Tyr probably meant "human" in the sense of "mortal". The same kind of thing happens in the G12 storyline in Mabinogi, when your character wishes to remain "human", even if they are an elf or a giant. Oversight by translation staff? Probably.
Yeah, the final bosses are pretty tedious, especially without Agni. They just gave them a ton of HP without anything threatening or interesting AI script changes. Still a good game overall, but you're right about the end.
If you're doing Breath of Fire 2 you might want to look into the re-translation hack. Or just show us the hilarity of the original translation. Personally I'd be very interested in seeing you tackle the entire BoF-series.
I know this LP is old, but I used it to help with my own playthrough on the Switch's GBA library. This was a great LP, and I appreciate your help and guidance! You're hilarious, and this was a great tool for helping me experience this great game!
Another great lets play. I really need to make the time to try out the Breath of Fire games. Eventually I'll at least get to this one as I'm trying to get myself caught up to your own catalog and eventually might replay while watching with you to get a complete game. Thanks for making the videos and all the work you do!
***** I actually liked the first one better. The 2nd improved in a quite few areas, but it also felt a bit less focussed and all over the place compared to the first and I liked the graphics of this one better. The 2nd game feels more like a transitional game where they were looking to find their own style but not yet fully achieving it like they did in BoF3. I still love all of them though
ah man, this was great. my gaming childhood wasn't very extensive so i rarely get the nostalgia factor when you do lps, but i was feeling it hardcore with this one. i still remember using the nintendo power walkthrough to get through this game as a kid. you'll be pleased to know that your own lp was much more in depth and entertaining though. in the end, it's certainly not the best game ever, but i'm really glad you played it.
Earthbound's ending is plenty interactive. You get to see the whole world after the alien invasion, and can even re-rent the bike and ride it in the swamp! It's too bad you'll never play it.
Congrats on defeating Tyr and getting the good ending. The first time I played, I didn't bother getting the Dragon spells. It wasn't until I replayed it that I got the good ending. You raise a good question. Why doesn't Tyr recognize Bleu? I'd recognize my sister if she sealed me away for a few centuries.
HC, BoF2 is available on GBA along with the SNES (the other further games require PS1 and higher) BoF2 REALLY changes up how Ryu interracts with his dragon form. There is so SO much less "Okay this is the best way to fight and that's that". To sum it up succinctly... Dragons are one shot spells based on how much AP you currently have. I look forward to you eventually starting BoF2. I loved this trip down memory lane.
I remember when I played this a kid, I had no Acorns on me during the final boss fight so I HAD to do without Agni. Was quite the tough fight but I managed. I was far more leveled which helped too.
I still think HCBailly would be the type to enjoy EarthBound. Great music, Inteactive ending, witty dialogue. The battle system is a lot like the old dragon quests. Or maybe it is a affliction of the Bailly curse that we haven't known about until now
When you get around to BOF2, I highly recommend the retranslation patch, as I've said before. The only reason to choose the original localization over it is to tear Capcom's incompetence apart MST-style. Great LP as always, although I wish you would have shown off the M.Slime, some of the high level spells, and Jade's "I'm bored, entertain me!" sequence. Very excited for Actraiser too. My uncle had that game, and I would play it every time I visited him.
7:45 I asume Tyr refers Ryu as human since the dragon clan isn't pure Dragon their half human and half dragon since ever the 4th gave dragons spread their gene with the other races
Although it goes without saying for the most part, will you be doing more of the Breath of fire series? I mean, of course you'll do It eventually, once the dragon quest and final fantasy series are both over, there wont be much left, but do you forsee doing them in the near future?
I've never played any of the other BoFs either... But seeing as how you're interested in it and the comments are saying good things about it, might as well give them a try! Looking forward to the next LP!
Knowing your taste for scouring a game and scooping out it's guts, BoF3 will become your treasure trove. In a way, it's a shame that your 2013 list doesnt have it, but I know you'll get round to it someday.
You should highly consider both Breath of Fire 3 and Breath of Fire 4. Great stories, especially 3 plus they've got some rather awesome mechanics to them.
