    I'm a student at UBC majoring in CS and this gives me a very authentic insight into what my life in the future could be like and honestly does not look that bad. The work life balance seems to be very fair and you seem to spend a good amount of time with your kids. What position are you in and how long have you been working here?

    I lived in Vancouver my whole life... and I'm a little bit of the opposite.. I travel to Richmond via car... haha oh man, that train ride on the skytrain gives me a headache seeing it...I took a bus every day for 10 years at 2 schools... your schedule seems super tight...

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I personally enjoy the walk to the SkyTrain and the ride, but I've always thought "big city" life was fun. I don't like taking the bus though tbh. I am not sure if you mean "tight" like as in cool, or as in short on time. For time, I don't really have a schedule (besides meetings), so I come to work whenever, sometimes that means I get in at 9, other times 10:30, nobody is keeping track of times at my work so it's up to us to manage our time. I lived in Vancouver from 2015-2020 before I moved to Richmond, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, I lived in Yaletown.

      Besides me and a co-worker, almost nobody comes in to our area of the office. In the entire building, only about 10-20% of it is occupied on most days. That is the post-Covid WFH world.

      @@DustinBrettWhy do you go into the office?

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LookingAway359 Quite a few reasons, I like the exercise of walking, meeting and talking with coworkers in person & after 3+ years I am tired of work from home. Some of my coworkers never come in, but I find career wise that I am more engaged when I come in and that I know more of what is going on. Video calls and chats can't replace in-person for me & productivity is more than how many lines of code I write or how quickly I finished my tasks, I need to be exposed to new ideas and having conversations with people.

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for checking out my video! Vancouver is a great place in my opinion. I think in theory you don't really need any experience, but the challenges are getting the interview, and passing the interview(s). For me I had a lifetime of experience messing around with computers, and a few years working at very small companies around Vancouver. But I spent a lot of time finding the opportunities to get noticed by Microsoft enough to get the interview, and I didn't pass my first time I tried. I was persistent and I kept study and working with code, and on the 2nd time interviewing I was able to get in. Never giving up and focusing on wanting to understand coding are what I attribute to getting in.

    It's just amazing watching you! I wanted to ask you if you didn't go to college how did you got jobs? And what you as a software engineer think of this whole 'Ai is gonna eat jobs' stuff which is going on. I'm asking this because I'm 18 and this year I'm going to university (college). My priorities are computer science CS and AI, so I'll get graduated in 2028. Answer keeping the future in mind. Thanks

    • @DustinBrett
      @DustinBrett  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks very much!
      I got jobs by getting my foot in the door while also starting from the "bottom". I found my first programming job through Craigslist when I moved to Vancouver. It requires a hustle attitude along with making your own opportunities when you don't have a degree to lean on.
      As for the AI concern, I think it won't eat our jobs for a very long time, but it also depends if your job is doing something that is on the edge of what is possible to automate or not. AI at the moment does not produce very good code and it makes up things all the time. It works ok in demos and for Todo style apps or code snippets, but when you have big apps that are common within companies, we still have a long way to go, maybe decades. But if you love the work than you will embrace AI as a tool to make you better and more productive, so either way it isn't close to replacing what a good & passionate software engineer can do.
      I think if you are going to go to school to learn something, it should be because you have a passion for the topic and want to build a career around it so you can do what you love and be proficient at it. I don't recommend studying something because you think it will make good money or that the jobs are there, because even if that is true, you should focus your life on doing what you love. I agree with the phrase, "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

      I don't have any coaching services, but that is a neat idea, maybe one day.
      As for advice on managing my daily routine and balancing my work and personal life, I don't have a ton of advice beyond my last comment. For me work and my personal life are one in the same and I am always juggling between them. My best advice for work is to find something you love doing and then you'll never "work" a day in your life. I don't have that perfectly implemented yet, but I do feel like I am on the right track. You need to follow the things in life that you find important and don't chase the priorities that other people tell you are important.

    LOL that is an awful job!
    at least my job i get to travel around ride ATV/UTV snowmobiles and get to explore new lands i have never been on!
    lol when i did live in the city i loved constructing the prisons you all find yourselves trapped working in
    i like having jobs on the outside of boxes not in the center of them

      I enjoy my job and the office quite a bit. I've never felt like I was in a box/prison. I've travelled around the world and I am happy here where I am. Also have no desire to do anything with ATV/Snowmobiles, but if that is your thing, go for it.

    shows up at 10, works for an hour and a half. takes an hour and a half break, leaves at 4. this is why tech layoffs are happening.

      Haha, it is indeed true that we aren't punching clocks at my office, but the work is getting done also. I also work during my commute from 9:30-10 & 4-4:30, and I don't always take 90 minute breaks, it's usually under 60 but it depends on the day.

      Tell me you don't understand development without telling me.
