I must say that this is one of few painting lessons that has profoundly helped me in my art (and I have only just this moment viewed it) - for it is one that not only obviously portrays every beautiful step, but most importantly reveals so smoothly every important technique and gesture. Thank you Mr. Lustenhouwer - your skills are breathtakingly inspirational.

The underpainting is in acrylic. I rub with oil medium and immediately I start to paint in oil.
I am preparing a long tutorial with all kinds of everything that might be of interest. Soon available in App Store.

Hi Liz. I blend the brushstrokes together after painting the whole face, and at the same day. Paint has to be fresh to blend. But be careful, too much blending makes your portrait dull!

HI Zeynab. It is a difficult question to answer. A bright personality deserves a bright color harmony. But a portrait only in black and white can show the lively spirit of the sitter. I think there is no general rule. It shows more the painter´s mood when he uses bright or dark colours.

    Hallo Jos.
    Succes. Ben

Wonderful work, Mr. Lustenhouwer. I can only benefit in a great way from watching a portraitist such as yourself at work; and I certainly have. I feel I can learn from many artist's work, but you're one of my favorites:) But it wouldn't it be great if an artist could produce work that fast and still have the quality! Just kidding, of course. Hope you have many more years of success and joy:)

I respect you as an wonderful artist as well as a nice person (I saw how you responded to someone's question you did not understand). I am an artist myself and viewed a painters portrait instructional (youtube) and he was SO RUDE to people, he told someone that wanted to ask his opinion on creating a portrait for the first time, to take a photo instead and frame it because he couldn't possibly be experienced enough ...

When you say "Rub in medium" are you talking about the acrylic or are you using something between the acrylic and the oil paint? I think the acrylic underpainting is clever, I never thought of that before. I've been doing it in oil, but I like what you did. Could you do a straight skin tone palette video? Your hand is more delicate than mine, I'd wonder if you could teach me (us) your method? Thanks for the video! :-)
