I'd like to believe that instead of vanishing for no reason, the brothers just didn't realize they had beaten their final enemy since he was so pathetic and kept going on their adventure to find the boss of the Black Shadow Warriors. Poor guys.
Return of Double Dragon had a longer development cycle but in fact the ending in that one is still unfinished! In the original draft, Duke was part of another part of twin Sou-setsu-ken masters like Billy and Jimmy. Eventually, it was cut down to introducing him to be the Lees' best childhood friend and fellow martial arts masters, but even this was cut in the final version. There exist unused dialogue portraits for Billy, Jimmy, and two of the enemies, that would ideally be used for cutscenes like DDII where this would be explained. After Duke is defeated and Marian is rescued, Duke's shadow doppelganger would materialize out of his body like DDII and exit the hall. You'd leave Marian behind to chase after him, entering a large hallway surrounded by flames on both sides and fighting off a gauntlet of new shadow doppelgangers of various enemies you've already faced while Duke's shadow taunts you. In the end you face off with him, and he warns that his death will mean Duke's death and the Double Dragons will have lost their old friend. A new final boss track would play for this fight. In the end he is defeated and Duke's spirit speaks its final words of appreciation to Billy and Jimmy before he dies for good. The ending shows the brothers and Marian have gathered in front of his tombstone later on--Billy gives a kung-fu gesture of respect as a tear rolls down his cheek, reliving the memories of his childhood. The ending credits display the title: Return of Double Dragon. The End. Man that arcade DD2 ending is depressing, especially with the picture of them all together and then the tear drop falling from Marian's eye to make "The End" sheesh man. Never saw that version. I owned the NES version as a kid.

I can see Marion's underwear when she kisses Billy in the arcade Double Dragon! They made her skirt longer in the NES version. Also, the real star of that ending is the kitty under the table.
I just thought that the shorter leg should be the one closest to Billy...and it was kind of endearing the animation done on her, when she got in contact with Billy. He is just still stunned after beating his brother.

There's a fan remake of Super Double Dragon called Legend Of Double Dragon which addresses a lot of things that the original fell short on plus some amazing combo moves from many other fighting games.

Don't forget the Turbo Grafix 16 CD/PC Engine CD version of Double Dragon II, which also has a "beat on hardest difficulty and bring Marian back to life" unlockable ending (along with some pretty killer cut scenes for the time.)

the worst part is, we know that wasn't the original Japanese text, since it just goes right into the Staff credits in the Japanese version. So some English 'expert' in charge of localization made that blunder, from the beginning of Double Dragon 3 NES (BIMMY AND JIMMY) till the end of Super Double Dragon SNES Technos America needed some better proofreaders.
Want a worst ending than the Super Double Dragons? Play the 3rd for the arcade. The Lee brothers defeat the villain (which was a mummy for plot reasons), they discover it's treasure, and give EVERYTHING to charity. I don't mind the heroes being good guys, but let me enjoy some spoils dammit.

The Lee brothers accept, and it becomes a travel around the world trying to stop the Shadow Warriors and destroy the stones.

I remember when I first emulated Return of Double Dragon after having played Super Double Dragon on SNES as a kid, getting to where the game goes on past the final room and thought "Whoa, there's more?! Awesome!" and then finding out that this version of the game has no ending at all, not even the lousy text crawl!
In Return of DD, you can actually use the Hurricane Kick to inflict damage to enemies. It is a multi-hitting tecnique that can even take regulars enemies out if it connects all hits. High damage! Also, the enemies that slide have a pre-animated sequence, so you have more luck it trying to block/countering with spin kick.
Fun fact: the pc engine version of dd 2 has the same ending and levels as the nes ones, but it also has fully animated cutscenes and when the shadow warrior dies he turns into a skeleton

He used it to intimidate his loons, his rivals, and the people he terrorized. To his embarrassment, however; he didn't know how to take it off of saftey (a mechanic in most guns that prevents misfires by locking the trigger). When he lost the final battle in the first game, he took a little time to learn how the gun works before reappearing in revenge.

For me the best DD game I ever played is Double Dragon Advance, it has so moves from DD1 and DD2 and good combos. Marian still alive and she goes to the dojo with billy and jimmy to train with them. You can see her in River city girls she owns a shop and sell you stuff, the same with Billy and Jimmy they teach you moves in thier dojos. I‘m glad Arc system works got the rights of DD so you can expect a good DD game in the future.
They didn't even need to resort to that silly deus ex machina to undo Marian's death, because the villiain's gimmick was ILLUSIONS! Why not just make her death one of his illusions to lure the Lee brothers to his lair?

