  • Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 11
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: • Online Learning During...
This video was shot in January, but I am just getting it up now! I thought it would be a good distraction video. Note the contact information below for ordering. I have used it multiple times and I LOVE it! It is compact, sturdy, and I have found no issues whatsoever! I would highly recommend.
The contact information for ordering the bat system is: Cheryl Belsey you can message on FB, or
email is ontariostpottery@gmail.com. The system comes with 1 Master bat and six, six inch inserts. Our price for the bat system is $80 and each additional insert is $3.50. Plus freight which so far everyone I have sent has been around $30. This is all Canadian dollar pricing

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my TH-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

I believe Matthew Kelly uses Batman products, and he usually allows his pots to dry on the bats until the pots pop off on their own accord when they are leather hard. I do know he uses a wood product bat system, and that he alternates which side he uses to prevent warping. Watching Matthew Kelly Pottery videos amazing. his ability to center and stay centered is remarkable.

Ranae- I enjoy Matthew too! :) Yes, I could leave my pots on longer to release from the wood, but I really wanted to remove them at that earlier stage of leatherhard- so I wired them!

Thanks for your video Karen. I agree, Matt Kelly leaves them on until they release naturally, and they will release. Also Jessica Putnam Phillips recommends leaving an insert in the large bat when not in use. I will buy these when it is time to replace my existing bats.

Shimpo Aspire holes will probably have to be drilled into the inserts if they are large enough. The holder diameter will prevent it from fitting on the Aspire. The total system will not work on the Aspire.
Once we can go to Home Depot I will be making my own system for my Aspire and will just have to have patience until then.
I have found that my pots have released easily from my MDF bats by giving them that little extra time to dry. As Renae mentioned Matthew Kelly, he advocates finishing pot feet on the wheel so there is virtually no trimming involved. My last load that came out of the kiln yesterday speaks volumes of how well this worked. The MDF can leave a little fuzz if it is a wee bit aged......plastic works really well doing self release.
    Thanks again!

Yeah, Freddie- if I weren't wanting to trim feet on the cups, I wouldn't have bothered wiring them. I do about half my pieces with trimmed feet, the other half flat and I finish them when I throw. It depends on what I want with my forms! Those particular ones I wanted to trim! :). Cheers- stay healthy! :)

I like wiring off and trimming especially when doing sponge holders, however this fairly new discovery for me even after watching countless videos has me very excited. I can make any type off foot trimmer on my 3D printer and so I am having great fun combining the two hobbies.
This single fired pot came out of the kiln yesterday morning and I just smoothed the bottom a wee bit.. I may have taken the lines off from the plastic bat before firing. Something I hope to eliminate when I can get a sheet of 1/2" PVC and make custom bats for my much treasured wee Aspire. lh3.googleusercontent.com/Do7mv4EdhORjKKhyPQdvPcVDAL_xooTREILOgsPWWzbQv6vT882kFDSR8Mt5xdrSIhqRPL4xQ7vkSQvVLLaxbBiMy44mdqr-S807d_yxqh-Wj9o9GH97VPqeOp7tOzvgYBjMv5WQ95ymjBxhZOZAvHtqkYcEVuw9t6rXUwZ_VK8eDGOarSXcVVfDJyg3kZV5q9ZhFxhpWwxQvGRSV88Lrf5f5CiALk_RTpUBeHrcsVn5Xli7Z_c5A3A0n3PmuUf_zOmxY74djPqDGCLTMYyIa0s-84jrur6ePljK_0h046PwKI-XNVEj2AZCKKDBLVF44-e_rxP1tF-4y65GuEYRI5Yd10Rwz7fOf9k7-r0p7vrCmXc7Jk5L4cFy8ilkHDxmDGUkJZurPo9Z_cL20Y284EHV0i3QJ9dRqAu_ffFU-TQylpTobS9ktsSsBnUCH_hASPUzLGVkUcFORMj5DIFaZn02X9eQ6ThvZ6kWJr3zZ1mTYTJj7VFfMgMgNv7D_eRZvfDqi-lmdt1iCpo1LhJkB1twvTHGSZBHIExnvh5fan3snunVdQOtleJ9EfRoB5mF0CtFj_jjpOVpst_ts3dNq4f74bU_j2LAwGx2WFjkWHJ6v5vZwyIAoknZZl_hAXr9CCV0Pm4onlfEPDu8lYE3Bqk5Ifh8IIHY0VbaBFqFhgovt-WCkdi02WkQPqu7y3Y=w1122-h842-no I need to learn more about sending pictures that are a reasonable size.

    Karan,
There is an almost identical system called WonderBats by Rocky Mountain Wood Masters. It is also made of some sort of wood composite material. The main complaint people have about that system is that both the adapter and the inserts absorb enough water that the inserts no longer fit. I bought the system (for $35, Amazon; and an addt'l 6 inserts from my local supplier for $12) knowing this could be an issue, which it did turn out to be. The solution? Slightly sand the sides of the inserts so that they fit again (although, admittedly, this was not completely foolproof.) Anyway, I am curious to know if the bat system you demo'd here did the same thing. Perhaps this is why the second bat fit more snugly than the first?
Also, all of the WonderBat products, made of the same material, are advertised to release a vessel when dried to leather hard with no need to wire off after throwing. As you seem to have experienced, this did not work for me either; pots not wired off cracked at the base.
I'd be interested to know any further thoughts and impressions you have.
    Thanks!!

Hi Linden! I have used the system several times since I shot the video, and I do really prefer wiring the bottoms. I am a trimmer at heart... I love trimming the feet- and wiring it allows me to get them off the bats sooner then if I allowed them to dry more. As far as the inserts fitting- I have had no issue- just the one bat was a little looser initially on that first use- but with the bat mate it solved any wiggle I had. I wash (wipe) them thoroughly when I am done with them and stack them on edge to really dry out. No issues! Thanks for your comments! Stay healthy! Cheers!

You’ve mentioned a few times that you don’t do sanding. I’m trying to eliminate sanding also. I wondered if you could elaborate on that. Perhaps you’ve come up with some helpful methods. Also, I’m a self taught potter and your videos are always one of my first choices. You’re an excellent teacher. Thank you.

Did putting that cloth under the bat help stop that little shimmy you described on the first mug? thanks for sharing...

Hi, I was wondering if you had an update on this system, like are the inserts still wobble free? Are they used by beginners that typically overdo the water of experienced potters? Any issues with clay collecting in the holes?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This system has been really excellent. I am cautious about cleaning it after use, and making sure that each insert has the ability to dry out before they get stacked. I haven't noticed much in the way of difficulty in the inserts fitting, as I have seen with other systems occasionally. I've not had issue with the material swelling. Clay does collect in the holes, but when I remove the inserts, I just wipe out the holes as I go! :)

Hi. I recently bought this same bat system and I’ve used it 4 times. Now, the inserts are way too tight and I have to take the entire bay off the wheel in order to remove the insert with my thrown pot attached. Have you experienced this issue? I really want the system to work. I am careful to clean and dry the inserts and main bay and dry vertically.
I find your videos very helpful! Self taught beginner here!
    thank you!

The ones from Batman in Canada have been really good for me- a little tight, but I use a tool to pry them up.