I hope it doesn't take too long to get around to do a Let's Play of Breath of Fire II like it did with this one. But the wait was worth it. Another LP done and over with. Saved the world from the goddess of Destruction and was rewarded a well earned break. No longer will we see Tyr again. After all, we did defeat her. OR DID WE?!! (0_0)
Not too sure but if im looking right at things some people have a love / hate relationship with BOF:DQ, but i really do like the game, besiddes the hard to learn Dragon system ;) I remember getting the game in a store back in 2005 (was pretty luckly as they had tons of copies of it back) so yeah. Loved the game alot. Storyline is abit cheesy but still good imo
Really nice LP HCBailly, and I'm hoping you'll do a BoF2 one. If you liked this plot you'll love 2. The only bad thing about BoF2 is the rough start that will have you grind for an hour or two, and the dragon transformations are yaaaaawn boring and too easy to abuse. The retranslation is really, really good IMO, and adds a few nice things like a run button - but I always thought the original translation made the game seem darker and more ominous than it actually was, so I vote original version.
You're right HCBailly; Sara does say something like, "Don't be fooled by her innocent looks", but I don't remember exactly the wording either. Also, if you do play BoF II (which I'm certainly hoping for), it's a lot more challenging than BoF I is; it's also more... engrish, if you know what I mean.
I really loved the Game, except some minor points, like Gold grinding which i always had to do. Anyway, never saw the real ending because of Karns Fusions, but whatever, i still love it.
HCBailly: If you decide to play Breath of Fire 2, play the GBA improvement "Breath of Fresh Fire 2". It updates the battle and stat mechanics to actually make SENSE.
"You can't challenge me, your only humans." Not a single member of the party is a human, not one. Writers, you can't interchange Human or Humanity for other races you made, ESPECIALLY IF THE PARTY DOESN'T HAVE A HUMAN AMONG THEM.
This was really a great LP, didn't think I'd get into it, but I did buy BoF3 because of this LP and I'm loving that game! Looking forward to the next LP.
He's never played any of the other Breath of Fire games. Judging by what he's got lined up and his unique take on getting to newer experiences, I doubt the rest of the series will be any time soon.
I do hope you try out Breath of Fire II, I think the character interactions in that one are a lot more interesting, as they are kind of more interesting characters as well in my opinion. Though it does change some things, I like it more of the SNES ones, though BoFIII will probably always be my top pick. Also, there is a fan translation for Breath of Fire II, since the original translation is very bad, and the fan one does add a few asthetic changes, but they aren't bad. Good LP though!
Did you just diss the turban master race?! (joke, joke) On another note, turbans make me think of of Arabian fantasy, which makes me think of the merchant class from Dragon Quest III(the female merchant is my favorite class design wise, but that's going off topic).
Excellent job HCBailly, I had a lot of fun watching this. I still love 2 over this one, but you showed a lot of the magic in this. Now for BoF2, I know folks keep talking about the translation patch, but I really hope you avoid it, simply because there's so many changes made to the original scripting to tie it into the later games, and several name changes to the characters, all unchangable, that kill a lot of the game's original charm.
He has played maybe an hour or two of the very first Wild ARMs game but wasn't feeling motivated to actually play through the game. He has not played the rest of the series. I highly doubt he'll get to the series any time soon.
Haha... these games were so bad, but they had such charm, good characters and funny writing. And they were still better than Dragon Quest games, perhaps just because of those facts. So far, this LP has blinded me with pure nostalgia. Damnit, I want to play this game agai.
I recieved both Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire 2 at the same time as a kid, though I liked BOF, I was always playing BOF2 more, its so much better.....Its barely second to BOFIII which is 10/10 game, whereas BOF2 is 9/10 Please play 2 AND 3...BOF4 and 5 you can skip just 2 and 3, both are the above average RPG games of the BOF series.
If you found Breath of Fire interesting, I think you'll really get into Breath of Fire 2. You might also really get into Breath of Fire 3. Definitely BoF2 if you don't get into BoF3
Tyr probably meant "human" in the sense of "mortal". The same kind of thing happens in the G12 storyline in Mabinogi, when your character wishes to remain "human", even if they are an elf or a giant. Oversight by translation staff? Probably.

Personally I'd be very interested in seeing you tackle the entire BoF-series.
Wow, I've known this game since childhood and I had no idea Tyr had another form like that. Learn something new everyday indeed.
I know this LP is old, but I used it to help with my own playthrough on the Switch's GBA library. This was a great LP, and I appreciate your help and guidance! You're hilarious, and this was a great tool for helping me experience this great game!

Thanks for making the videos and all the work you do!
I had forgotten how short RPGs were back in the day. Of course, optimizing a playthrough like this naturally speeds things up.
"How am I gonna beat a final boss with -four- pensises like that?"
Well shit, even Persona's final boss [form 1] only had one.
Thanks a bunch HCB! I had fun playing along with you when I got stuck! I am subscribing!
I believe this was the first LP of yours I watched... and now nearly 7 years later, it was time for a rewatch.
