      +Darrell Brackett I've dove Cozumel a handful of times. If you think Cozumel is the best in the world, go to Komodo in Indonesia. Makes Cozumel look like a swamp!

    Very Beautiful Mike! I dove on Palancar and Santa Rosa back in the early 90's. The reefs were just as beautiful, but there were hardly any fish. Was told that the locals ate up everything they catch. Watching this footage though... I HAVE TO GO BACK!!!

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jojo Diver Most definitely Jojo Diver, they are doing a good job and the reefs are recovering nicely. They can always do more though and hoping one day they turn the entire Island into a protected park with no fishing :) The economic benefits to the Island as a park and scuba diver destination far outweigh the loss of one small portion of industry.

    We've just filmed a long natural sight and sound gopro walk through the town and beach but we didn't get to see Cozumel underwater, so we enjoyed watching your underwater footage very much. Thank you for sharing it. We've subscribed and look forward to seeing more.

    Great video! I was amazed at how beautiful and clear Cozumel was when we visited earlier this month. Your turtle footage is amazing. So pretty!

    What a difference, just dove Cozumel last week, didn´t have so much visibility. Yet Puerto Venados south of XCaret did have similar fauna as the one shown in your video. Great dive!

    Just returned from there. Did Santa Rosa as well. Shot with black 3+ 2.7 30fps. I did shoot in protune and now need to colour grade. Next time I'll shoot regular so I won't need to colour grade. Great job with this video. Gives me some inspiration for what I need to do. I saw some Grouper too, but not big ones and we missed the Eagle Ray. Did two, two tank dives and still never saw them. Dang.

    Hey Mike, thanks for sharing and what a great quality video. I have a Gopro 4 Silver, and was wondering if you have tried filming with Protune on? I have done both on and off with mixed results. Also, my research has resulted in different answers also. Some say that capturing video with Protune on actually gathers more data and is the way to go. My experience is that you have to be careful if you use an auto setting for exposure, which can change your video when you do not want it. Would be great if you could share your thoughts.

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Daigler Protune is great and is a must if you want to grade the image later. That said it is not the best image right out of the box and looks flat without doing any post processing. I usually do not shoot in Protune because I do not want to spend time trying to color grade my footage but i do use it especially if i am on a special dive with sharks or something where i will take the time to try and get a better image than what i would on auto.
      The image out of the box is flat in Protune but there is more image data to work with(less compression), so technically you would get a better image after grading the image but that takes time. For most of my videos. I shoot in auto, do a quick edit of the clips and share it to TH-cam.
      That said if I was doing anything other than snorkeling and I didn't have a filter or lights I would definitely shoot with Protune so I could bring the colors back into the image after. I don't have a lot of color grading experience but here is a example that I learned a bit from th-cam.com/video/UGthOhEMSYs/w-d-xo.html

    Can you post a photo of your setup? I am interested in how you use the Extension Pole with the Tray/lights...or do you use them in different combinations? I don't dive often but have started using a GoPro and posting videos after and would love to improve the quality...Thanks.

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kelly Saluri I do use them with different combos. I normally did not use lights with the GoPole but then started taking a arm off my try set up and using that one handed while using the GoPole. Most of the shots here would have been using just the tray set up with light from Snake River Prototyping (Lights from Backscatter Sola 2000's Light & Motion)

    By far one of the best videos i've seen with a gopro 4! Well done! Did you have the Red filter on for all the dives above? The video quality was spectacular. Was there any post filming editing using any apps or programs? And you did not even require a macro filter for those up close videos? Really good stuff here man

    nice and varied video! From just one dive, this is a great experience! Great job.
    Did you mount the lamps or do you use one of them separately by hand?
    Please do not misunderstand me, but in part the object is only partially illuminated ... I myself have only started using a lamp during my last vacation. Of course this is much more demanding than "just" the red filter and it means a lot more work. Was for me a big change ..... and I still have to practice a lot !!!
    But of course the light makes the recording even more beautiful. Unfortunately, you can see immediately where the light "ends". I also found out that one lamp was not enough for me personally. Since a spot effect can be seen quickly ....
    I now have a second lamp and look forward to the next vacation, in which I can hopefully now with 2 lamps "everything" illuminated. However, this means a higher effort, the lamps set again and again, let's see how neat I get this done.
    I like your Viedo and hope you do not blame me for the little critical question!
    I am glad about an answer from you, thank you!
    bye bye D.Banny

    Mike, I have always wondered if two lights work better than one light if centered. I recently bought a single i-Torch Venom 38 Video Light and wondering if I should get two? Any thoughts?

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Adeel Khan Two lights are definitely needed as the gopro has such a wide lens. on really close ups you could get away with one light or if you just want to highlight your subject with darker background.

  • @SPaige4

    at any point in this video did you use both the lights and red filter at the same time? thanks

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +SPaige4 yes I mostly use the shallow water URPro SWCY filter with both lights when filming. It keeps a little color in the background corals and makes the reds pop on the lighted subjects.

    Excellent video Mike. I just purchased a Gopro 4 for an upcoming trip (June) to Cozumel. I would like to ask about your setup. Did you use a bluewater filter in addition to your lights, or did you use the lights alone?

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +USMCRet1993 Thanks. Yes I do use a blue water filter. Links in the description. I use lights and filter. The URPRO SWCY with sola 2000's for lights. I find the combination adds just that little extra red to make everything pop!

    Based on your recommendation, i'm getting my ope water cert in cozumel @ Dive with Martin. Would you know any place in Cancun/Cozumel where one can rent a GoPro (or any action camera?)

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome great to hear you will not be disappointed with Dive With Martin!! As far as the GoPro rental I would try to do that before you arrive because i am not sure anyone has them to rent in Cozumel. I just googled GoPro rental and there is a store that rents them in my area. If you go that rout don't forget to order a filter from Snakeriver prototyping. If you want to rent a entire set up with lights and filters *I think Backscatter in the USA could probably help you out. You could also try some Cozumel or local forums and see if you might rent or borrow one in your area. I would at the very least wait until you have fully completed the course before taking a camera with you. But once you have you will see that having your buoyancy skills down will help you get good shots! I am happy for you and wish i was younger when I got certified I hope you have many years of enjoyment under the water!

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      + Mike Gerrie "...wish i was younger when I got certified..."
      I know the feeling: I started snorkeling when I was 13, and took a few scuba dives with friends around the same time, as well as an "Introduction to Scuba Diving" class in my 30s, but I didn't get certified until I was 61. On the other hand, better late than never!

    Do you think I should wait for the GoPro Jero 5? Relase date is October 2k15:D

    • @gearbow
      @gearbow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cape Kon Im a little late, lol but if you still don't have one there will be one in October 2016 i believe not sure how big a improvement it will be. Been rumors that there will be 6 or 8k ( I highly doubt that to be the case. ) I am hoping for 4k at 60fps and some in camera stabilization. That is still wishful thinking as the tech is just not there. Memory is not fast enough and sensors overheat at those specs. I am plenty satisfied with the current GoPro 4 Black. My next Camera will probably be something like the Sony RX-100 IV. But at 3 times the cost the GoPro is still a great value.
