of score, and it's good that the academy chose one that changed things up a bit, rather than stick to a safe one, that's the only way the art will ever evolve and stay interesting
People will say Hans Zimmer should've won for Inception, but i disagree This score itself is a masterpiece, no disrespect to Zimmer, but the score of The social network is much more groundbreaking and chilling
Trent and Atticus are well deserved winners. Hans was a very close second. But people forget that scores don't only have to be epic. Minimalism can perfect a movie just as much. Anybody who says I'm wrong, I have three words for you: The Jaws Theme. Zimmer's was great. If it won, I'd be happy as well. But the soundtrack for Social Network was as lonely and calculated as Zuckerberg was. Inception was just massive. SN's score was sad, happy, exciting, frightening, and everything. Congrats guys.

As much as I love Nine Inch Nails, I really think Hans Zimmer should have won. The music he composed for "Inception" is truly incredible.

It's fine if that's your opinion, everyone has different taste, but I think a winning score doesn't have to be a compilation of the best songs. A score should support a film, not overshadow it, what made this score great is the fact that it just enforces the overall vibe of the movie, plus it's a very different kind of score, and it's good that the academy chose one that changed things up a bit, rather than stick to a safe one, that's the only way the art will ever evolve and stay interesting

This score itself is a masterpiece, no disrespect to Zimmer, but the score of The social network is much more groundbreaking and chilling

Trent and Atticus are well deserved winners. Hans was a very close second. But people forget that scores don't only have to be epic. Minimalism can perfect a movie just as much. Anybody who says I'm wrong, I have three words for you: The Jaws Theme.
Zimmer's was great. If it won, I'd be happy as well. But the soundtrack for Social Network was as lonely and calculated as Zuckerberg was. Inception was just massive. SN's score was sad, happy, exciting, frightening, and everything. Congrats guys.
Seeing Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman right by Trent Reznor is definitely a eyebrow raiser.