Great Let's Play of this game. I learned a lot about a game I had as a kid. There was a lot of things I missed I guess!
And another great lp comes to a close. Great job as usual HC! Thanks for the great videos and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the walkthrough. I enjoyed the first Breath of Fire a lot.
ah man, this was great. my gaming childhood wasn't very extensive so i rarely get the nostalgia factor when you do lps, but i was feeling it hardcore with this one. i still remember using the nintendo power walkthrough to get through this game as a kid. you'll be pleased to know that your own lp was much more in depth and entertaining though. in the end, it's certainly not the best game ever, but i'm really glad you played it.
About the goddess calling you humans, maybe that was a mistranslation and was supposed to be "mortals" or something. Or she was breaking the 4th wall.
Btw HCBailly I believe what she meant by humans was "Damn mortals"
Earthbound's ending is plenty interactive. You get to see the whole world after the alien invasion, and can even re-rent the bike and ride it in the swamp! It's too bad you'll never play it.
Thanks so much for lping this game hcbailly it was a blast from the past cant wait for breath of fire 2!
Congrats on defeating Tyr and getting the good ending. The first time I played, I didn't bother getting the Dragon spells. It wasn't until I replayed it that I got the good ending.

To sum it up succinctly... Dragons are one shot spells based on how much AP you currently have.
I look forward to you eventually starting BoF2. I loved this trip down memory lane.
It's in BoF3 where they mention that Blue(Deis) is Tyr's sister, HCBailly. Sadly enough she isn't a party member in that game =(
I remember when I played this a kid, I had no Acorns on me during the final boss fight so I HAD to do without Agni. Was quite the tough fight but I managed. I was far more leveled which helped too.
Lunar 2 had an interactive epilogue, so did earthbound, chrono trigger and there must be some other that did that as well.
I still think HCBailly would be the type to enjoy EarthBound. Great music, Inteactive ending, witty dialogue. The battle system is a lot like the old dragon quests.
Or maybe it is a affliction of the Bailly curse that we haven't known about until now
Cool. I really enjoyed revisiting that slice of my childhood.
HC Bailey where is the Breath of Fire 3 Let's Play?
When you get around to BOF2, I highly recommend the retranslation patch, as I've said before. The only reason to choose the original localization over it is to tear Capcom's incompetence apart MST-style.

Thanks for this awesome LP. I'll play BOF1 myself now. And there are some RPGs with interactive endings like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.
Although it goes without saying for the most part, will you be doing more of the Breath of fire series? I mean, of course you'll do It eventually, once the dragon quest and final fantasy series are both over, there wont be much left, but do you forsee doing them in the near future?
That was a great LP, HC. Was great to watch from start to finish!
I've never played any of the other BoFs either... But seeing as how you're interested in it and the comments are saying good things about it, might as well give them a try!
Looking forward to the next LP!

Earthbound has an interactive ending
I definitely enjoyed this LP, and I'm looking forward to seeing you eventually LPing Breath of Fire II. :D
You should highly consider both Breath of Fire 3 and Breath of Fire 4. Great stories, especially 3 plus they've got some rather awesome mechanics to them.
Great work. Look forward to the next game
Tyr went Super Saiyan LOL
I hope it doesn't take too long to get around to do a Let's Play of Breath of Fire II like it did with this one. But the wait was worth it.
Another LP done and over with. Saved the world from the goddess of Destruction and was rewarded a well earned break. No longer will we see Tyr again. After all, we did defeat her.
OR DID WE?!! (0_0)
Sonic: And we're Sonic Heroes! *Everyone stares at Sonic with a look of WTF on them* I'll go back to my game now.
That was such a great LP. I really enjoyed it, I was looking forward to it for years and it was definitely worth the wait.
Really enjoyed this series, I would love to see you take on my personal favorite in the series Breath of Fire 4.
Breath of Fire 3 is amazing, like ryanclemons1 said, easily the best game in the series.
There was a mistake in the translation for Tyr's name.
Tyr and Blue do know each other and Blue did do that to her. They're si... milar.
In fact, you were ONE LEVEL AWAY. She learns Comet at 40.
It updates the battle and stat mechanics to actually make SENSE.
great walkthrough, now we need breath of fire II walkthrough please and thank you :D
played it along with you with the gba version..whew! finally done
The Last Story had an interactive ending, hell it even had an epilogue boss:)
"You can't challenge me, your only humans."
Not a single member of the party is a human, not one.
Writers, you can't interchange Human or Humanity for other races you made, ESPECIALLY IF THE PARTY DOESN'T HAVE A HUMAN AMONG THEM.
