  • Freediving Million Dollar Point on the Island of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu.
At the end of WWII, the Americans who occupied Vanuatu made a decision to leave behind a lot of excess equipment, vehicles and machinery. They offered to sell this to the locals at a discounted price. However thinking that they would get the equipment for free when the Americans left, they refused.
Out of spite, the Americans built a wharf on the island of Santo, and over a few days, dumped all the excess equipment in the sea using JCB diggers, drove cars and jeeps into the sea and finally wedged the accelerator open on the JCB's and drove them in too, resulting in a mass of metal at the bottom of the ocean.
Some was salvaged by the locals, but large portions still remain today, between 3m down to around 30m, making it a great dive for snorkelers, freedivers and scuba divers.

Back in the 70/80s I took dive trips to Vanuatu and Santo, did an article in NZ Diver magazine featuring the Lady n horse on the Coolidge, I went down the day before filming to give her a clean with the then owner of Dive Santo, and original salvage diver Alan Powers, he was one of the clean up crew tasked with retrieving the bunker oil off the Coolidge so it did not pollute the local environment, wonderful place, special memories.

I wonder how much fuel and oil was left in the fuel tanks when the yanks pushed the equipment over the side.

Yes it's quite sad really and such a waste. The only plus side is it makes a great dive site. Sorry for the very late reply!
