Truth about Fabric!

Hi Chuck. Can we do French drain without sum pump?
Been watching Chuck for a while now to do my own drainage on a wet Florida acre, this guy is the best!
Ive been in construction for 24 years now. Over the past 7 years we have ran our own home renovations business. I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your videos. We too take much pride in the work we do, but also that we truly care about taking care of our clients.
Big thanks to you for sharing your knowledge and experience
Great demonstration!
You are very passionate about your work.
Thanks Chuck! I really appreciate your expert advise and soil science! I live in a high water table area in an old home (in SE PA) that once leveraged the local water shed and a nearby stream to operate a grain mill in the late 1800's. The mill is long gone but the high ground water is still present. In fact, I recently installed a sump pit in my detached garage to stop the chronic flooding I experience in heavy rains. The sump pit in my home's basement is fed from an internal basement foundation perimeter french drain using perforated 4" flex pipe enveloped with 3/4" stone, without fabric. This replaced the original 1869 2" ID terracotta loose fitting pipe and golf ball sized stone french drain system which I found to be packed with silt when I had replaced it about 20 years ago. So far, so good! The french drain outlet into the sump pit looks like an open fire hydrant during extended, heavy rain events. I don't know why, but whenever I hear my sump pump running I now think of Apple Drains!
Take care!
Jim
Great demonstration and makes so much sense...thx Chuck
Very informative and convincing. I cant agree more that fabric is not required for clay soil. Also i never heard big agricultural farmers needing a fabric when putting down their pipes under the ground.
i'm in the north east and have clay, do you recommend using fabric or not for basement sum pit to drain out the ground water.
Good to see a demonstration like this Chuck, but remember it's about pressure too. So when you were showing that fabric holding that tiny puddle of water, you have to imagine that under a downpour the pressure would be much higher which would force more water through that fabric.
Also as an additional test you should take that fabric that you say is saturated, and pour water through it and compare it to a new piece of fabric and see how they perform.
It would be interesting to see the same demonstration but with slotted pipe this time as a comparison.
I like it, can you do a demo with that solid perferated pipe with no gravel just the soil what would happen? I like you more than than french man guy, that uses geo fabric a lot
Ok so this was done with slotted pipe, what about the corrugated pipe with the slits?????
Great demonstration, so informative, thanks as always!!
I did a french drain with a catch basin last weekend because my wife complained about standing water in the yard. I used a liners over the catch basin opening for easy clean up for if/when I have to pull the cap off.
Does the fabric extend the life of the system? That’s what we need to know.
If you use fabric lined drain encasing 12in x 12in of gravel with a centered 4in perforated pipe, the fabric will maintain the gravel voids and allow much more flow. Its also important for people to know they need to maintain 1/4in per foot slope for drainage all the way to the end. They can also add catch basins with a cover grill for water entry. Any way about it,there are different ways to make a good French Drain for whatever type of soil and water issue.
Enjoy your videos. Always informative
what is the name of the paper or cloth that you put in the pipe
Will a French drain hurt a water well? I have standing water near (roughly 10 feet) my well head. I would like to get rid of the standing water but don’t want to hurt my well. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!
Chuck, if you don't use Fabric then the soil will become incorporated into the stone. The stone will then be like mud and the fines will get into the pipe, thus restricting flow of water.
The textile will clog up and then it does not work. I need fast solution for rain water. Even when the fabric was completely new and clean it slowed down the flow too much and I got rid of it. I guess Each situation is different and you have to figure out what works for you the best.
Rock and soil mix will flow less water because water does not flow through rock it must go around it. Fabric maintains the voids around the gravel for which water will flow better than. Through soil alone.
Yes this is my understanding. I’ve just taken apart a 20 year old French drain which didn’t have any geo fabric and it was totally clogged with mud the pipe, the rocks everything. The geo fabric stops the gravel and pipe from clogging up. Short term sure it slowly the drainage of water. But long term it stops muds from entering into the system and clogging it up.
Good 👍 job bro
Hello. I have just bought a piece of land beside my house which is 82m2 and it has about 300mm of clay on the top, under the clay we have amazing drainage into compacted rubble.
Do you have any suggestions on how to drain it better with keeping the costs low? Someone suggested using an auger and digging a hole every 1.5metres then fill it with stones.
Do you have any recommendations? I’m in SW England. Thanks
hey sir im worried about my french drain. does the trench have to fill up 3-4 inches before it enters the pipe? the only way to achieve slope was to raise the high side
Where can I find your demo video about the drain with no wrap only gravel?
What about a pipe with a sock surrounded by gravel then? I did this in my yard because I thought it would keep out roots and soil debris, did I make a mistake?
Hi David, it will work. Be sure to maintenance and cleaning every 3 to 5 years for best results 👌

Thanks Chuck - I have to run another line approximately 100 yards, digging it by hand OMG, I need to drain my yard as it’s an old farm field. I’m going to be running Stone to the surface the whole way, The trench is only 5 inches wide but about 12 to 15 inches deep. So the pipe would just fit, should I go with the corrugated pipe and no sock or with a sock? I was thinking a sock because the sides of the pipe will be touching the dirt probably. @apple drains
... also thank you Bob
The proof the test = the fact 🤙🏽
Now fabric on the top only?! Dude! I’m about to start this project
come up here to Washington and dig through some glacier till. broken teeth on buckets happen all the time. plus sometimes you get lucky and find a 8'x10'x4' granite rock
I'm in Tacoma so know how you feel! Decided after digging last fall to wait for the spring. MUCH easier when it's saturated. Still a pain to haul away...
@@ShadowDarken yeah, almost no one wants it... though I'm close to iron mountain mine and they will take mid muck or till for reclamation.
what about the same test with just a perforated pipe without gravel or fabric?
I like that people make videos and share knowledge and appreciate you doing so however I just had to point out some issues I have knowledge of. I have researched and installed French Drains myself without any issue and happy customers. It is always good advice to follow manufacturer directions. Engineers who deal with this type of thing should not always readily be dismissed about their products (fabric lined drains) which they have a greater understanding of. For plumbers and electricians, it is a Code requirement to first follow manufacturer instructions for their listed products before code. If listed, they have been specifically tested and approved.
What type of guitar is in that case?
Thank you!
Yes, fabric pores can clog, especially with clay. Maybe use sand or loam next to the fabric.
Will a French drain work without an outlet?
sam doan Hi Sam, Without an outlet, essentially you make a long dry well. It must discharge to daylight or to a sump pump and the pump will lift it up and send it out. 🍎Apple Drains
@@appledrains Thanks, far back yard(graded that way) is holding water but I don't really have an option for an outlet
@@samdoan8525 you could put a sump pump out there if you can get electricity to that area.
How big can you make a French drain as in length
@@SlackerU thanks for the reply 🙏 so it can't be to long ?
Great video 👍
dont you need fabric to avoid the soil to absorb the rocks?
Salvador Nobre Veiga nope, not with clay
@@LDSKIPPER1911 I built an open French drain last year with non-woven geotexile filter fabric (the fabric in this video is NOT the right fabric) topped with round rock. The topper of rock is NOT wrapped and is already migrating into the side soil (silty clay). Wrap your pipes gents.
Takes about 8 bags of gravel from Lowes to fill up 10 feet of a trench, weighs about 400 lbs. Ez flow is ALOT lighter and I would have probably chosen it if I didn't drive ATVs over where my french drain is.
he did a video of easy drain that was in a driveway for a longtime and was driven over... he dug it up and it worked perfect.. should be in his video list..
That is not needle punch non woven geotextile fabric. Try again but get 4oz true fabric.
