      I enjoy being legally blind! Yes, I definitely struggle on certain things. But I’m fine, just the way I am! With vision in my one eye. I’m glad to be part of the blind community! I’ve made some great friends who have similar experiences with their eye conditions. Even some people have the same one that I have!

      While it may sound fun, it's not all it's cracked up to be. I rely daily on my own service dog (medical alert and psychiatric) and while I wouldn't trade her for the world, if I could walk out of my house without worrying "do I have everything in case my dog gets sick, needs water, the pavement is hot or there's salt on the ground" it's also nice to have that independence. (I'm comfortable elaborating, you can ask if you want to know. ^^)

      I completely understand that! A lot of people with autism talk about how it can make them feel different, and how hard it can be. But at the same time, it’s still a part of them. Them being autistic makes them who they are In a way. And the same can go for blindness. Removing that disability would be like taking a part of them away.

    People who don’t have symptomatic vision problems don’t ever seem to realize how important it is to still get an annual eye exam. My last eye exam, the doctor found a retinal hole in my eye (that I’ve had none of the typical symptoms for, so I had no idea) that I have to get lasered shut or else I risk having a full retinal tear which could make me go blind in that eye. Vision care is important even if you think your eyes are fine!

      I have to get my glasses prescription updated every 6 months. I went a year and a half without going to an appt because the only dr in my area that accepted my insurance had to move home to Tawain for a family emergency and we couldn't find another one. When I did go to my new appt my glasses were pretty much useless due to how out of date they were and they found out that I have really bad astigmatism which I've never had before. So I completely agree with you. Vision care is so incredibly important and a lot of people don't realize it.

      Always had bad eye sight, needed glasses since childhood but never got myself educated that there could be eye diseases that regular glasses don't fix/help.Always thought that you had to have been born blind or have major injury to "loose your sight/not be able to fix it".

    Anyone else what to get rid of fake service animals? And what I mean by "fake service animals" is people with service animals that they don't actually need. It takes away of the reputation of service animals for people that actually do need them. Especially since 9/10 times the fake service animals look nothing like the real ones and people are starting to get the two confused. I hate how this happened. This bs needs to stop soon now.

      I agree that 'fake service dogs,' need to be stopped, but for different reasons. Of course, you shouldn't fake a service animal (cause it's hella illegal, ) but it's more harmful to people around them with or without a service animal when it's not trained. Either you get a professional to train it, or you self-train it. Because it's super harmful when people give off *WRONG* info about these animals, like how you need registration or an ID.
      ANYWAY, you were just at my Ted talk, good night folks.

      Sarah Camley Unfortunately, it has become a big trend to classify any sort of pet as a “” service animal” and try to get them access where a TRUE service animal (Guide dog for a blind person, etc. can go just so they don’t have to go without their yappy little “purse dog” for the 20 minutes they are in Starbucks drinking their costa-latte.

I judge a person by sight when I first see them, everyone does, it can't be helped (unless you are blind) but it's important to not "lock" that judgment. First impressions can be wrong, you need to be open to changing your mind about someone as you get more information about them.

    High Molly, as a fellow blind person myself, I pretty much agree with everything on your list of likes, but here's one that you might have forgotten if you like books? The fact that we have an entire library of free to read audio and braille books that's constantly being updated at our disposal. I'm a huge book worm, and as a college student who has to read a lot of material, the existence of this library has really come in handy more times than I can count. Another one of my likes is the fact that if I need it, I can ask an employee at my local grocery store to help me shop which makes things a lot faster easier and more enjoyable when I'm at the store, especially if I'm short on time, and have to buy a lot of things.

    I've worked in Opthalmology my entire adult life including many patients with RP. Many of my patients have extremely low vision or are legally blind with light perception like you. I cherish my interactions with these patients, they often have a great sense of humor and have realized what matters the most. Watching someone so young like you show the positives makes me so happy. I wish some of these patients could watch this when they gwt depressed. Miracles have happened. A man's optic nerve regenerated itself after 20 years of total blindness and had to cope again with that change, and we all don't know why this happened medically. I think that you have such a purpose driven life is beautiful and I can't wait to watch your journey I see you with kids I really do Molly..you'd be an incredible mama.

