Awesome list, speaking of wordy, my take. Anatomy of song - when silence speaks We have thoughts constantly within our conscience, non-verbals become the pseudo conversations within our minds. The "should haves'" of yesterdays, the "to do's" of today's and the longings and intentions of tomorrow's. On top of that, interruptions occur, manifestations unbeknownst to be of fortune to tribulations become tempered by time and repetition, translations from unspoken. How many conversations with self do we have on the daily, on an ongoing basis, that are never heard? Take yourself back to the years the lyrics were crafted, 1963ishy, think cultural, think political, musical, technological. Grab a pen, a pencil, a notepad, assume your age as 20ishy in 1964. A perspective of youth looking forward in anticipation of success with a foreboding of apprehension to the unknown journey not yet taken. I've watched several interviews of Paul Simon and many other lyricists trying to explain their mindset to their creations. More often than not, they don't know exactly how it came to be, it just came, case in point included. From my understanding, part of the process happened in the darkness of a tiled bathroom for acoustics in his parents house, something happened somewhere between eureka and wa-la, a song appears. Again pretend you are 20ishy, rock and roll was not more than a decade old, televisions were still black and white, phones were still connected to the house. The everpresent unrest of society, Vietnam War, assassination of jfk, back to the days of self transported in history in time. Find a video recording of a young Simon & Garfunkel and ingest it all as not only the artists themselves, as a society that use to be back in the day, this song remains a snapshot of our collective history in progress. Flash forward to the now and the brilliance of a type of homeage, preformed by an unlikely ensemble (popularly understood to be heavy-metal no less). The advantage of knowing and experiencing 50+ years that have transpired since original penmanship. Your perspective is no longer 20ishy wet behind the ears, no longer a rookie of life, now the perspective changes to that of a senior, a mentor with wisdom and experience bringing it to the fore, you are now, a father of self. Simply listening to a reaction video of a live recording of it would leave the complexities undone, so many layers. The compilation of the original remake video by the band Disturbed , singer David Draiman (a trained cantor, yes, seriously) demands appreciation and attention. The cinematography, the black and white setting, the Vikingish creative license become an orchestra of gravitas, these words and instrumentations are nothing short of prophetic.Welcome to our living history defining words of imagination. We, the populace in the here and now have been endoctrinated into views of comparison as if everything is a sport, a competition, lessons are lost to ego. Think it through, would anyone compare, the nervousness of a first date at twenty to a celebration of fifty years? It is not only incomparable, it would be a sacrilege to consider. The lyrics came through a youth more than half a century ago, an unlikely artist resurrects it fifty plus year's later, it spreads virally, organically without intention remaining a mainstay several years to present. almost as if it needed to somehow marinate for our now. Sometimes when we least expect it, our silence is speaking and can be heard louder in the resess of thought more than anything audible. Being born in 1965 I somehow sense a kinship of a sort to this ironic not irony.
I was 60 when I first heard this track on local radio. There was always a radio on in the background, but I really did not take much notice of it, until my ears were suddenly awakened. I did not know what was happening at first, but could make out it came from the radio. I shushed everyone so I could hear properly. The hair on my neck stood up, and I was frozen to the spot, as this beautiful, beautiful voice filled the air. Pure and powerful. I like all music in general, but have never been struck by anything I would say I loved, Until this. I can say with all honesty, that this is the best version of this song I have ever heard, and so beautiful was it, that I felt I was being admonished by an Angel. Wonderful, thank you.
I remember watching them perform this on Conan when it first aired, and was SPEECHLESS…I didn’t usually even watch the musical acts at the end of late night shows, but as soon as it started I couldn’t believe what I was watching or hearing. You should DEFINITELY check out that version!
Yeah, this is one of those performances that comes around just a few times in one's life time. David managed to capture the emotion in the lyrics very good.
Great reaction! If you enjoyed the studio version, I would very much like to hear your reaction to their live performance of this song on Conan. Despite being ill that day, David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Paul Simon reached out to the group after the performance to congratulate them as he posted it on his social media, calling it the best cover of any of his songs ever. Conan celebrated the performance last year as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views. Keep up the great work!
I'm not a fan of cover version's or a fan of disturbed if I'm honest but my god this is the best cover of any original I'm ever heard. Ps my favourite song of all time is This boy by the beatles lennons voice is something else on that. Keep up the good work
Mr Draiman seems to look straight into your soul, when he opens his eyes on "When a vision ". In my opinion, this is simply a masterpiece, and one that keeps calling me back. Thank you for your music, Mr Draiman. 💕💕
Great reaction. Your facial expressions said it all. I think we all did the same the first time we heard this cover. David D has a captivating voice. The music is perfect and the black and white video is beautiful.
This is such an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!!
The beginning of the video is the title of the song. Simon and Garfunkel are an institution here in the US. This song describes the times in the 1960's.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Sam. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Enough", "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too. Umm, they are somewhat "heavier" than this song....LOL...
Paul Simon has actually said that he and Garfunkle's performance of this song (in the 60s) was a warning, and David Draiman's cover is an admonition for not heeding the warning. Seldom do you find a creator who appreciates a cover of their original piece so much that they put a link to it on their own social media.
i like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time. Notice the end of the video. Music sheets on one side and the boat full of instruments going to join them. Without each other you have silence. Such a powerful song and David is such a powerful singer. Classically trained, beautiful voice. Listen to some of his metal too, like Down with the Sickness, different side of David and his group (the guy with the guitar and the guy with the big drum) but just as wonderful as they are in this song.
Nice reaction. Check out something that is more typical Disturbed style. “The Night”, “Into the Fire”, “Stricken” are just a few of my favorites. David Draiman’s voice is amazing!
Sam, you just watched one of the best cover songs ever (I'm old so I can tell). If you want to react to another mega performance, try this one: th-cam.com/video/HASkxyAqq9U/w-d-xo.html by the group HEART "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" at the Kennedy Center in homage to LED ZEPPELIN
if you want to be really impress, react to Angelina Jordan I PUT A SPELL ON YOU (the studio version, 9 years old) th-cam.com/video/nwFloCPXzCs/w-d-xo.html you won't believe your ears and you will enjoy all her music for weeks to come. She is incredible.

Awesome list, speaking of wordy, my take.
Anatomy of song - when silence speaks
We have thoughts constantly within our conscience, non-verbals become the pseudo conversations within our minds.

You are correct, i felt it with this song, and i will still wait for the next one, fingers crossed aye.
The Best Cover & Best Voice Ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen brother
i like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time.
Did you miss that the sun broke through the clouds as the boat of instruments neared the people with the sheet music?
Rumour has it it that Paul Simon loves this version of his song too.
Falling in Reverse "I'm not a Vampire Revamped" is a FANTASTIC song if you loved this song!! Great Reaction!!
Nice reaction. Check out something that is more typical Disturbed style. “The Night”, “Into the Fire”, “Stricken” are just a few of my favorites. David Draiman’s voice is amazing!
Love the reaction video idea
Sam McKenzie that was my thought exactly too when I first heard disturbed's version of the song completely agreed my friend
Very good version
David Dramain is a classical trained vocalist
A Cantor.
Simon and Garfunkel tried to warn us......Disturbed chastised us for not listening.........
Where did you get the video without the TH-cam pop ups at the end?
Sam, you just watched one of the best cover songs ever (I'm old so I can tell).