I recommend Breath of Fire IV, HCBailly. I believe you'd actually enjoy it.
WOOLSEY! Get into my office!
Nicely done on the LP to kick off this series.
Great LP, bring on the next.
Awesome as always. Any plans of doing Breath of Fire 2?
No, I don't think there's enough to it to warrant a bonus episode.
I cant wait for your BoF2 LP sir!
...or some love for the Tales series?? ;-)
Very nice LP. I'm looking forward to a hopeful BoF2 LP in the future. 3, however....I'm not sure I want you to suffer through that game.
Paper Mario has an interactive ending.
He already said he was looking at doing it some time in the future. Which I am psyched for, too. ^.^
I will be super happy if he does BoFII, Suikoden, or Wild Arms LP
WOOOOLSEY!
Great LP HC. I hope you do BoF2 in the near future, and just so you know, I thought the ending for 2 was much more climactic. :D
This was really a great LP, didn't think I'd get into it, but I did buy BoF3 because of this LP and I'm loving that game! Looking forward to the next LP.
Thanks for another awesome LP :D
Hcbaily your let's plays are awesome
Wasn't Tir/myria and bleu/deis sisters? I forget, it's been too long
hc are you going to replay your old lps like FF9 FF7 ect ?
if you liked this game's music you will love Breath of Fire 2
i actually played bof2 first, and i really really loved its music , even more than bof1
He's never played any of the other Breath of Fire games. Judging by what he's got lined up and his unique take on getting to newer experiences, I doubt the rest of the series will be any time soon.
You might not know but the GBA version has a little extra at the end it shows Ryu/Zack with the words to be continued...? Underneath
I hope you do 2, 3, and 4 in the future. I love BoF1 but the series really takes off after.
blue's conection to tyr is much deeper you willl learn that in BoF 3
I do hope you try out Breath of Fire II, I think the character interactions in that one are a lot more interesting, as they are kind of more interesting characters as well in my opinion. Though it does change some things, I like it more of the SNES ones, though BoFIII will probably always be my top pick. On another note, turbans make me think of of Arabian fantasy, which makes me think of the merchant class from Dragon Quest III(the female merchant is my favorite class design wise, but that's going off topic).
Why was the default name in the GBA version Zack?
Time to find Woolsey and arrange a meetup with HC.
uh where was Mogu, Ox, and Bleu during the scene in front of Windia before everyone leaves for their town.
Going to do BoF2,3, or 4?
Excellent job HCBailly, I had a lot of fun watching this. I still love 2 over this one, but you showed a lot of the magic in this.
Now for BoF2, I know folks keep talking about the translation patch, but I really hope you avoid it, simply because there's so many changes made to the original scripting to tie it into the later games, and several name changes to the characters, all unchangable, that kill a lot of the game's original charm.
I know you aren't the biggest fan of this game, but Earthbound has the quintessential interactive RPG ending imo
Myria is gone for a long time. But she will return eventually.
She went super saiyan?
WOOT BIG CRAZY SNAKE GODDESS
He has played maybe an hour or two of the very first Wild ARMs game but wasn't feeling motivated to actually play through the game. He has not played the rest of the series. I highly doubt he'll get to the series any time soon.
Chrono trigger interactive endings? :p
Haha... these games were so bad, but they had such charm, good characters and funny writing. And they were still better than Dragon Quest games, perhaps just because of those facts.
So far, this LP has blinded me with pure nostalgia. Damnit, I want to play this game agai.
Watch the whole video, he says he's very interested in it but hasn't played through it yet.
The Rock Golem guy reminds me of Stone Man o-o from MM5
Everything that BoF I didnt had BoF II had it good imo. Take a look HC :D
Is this the typical situation when you say you will not do that bonus episode but we annoy you so much that you end it doing it anyway? ^_^
I recieved both Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire 2 at the same time as a kid, though I liked BOF, I was always playing BOF2 more, its so much better.....Its barely second to BOFIII which is 10/10 game, whereas BOF2 is 9/10
Please play 2 AND 3...BOF4 and 5 you can skip just 2 and 3, both are the above average RPG games of the BOF series.
NO! SERAH!
...Woops. Wrong game.
NO! SARA!
If you found Breath of Fire interesting, I think you'll really get into Breath of Fire 2. You might also really get into Breath of Fire 3.
Definitely BoF2 if you don't get into BoF3
Well that was an anticlimactic final battle.
nice ending man i own the offical comic page in the nintendo power 1992 issue with the sonic and knuckles cover so ya heh