That multiplayer ending in the first game where the two players fight each other reminds me a lot of Crash Bash's Adventure Mode's Tie Breaker if its done in two player and the players have chosen characters from the opposing sides.
I was surprised when I discovered that the SNES Double Dragon's Train level is actually a track I remember fondly from the Newgrounds days, it was remixed by Paragon X9, I didn't even know it was a remix back then, but man I got a nostalgia overload!
You forgot the Genesis version of DD2 (JP), there's no ending, but it shows the player getting their butts whooped in flashback style, like you can tell Marian's death really got to him, which is clearly understandable.
I can understand a panty shot when Marian is thrown over a dude's shoulder, but the one at the end is just gratuitous. I feel like a creep for seeing it while she kisses Billy.
Yes I totally always said that about the Arcade of Double Dragon 2’s story and why it’s called “The Revenge”, the brothers fight the entire gang again consumed with nothing but rage and vengeance in their hearts and they proceed to beat every single member of the shadow warriors to death until they get to the final palace, and after killing Willy. They then have to fight that inner demon within themselves called “Vengeance” and it’s a battle I think that takes place in both of their minds, they either live as killers consumed by Rage, Guilt and Anger, or they move on and kill that new dark side of them, it is truly their only way to move on, and that’s to conquer their inner demons and be at peace with losing Marion and themselves. “They were becoming what they fought against” Now that is a very powerful message for an old school beat em up arcade.
Sadly that is true, unless it’s the alternate NES good ending universe, after they fight the Supreme Master, a strange miracle happens and Marion returns to life and runs into Billy’s arms and that ending still gives me goosebumps til this day, and the music makes it more impactful, I’m so glad that “Git” showed that ending in this video. In NES DD 3 since Marion was resurrected, the dark Egyptian Princess Noiram also had returned and possessed Marion, a part of me thinks that the dark Egyptian Princess was resurrected at the same time along with Marion after the Dragons killed “The Supreme Master”, the Princess’ soul hitched a ride back along with Marion and was waiting for the right time to fully return to her natural form and get the Sacred Stones to rule the world. This is just my theory, but I know that I am probably wrong, it would have connected NES DD 2 and NES DD 3 together perfectly too.
I like your theory, and I don’t discredit it because Double Dragon 2 The Revenge the arcade version was a very dark, gritty and kinda creepy beat em up when you really think about everything within the game. What makes me believe your theory is the fact that player 2 is wearing silver or white and player 1 Billy is dark blue, when I was younger I even always questioned why Jimmy was wearing white instead of his red attire and I didn’t even know if it was Jimmy to begin with. This is the first time I heard of this theory you spoke of and It brings a lot more questions to Double Dragon 2 The Revenge’s Arcade story.
Kind of feel sorry for the master villain in the SNES game. He's just a normal casual tall guy, a pawn with no special powers who's made to be in charge of the evil operation, presumably after the worst offenders got away in a private helicopter? When Bimmy and Jimmy (cue AVGN) show up he's like " What? No special music to pump me up even? Oooh shite, whatever, I guess I'll have to show up then..." and timidly lurks into view and hopes he won't arouse too much attention and then gets broken like a dry twig; his status only given away by his dramatic slow motion fall.
I think Double Dragon 2 the revenge on NES and Super Double Dragon is still my most favorite ones. Kind of wish part 1,2 and 3 got a slight full remake with more detailed story.
I love super double dragon the most. I remember renting it from blockbuster's back in the day, my brother was Billy (older) so I was always Jimmy. Even though my favorite color was blue. I never beat the game at a young age but for shuts and giggles I fired it up in the SNES and beat it with my mom lol great game.
It was brought back in the Game Boy Advance version. And although it sounded they'd gone into space, it was just over right/left field depending on perspective.
The NES version's finale may also explain why in the Double Dragon animated series, they had the "mysterious Shadow Boss" as Jimmy Lee for the first episode and half the second episode.

It’s very simple but very effective, and back then you usually didn’t see games attempt a more gut-wrenching true ending like that. Btw, are you a Kingdom Hearts fan? The Remind DLC actually has a bad ending for the final secret boss, and it’s very interesting.

Yeah. The SNES version lack of any ending is a huge bummer for a LONG game. I play it strictly because of its great gameplay...just not the whole game, its too long dammit! I play the Super Double Dragon when I want to see Billy's uppercut in action. Otherwise, its always Return of the Double Dragon for everything else. If you want most of the best of what Nintendo has shown of Double Dragon on a remake of the 1st arcade game, with an actual story/ending, play the Game Boy Advance version! For many, it is the best!
For those wondering, the thing about Billy's uppercut...he's the only one who has it. Jimmy uses something like an "inside hook". The uppercut has a special effect on the opponents, and sound effect; but....one the japanese version(Return of DD) the enemy WILL dodge it most of the times! However they will never do it on Jimmy's inside hook. On the American version(Super DD) however, the enemy will never dodge that uppercut.
I think of the why then fight his shadow clones (arcade and nes) is both the Fury them have after Marian got killed,having both fighting they our revenge,illusion or whatever they have from revenge

Double Dragon Neon had the best, most lovely good ending of all though. Also catchy as hell.
It isn't much, considering that the end credits broke the flow, especially when it has a song done in the style of a Brentalfloss ballad.

That multiplayer ending in the first game where the two players fight each other reminds me a lot of Crash Bash's Adventure Mode's Tie Breaker if its done in two player and the players have chosen characters from the opposing sides.

