The fishhook looking item that your mate found is called a fibula. It was used to hold cloaks or other parts of clothing securely as buttons were later development.

In 2005 we were out visiting my future wife's mother after surgery and her across the street neighbor came over with a week old kitten that had been left over night in their back yard. I took him. We named him Oliver, for Dickens' famous orphan. After he was all grown up, my future wife was eating green olives - something I don't like and would've never had in the house - she had some olive brine on her plate and Oliver came in and licked it up. He didn't like pickle juice, only olive. We joked he had been well named. Like some bottle babies, not getting all the good stuff from his mother's milk, we lost him at 11.

Sorry to hear of your loss, mate. I've always despised cats, but about 5 months ago, I was dumping some rubbish at my local dump, as I was about to drive off in my side mirror I see 6 little kittens chasing after me, my better nature got the better of me so I stopped, the poor little buggers were starving. Some bastard had just dumped them out there, I ended up finding them all homes bar one within a day, but ended up keeping one as no one would take her, she is now part of our family and I wouldn't have it any other way, her name is Shanty which I believe is an African word for dump. Sorry again for your loss.

@@zerocool7772 I lost him January 4th, 2017, 5 days after we lost then next to the last of the '4 of '04' Pong. That year we also lost Tony, my 'MyLot' cat, who I drove to San Antonio to get, hence his name Antonio, but called Tony. I lost 3 others, including the last of the '4 of '04' gang, Gizmo. I had a lot of cats from around that time since people seemed to think I would take in anybody... and they were pretty correct. In 2018 I lost 3 more, and 3 more in 2019, 2020 and 2021. At that point I was down to 7 cats. I lost the next oldest cat last year, but he was the only one I lost. I was down to 6 cats for 7 months, but brought in a stray in May. However, the oldest cat is also my last feral inside cat and I'm not sure how much longer she will be with us.

It's interesting that you always find thimbles out in these farm fields - I was reading Thomas Hardy's 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' recently, and he wrote about hay making time on English farms, where the entire village would come together to bring in the harvest, and make hay from the stubble. He wrote how all the women and girls - even when they were taking a short lunch break in the fields - were always knitting or sewing, mending holes in their family's socks, etc - the exhausted men would just collapse in the hay for half an hour, and gulp down their lunch of bread, cheese and cider, but the women's hands were always busy and never idle! I can just imagine how their thimbles were always falling out of their pockets, as they put their mending away, got back on their aching feet and got on with the harvesting - it was endless hard work for these Victorian poor - especially the women!

I live in France and, unfortunately by the 16th century smaller hammered coins were all copper. So obviously don't last in the ground that well, being thin and all. Similar to rose farthings etc but there are dozens in each field. I have found the best way to clean them is to keep water off them all together (no squirting even.) Avoid rubbing with the 'thumb of doom' and take home and dry them out completely. Then I put a good coating of renaissance wax over them and 'push' the earth off them. keep adding wax as needed. Until the surface is revealed. Then buff. That way any patina stays complete and you don't end up degrading any detail.

The button is of the 96th regiment of foot 1780-1877, Prior to 1800, three unconnected Foot Regiments bore the identification number of 96th Foot. The first regiment was raised in c1760 and disbanded in 1763. A second regiment, the 96th (British Musketeers) Regiment, was raised in 1780 under Colonel Richard Whyte and disbanded in 1783. A third regiment, the 96th (The Queen's Royal Irish) Regiment was formed in 1793 and dispersed in 1798.
In 1802, a new 96th Foot was formed from the 2nd Battalion 52nd Foot. In 1816 this regiment was renumbered the 95th Foot (thus replacing the existing 95th Foot which became styled the Rifle Brigade).
In 1816 when the existing 96th Regiment of Foot was renumbered 95th Foot, the 97th Regiment of Foot was renumbered 96th Foot before being disbanded in 1818.
In 1824, another 96th Regiment of Foot was formed and continued until 1881 when this regiment was linked to the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot to form The Manchester Regiment.

Who knew something 800+ years old could have so much detail and look so beautiful. Awaiting the next adventure. Fantastic video Si! Oh, I almost forgot. My sister has a cat that loved Ramen noodles. He didn't care what flavor. He would beg almost like a dog if anyone was eating ramen. He wouldn't eat any other kind of noodles only ramen. He was a grey tabby and blue point siamese mix. His eyes never crossed and he had the attitude of the tabby, but the yowl of the siamese. We lost him in '81. Unfortunately he developed a taste for the Mt. St. Helen's ash after the eruption in 1980 and it caused kidney and urinary tract problem. Silly cat 😢.

What an awesome video! Your editing skills are through the roof!!! I do have one cat with odd behavior. He follows me into the bathroom and sits on the sink waiting for me to start the water. Then I have to fill the basin so he can enjoy fresh water! LOL It cracks me up every time. I learned so much about the variety of coins to be found. I loved seeing all your friends get together and having fun! I can imagine the square-headed find to be a key of some sort. Or maybe an early sort of wrench? It's so interesting to think of what people used in the past as they lived and used these items. Thank you for another wonderful entertaining video! 🥰

What a fab bunch of finds and a great couple of days you all had. A very busy field. It always makes me wonder what action a now fairly quiet, agricultural field has had, over the millennia. Fine ferreting boys!

I had a siamese who would ignore Catnip but would go nutty over celery. She would run to the fridge when she knew some was there and raided the grocery bag when we had celery in it. It actually made her "drunk," just like catnip.😺

    • @Sifinds

Good stuff. Have you got any land? As in permission to metal detect?

  • @SnowPink90

😂😂You're hilarious!! You get a silver coin 3rd try and that poor chap hung his head for an hour. So he couldn't find anything because of his metal detector not working properly? That's too bad. You wonder how many things he could've found if it had been working. I love your three second tent.⛺️ I remember my mom and dad having a two room tent, and how long it took us to put it up. It was hilarious. Dad, being Scottish he did not have the temper for putting up a tent so he sent them on his way to sit in the sun while we did it. Great memories.
You did great!! 💰 Thx for another great video!!😁

That”fishing hook” looks like a bracelet, it’s been bent, the hook would have hooked to the loop on the other side. You can actually see where it was twisted as it was bent. Just an idea.

That item with the square hole on it is a Handle “key”. The square part fits over a bolt (usually on a plumbing fixture) and you turn it on/off to allow liquid to flow or turn off thru piping
