Don’t you need to use an oxygen absorber and vacuum seal the jar? That was my understanding (for long term storage)

    • @terryhenderson424
      @terryhenderson424 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MichelleSchmus it is my understanding that to get the umpteen million year storage, or those 20 to 25 years, you need to use a mylar bag and not a jar. I know that some things you absolutely do not use oxygen absorbers, for some you absolutely should use them, and yet others it simply prolongs the shelf life. In the case of these legumes im guessing that an oxygen absorber is not needed for several year's worth of storage because a properly but traditionally dried and stored legume can last on the shelf for several years. In the case of regular, store bought legumes if they haven't gotten wet before and after you bought them and dont absorb ambient moisture from the air while being stored, they just continue to dry out and shrink while being stored; else they can mold or something, you can tell by looking at them. I don't know what happens to them nutritionally but you can use them of you soak them upto a LONG time; if they dont rehydrate you toss them but if you're seriously hungry....

Thank you for sharing. My mom and my grandmother both used ringer washers. It wasn't until I was in high school that my mom bought her first washer that wasn't a ringer washer. I'm not sure if the rollers on your shucker came from a washer because the rollers that were on my mom's were much larger in circumference than those on your machine, but then who knows maybe there were many different sizes. Until next time. Thanks for sharing

😊that pea sheller Is worth its weight in gold. My fondest memories were with my great grandmother and aunts and sister sitting on the big front porch shelling peas and snapping beans all day long. There was nothing better than those pink purple hulls, which we also called field peas, and cornbread. I was born in Panama City and my great grandmother lived in Graceville-Chipley area. That soil produced the best peas. Butter beans and shucking corn was also a fun chore. They grew peanuts and we would boil them in those huge cast iron kettles all day. I’m 73 now and how I wish I could have one more day on that porch shelling with them and cooking those peas. Your Texas friend

We have grown these same peas and shelled them by hand, a few years ago when we had our farm. I guess folks who have done that for decades can shell faster than us, but I reckon that first quantity you showed us would have taken us a lot longer than 1 hour to do. What a fantastic, simple, ingenious design. I will say that folks at the farmers' markets were thrilled to get these peas from us, even when they had to shell them themselves. They are a treasured tradition in the South.

I’m sure they all were dancing a jig over that pea sheller…but I have very fond memories of all the ladies & kids in our small street gatherings under trees and hand shelling pea’s, butter bean and shucking corn. And all the sweet ice tea you could drink…I miss living in Sweet Home Alabama. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️🇺🇸🇺🇸

You guys have thousands of the pink eyed, purple hulled beans. Wow. And I don't think I have ever eaten one. That machine makes quick work of shucking. Good job. 💞💞💞

Going on your website today and ordering two bags of coffee! Take care in that heat, take plenty of water and shade breaks, and pace the fence building. No need to risk heat stress. Your family and ability to take care of your farm for the long haul is way more important.

Your Grandad is a genius to come up with this Pea Shelling Machine. Thank you for sharing the story and history about the machine. That is so cool that you can still use this machine from over 80-years ago. The new addition of chicks are so adorable. Both you and Brooke are such hard workers, especially with this crazy heat weather. Freeze dried peas - oh yes! Such a beautiful bountiful harvest! Have a blessed day!

It's so awesome that you have your granddaddies huller.
That is so much better then having any new machine that might be on the market.
    What a blessing.

Thank you so much for this video. It’s just amazing, never seen anything like it. I ‘m sure you will be selling peas at your produce stand. Wish I was there to buy some. Now you can go back to fencing, God bless ❤

Jason.. I really don't know how you guys do it all. The heat, all the projects, taking care of all the Babies... not to mention all the You Tube chores that keep us all connected.
PLEASE Please do take care of yourselves. You're the FIRST Priority.
PS.. I've heard of those Island Piggies.. we would all like to go there for a few days. 😅
Hang In there.. cooler weather is coming. 🧊 ❤️

It always amazes me the way you guys walk in all the growth. I guess you don’t have a tick issue down there. If I did that up here in NY I’d be covered in ticks after a few steps. Love watching you and all you do.

I had a pea shelter like that! Wet the peas and they shell faster . I would buy 4-5 bushels of peas and shell them in 1 1/2 hours. Mine was much faster than that one. I passed it on to a farmer friend of mine. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did!

I love that old pea sheller that has been in your family for 80 years. It’s so much faster than doing it by hand. I just love watching you two doing your thing on the farm. Pretty amazing! Lester loves your coffee.