You forgot the Genesis version of DD2 (JP), there's no ending, but it shows the player getting their butts whooped in flashback style, like you can tell Marian's death really got to him, which is clearly understandable.

I can understand a panty shot when Marian is thrown over a dude's shoulder, but the one at the end is just gratuitous. I feel like a creep for seeing it while she kisses Billy.

Yes I totally always said that about the Arcade of Double Dragon 2’s story and why it’s called “The Revenge”, the brothers fight the entire gang again consumed with nothing but rage and vengeance in their hearts and they proceed to beat every single member of the shadow warriors to death until they get to the final palace, and after killing Willy.
They then have to fight that inner demon within themselves called “Vengeance” and it’s a battle I think that takes place in both of their minds, they either live as killers consumed by Rage, Guilt and Anger, or they move on and kill that new dark side of them, it is truly their only way to move on, and that’s to conquer their inner demons and be at peace with losing Marion and themselves.

Now that is a very powerful message for an old school beat em up arcade.

Sadly that is true, unless it’s the alternate NES good ending universe, after they fight the Supreme Master, a strange miracle happens and Marion returns to life and runs into Billy’s arms and that ending still gives me goosebumps til this day, and the music makes it more impactful, I’m so glad that “Git” showed that ending in this video.
In NES DD 3 since Marion was resurrected, the dark Egyptian Princess Noiram also had returned and possessed Marion, a part of me thinks that the dark Egyptian Princess was resurrected at the same time along with Marion after the Dragons killed “The Supreme Master”, the Princess’ soul hitched a ride back along with Marion and was waiting for the right time to fully return to her natural form and get the Sacred Stones to rule the world.
This is just my theory, but I know that I am probably wrong, it would have connected NES DD 2 and NES DD 3 together perfectly too.
I like your theory, and I don’t discredit it because Double Dragon 2 The Revenge the arcade version was a very dark, gritty and kinda creepy beat em up when you really think about everything within the game.
What makes me believe your theory is the fact that player 2 is wearing silver or white and player 1 Billy is dark blue, when I was younger I even always questioned why Jimmy was wearing white instead of his red attire and I didn’t even know if it was Jimmy to begin with.
This is the first time I heard of this theory you spoke of and It brings a lot more questions to Double Dragon 2 The Revenge’s Arcade story.
Kind of feel sorry for the master villain in the SNES game. He's just a normal casual tall guy, a pawn with no special powers who's made to be in charge of the evil operation, presumably after the worst offenders got away in a private helicopter? When Bimmy and Jimmy (cue AVGN) show up he's like " What? No special music to pump me up even? Oooh shite, whatever, I guess I'll have to show up then..." and timidly lurks into view and hopes he won't arouse too much attention and then gets broken like a dry twig; his status only given away by his dramatic slow motion fall.
Might be reasonable to trim "Creepy Bad" from the video title moving forward. Just "Endings # 81" for the next one, maybe.
I think Double Dragon 2 the revenge on NES and Super Double Dragon is still my most favorite ones.
Kind of wish part 1,2 and 3 got a slight full remake with more detailed story.
I love super double dragon the most. I remember renting it from blockbuster's back in the day, my brother was Billy (older) so I was always Jimmy. Even though my favorite color was blue. I never beat the game at a young age but for shuts and giggles I fired it up in the SNES and beat it with my mom lol great game.
I think Double Dragon 2 on the NES had this jumping knee attack, somewhat tough to do but once you got it down it'd launch enemies to space
It was brought back in the Game Boy Advance version. And although it sounded they'd gone into space, it was just over right/left field depending on perspective.

I’m here to be one of the cynics and say the sad ending in the second game is better. It’s very simple but very effective, and back then you usually didn’t see games attempt a more gut-wrenching true ending like that.

Double Dragon II on NES system is my favorite of all.
The girl in Master System version seems like a creepy weird doll, so you will get a creepy ending anyway.

Yeah. The SNES version lack of any ending is a huge bummer for a LONG game. I play it strictly because of its great gameplay...just not the whole game, its too long dammit!
I play the Super Double Dragon when I want to see Billy's uppercut in action. Otherwise, its always Return of the Double Dragon for everything else.
If you want most of the best of what Nintendo has shown of Double Dragon on a remake of the 1st arcade game, with an actual story/ending, play the Game Boy Advance version! For many, it is the best!
For those wondering, the thing about Billy's uppercut...he's the only one who has it. Jimmy uses something like an "inside hook". The uppercut has a special effect on the opponents, and sound effect; but....one the japanese version(Return of DD) the enemy WILL dodge it most of the times! However they will never do it on Jimmy's inside hook. On the American version(Super DD) however, the enemy will never dodge that uppercut.

having to murder your twin brother (or be killed) in the first Double Dragon, having your girlfriend murdered at the second Double Dragon and the twins going on a murder spree for vengeance in the second Double Dragon, then the tragic backstory from Super Double Dragon that got taken out (they went overbudget on the game and cut out tons of content) was pretty creepy to me.