    Im soooo thankful for what I can see. I always knew that I would probably need glasses at one point because both sides of my family have glasses so that wasnt a surprise. But when I was very young in school we played some sort of hockey game with a ball and it hit me in the eye. My eye was bleeding yet I wasnt allowed to go home, they just made me sit in the office with an ice pack and paper towel on my eye. I was only like seven so I never told my parents because I figured why tell them if the school didnt, it’s obviously not important. A year later I noticed I couldnt see very well so I went to the eye doctor. They told me nothing was wrong and that I only wanted glasses because my friends had them (at that point I knew no one in the school who had glasses) so we went to five other eye doctors who never noticed anything. Fast forward to when I was 13 they FINALLY found something, my parents took me back in to an eye doctor because at this point no matter how close I sat to the white board I couldn’t see it unless I was literally right next to it. We found out that my retina is scarred and the scarred tissue just kept growing and growing. So not only was I near sighted in my left eye but I couldnt see out of the middle of my right eye at all. The place sent me to a specialist and thats when I really found out the problem, the eye doctor had just noticed something weird and couldnt quite figure out what it was. I just remember my parents crying. The specialist sent me to a different eye doctor two year later and that eye doctor said that my glasses prescription was way off, that my eyes got worse like anyones would but not that drastically so the first place couldnt have put the right prescription down. Now I have the right prescription and can see as good as I ever will, even if I have my bad days with either my eyes or my glasses. Im technically classified as legally blind but can still drive if I go through some other test and if my vision doesn’t get too much worse.
    The thought of driving absolutely terrifies me, I want to get my license for ‘just in case’ situations but theres bad days with my eyes where I can’t see most things and I can never see street signs until Im up close. So Ive been holding off on getting those.
    It scares me that I could not see one day if my vision continues to get worse. Especially because I love art, and it would be quite hard to do that without seeing. So all I can do is hope and pray that my eyes stay where they are and I will take any bad days with them that they throw me as long as I can still see to do the things I love. (Did I even word that correct? Ive got no idea this turned way to long, oops, I apologize 😂)

      That situation happens literally every single day in elementary schools, and honestly, it shouldn't happen. Schools don't inform parents if their child is hurt, unless *they think it's severe*- and, of course that's ridiculous, as your story proves, because they don't know what's really potentially serious. They need to be REQUIRED to tell parents about ANY injury a child might have at school. I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm also sorry for the first doctor being so incredibly dismissive and demeaning. These things shouldn't happen.

    • @beccab2151

    Speaking of Braille, do you think that you remember books better because it's kind of like muscle memory? Did you read books before you went blind? And if so, did you remember books pretty well then? I apologize if I overstepped a boundary, I'm just super curious how this might have changed as you got older and if it changed for the better even! Thanks for taking time, if you do read this. :)

    • @AyselGwynith
      @AyselGwynith 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would guess not, because it is not like your hand movement changes for each letter/word right? So there isn't really any special movement to remember? And even if that were the case, you would probably have to read the book many many times for muscle memory to kick in, as it requires a lot of repitition.

    • @LiveAccessible
      @LiveAccessible 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm low vision and I think it really depends on the person. Certain people can remember things better, regardless if it is print or braille. I tdon't think it really has to do with any muscle memory or anything. But that is an interesting though! :D

    • @ragecat.9521
      @ragecat.9521 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also! To add onto this, how do you picture the world when you read? Do you have any mental images in your head?

    • @LiveAccessible
      @LiveAccessible 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ragecat.9521 Honestly, I prefer to listen to things, but I can read braille if I wanted to. Imagine this... When you were a toddler, it's so hard to distinguish a between letters... And it's so difficult to start reading... But now you are older and it's very natural. You don't have to think about that the shape of the letter l is a straight line or an o is a circle. You immediately know that just by how much experience you have. It's very similar in braille. You read it and use it so much that it becomes second nature... You don't sit there and think about how the dots are configured,. Your brain just interprets it into words. Hope that helps. :)

      @ragecat.9521 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LiveAccessible that's super interesting, but I was actually referring to whether you picture the world around you as you read. Many sighted people can imagine what each character looks like, or what the world is like around the character, stuff like that. Does that happen with blind people too? Or would other factors come into account? Thank you for taking time to answer my questions, I'm learning a lot!!
