As mentioned in an older post, this is EXACTLY why i miss my lane target 5 boards to the left so often. And likely why i have problems picking up the 10 pin so often. I do often lose balance and fall off to the right after delivery. Cant wait to work on this
Great video. I wish you lived in Oklahoma I would come see you. I picked up bowling on my own 25 plus years ago. Small towns bowling coaches are few and far between. I laid off 15yrs now coming back I want my game the best it has ever been and you are helping me do that. So thanks so very much. I had abdominal surgery the14th of dec 21. Saturday was my first real day bowling since surgery, I rolled 710. After setting out 6 weeks I was plenty happy with that. It has been almost 20 years since I broke 700. I only did it one other time and it was a 719. But I see many more in my future. Keep them coming.
I’m 52 and this September I will have only been bowling for 3 years. As I progress I’m picking up more and more and the sliding part has been a tough one to pick up. This was a great video explaining the difference between the direction of the slide as it pertains to the target.
This is an underrated aspect of bowling. I've struggled with this simply due to how my legs are built and my feet pronate. I've been working on it for the past few weeks. Sadly my highschool coaches never really did anything for me. Since I was already the better player I just had to deal with the few problems I had in my style. All this lead to days where just nothing worked.
I have been having the exact same problem! I have 2 balls I haven't been using because I can't get them to stop hooking moving left until finally it never comes back. Thanks for the video!
Yes! But also be careful when sliding towards your target which may also be your ball path. Your ankle can get in the way. There is a fine line with ball and foot paths so they parallel and not intersect.
I think changing your starting board by moving a bit to the left and moving diagonally towards your target would be a more natural way to go. I think of it in my brain to being something like if you were still moving straight ahead and the lane was turned slightly to the left (for a right hander) beforehand.
Yea I'm a planter I just never been able to get into sliding. I started researching around because i started getting "knee" pain nd it was consistent with the majority of "knee" pain ppl experience from bowling but I found out it was actually knee pain it was IT Band strain. Now I do IT Band stretches nd no longer get the pain
Because if you go heel-toe and allow the knee to continue in front of the toes softly after the shot you won't damage your knee. Knee pain for planters comes from an abrupt stop to throw the ball. My knees and ankles feel better now that I stopped sliding than they ever did. Back as well. Plus, I don't have to worry about slick or sticky approaches now. Running shoes are great to promote the continuation of the knee, and teach you proper form because they're built to propel you forward. I'm gonna attempt barefoot/minimalist shoes next to see how that affects things.
i really needed this, i could never figure out which way i should slide. is there a direction your foot should point aswell or does anything work in that regard?
Thanks JR, that makes sense, but what I’m needing to make sure of is if I’m bowling with an angle is my whole body supposed to also go towards my target, or does Fred Borden’s teaching still apply? He mentions about turning your body towards your target but still moving your body straight ahead. That always seemed like my body would be working against itself.
So I have a question, do you mean I should start my approach heading toward my target or head in a straight line then slide to my target direction. I always thought you walk towards the target and then slide to that target. NONE of which I have been doing over the last 8 years. Reason I am watching to rebuild my game. I have 13 300 games but have not bowled one in 8 years or so. My game is so messed up right now. I am fixing it. Last Monday in League was a huge step in the right direction, no pun intended haha.
I have an issue when I have to get left and play a big hook. If I walk toward the mark, I have to walk on such an angle that my starting position puts me into the ball return. I started walking straight up the lane, but I've been having accuracy/consistency issues lately. Can you do this just on your last step, to give more room on the approach?
I've had hip surgeries, and sometimes one hip or the other will cause me a lot of pain. When my left hip is hurting, my brain forces my front foot to close. I always miss right when I can't stop it from happening.
If right handed players push into a (at first) light left foot , even heavier bowlers can learn to slide as they release. A sticky thumb and a bad slide can lead to a Fred Flintstone moment.
@@Tenpindoctors Hello JR, I enjoy your instructions and your commentary on your tournaments. My left foot is supinated (points outward to the left), so I have problems sliding to the right. Do have any suggestions on how I can slide toward my target (to the right)?
@@PantherBlitz one thing is if you’re crossing all the boards a say you have to roll over the 20 board most times the ball return would be in the way so you wouldn’t be able to do that properly plus if you do that you could slide right of the target and also could open your body or close it too much
It is a bit confusing. It appears that you want to walk a straight line and slide towards your target. In reality I have seen very few people that do not drift a little. I tend to drift two boards towards my target. I might be better to think of it as slide in the same direction as your target. I practice occasionally at home with a piece of tape on the floor. Walking as straight as possible then sliding where the tape ends in the direction of my target. Unfortunately my wood floors are not slick enough so it’s less of a slide and more of a plant.

Really good stuff. Just what I needed today. Right on target!

This could be why I miss my target left more often than I should. Thxs for the tips and video's J.R.

I'm learning a lot with Raymond video.

I've been waiting for this video!!
I look forward to working on this.
Just what I’ve been looking for. My transition from 4th to 5th step is weak…thx brother!
This really helps a lot!! Thanks
Glad it helps!

So you walk diagonally from your starting board towards your target arrow?
Or change direction at last second on you slide step?

Thank you for including us "planters". Can we get a video showing that planting isn't as destructive to the knee as once thought?

@@jamesgray5741 yea a lot people don’t realize the bands and hips cause knee pain a lot of times. Tight hips and tendons cause pain in central places

I have a problem with falling off and 'hopping' to catch my balance. I definitely need to work on this. I notice the less I 'hop' the better I bowl
I know it’s unorthodox, but I walk diagonal towards my target ultimately drifting right (right handed) so I end up square to my target….works for me.

Hey JR is there a way to ask you a one on one question?
Thanks..
I truly struggle with my approach
So walk straight and slide towards your target, right? Not walk towards your target and slide towards your target. Did I get it correctly? Thanks.
Correct do not walk towards your target
@@Tenpindoctors I can't visualize this. Why not walk towards the target in order to stay smooth and consistant?

Do you slide toward your target if your target is short vs long?
Your foot should always be pointed towards the ball
