The breakfast cereals thing is a way for them to counter the accusations they get. They can point to it and say something like "See, we're just a silly men's club, we're not terrorists".
It is kind of silly. I mean, I imagine them whacking on me and my saying obscure shit like "Kretschmer's Toasted Wheat Germ... Puffa Puffa Rice ... Uncle Sam Cereal...
That's why Klan members had/have silly titles like Grand Dragon or Imperial Cyclops. To say "it's a goofy boy's club" to the forward facing public. It's also the reason for the silly name Proud Boys.
As an aside, the English Fascist Party had a similar group called the Biff Boys back in the 30s.

I'm in a lot of online groups that cater to fandoms like Star Wars and 40k and there are so many right wing pages for those fandoms that will straight up say "I don't care what the authors say is supposed to be the moral of this story, the bad guys are right"
To answer Katie's question about what this ideology is, and why it isn't left or right: They don't have one. They have grievances. It's a group of man-children that only have problems with lines they've personally crossed. They want to do drugs without regulation, they want guns even though they're felons, they want the jails to collapse so they don't have to worry about going back. It's a philosophy of "don't tell me what to do" that attracts men too stubborn to even enforce their own clubhouse rituals.
Everything they say is drenched in irony and deniability, it was set up by Gavin McInnes to be like this. It didn't really help form a true group solidarity, so when the FBI came calling, it all fell apart (it didn't help that Unicorn Riot found their member and chapter lists online and posted them.) Allegedly they are trying to rebuild after so many key members went to jail, but time will tell.

Proud of Your Boy is a song about Aladdin self-reflecting, vowing to become a better person to make his mother proud and no longer stay a “street rat”. It simply could not be further from the ethos of the Proud Boys who are so allergic to self reflection it would make them sick.
I think I see where my friend got his insane views. Back in 2018, I didn't know about the "Proud Boys" but his idea was basically "The government shouldn't help anyone...if you need help, you should have made your own arrangemnts, or your family should help you." It's such simplistic bullshit. Worst thing is he felt like he was the smartest debater ever. It's so sad that he got roped into this garbage.
Did he read "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged" before spouting off these Libertarian/Objectivist ideas?

When I was a kid we used to get quarters to play video games at the local bar and grill. We woukd just play the same song on the jukebox over and over again "Help me Rhonda" by The Beach Boys is an excellent song for this. 😂 We were terrible children!

"Chauvinist" is one of those words whose meaning has been so shaped by a specific context (in this case, sexism/misogyny) that many people don't even know what the word actually means outside of that particular context. A misogynist is a MALE chauvinist, but one can be chauvinistic about basically anything. I've long referred to myself as a West-coast chauvinist.

The wild part, is that the Proud Boys was started as a joke. The founder was eventually kicked from the group by the guys who took it all too seriously.

@Ashenblade I disagree with this as a blanket statement. There have been plenty of people who were just messing around when stuff happened that they did not intend. We must be careful to not accuse people who are only guilty of being fallible humans.
