  • I can’t believe we risked our lives for this … no taco is worth your life, but we were determined to do everything possible to try carnitas in Quiroga, Michoacan! Quiroga is said to be the CARNITAS CAPITAL OF THE WORLD! One thing is for sure, you’ll find the best carnitas in the world in Michoacan, Mexico. We went to Quiroga for the carnitas, but we stayed for an unexpected party that was unlike anything else we’ve ever seen in Mexico. One of our favorite experiences in 2022 for sure.

    I'm an American citizen and married to a Mexican woman, in Morelia, Michoacan. I don't know about you "risking your lives" but after two years here, I've still NEVER been approached or victimized by ANY crime. I love my life in Mexico. Assimilation, and appreciation of the culture is key. Yes, the Carnitas are GREAT as well as all the amazing Mexican food. Excellent video...

      in retrospect, we know there was never any real danger, but in the moment of accepting an off-the-radar ride with a stranger, it did feel like a risk. We know Michoacan is more than just the negative sensationalized news media, but one should still take precautions in life because better safe than sorry, right? Although, we definitely didn't follow that rule in this case!

    You guys are completely underappreciated. From your video work (there is so much involved in that, and you do it right. Great awareness of lighting, etc) to your editing and voice overs, and your timing and storytelling is very high quality stuff. You may be on the verge of breaking out. So...I saw your video about evaluating your life path. You do what you gotta do. But your personal story--super unique as a couple raised in the Midwest going to your roots, and being bilingual--is compelling. I'm rooting for you because I know how hard you've worked (and likely taught yourself, and consistently improved). From a fellow Midwesterner (WI) to you: Thanks for this special look at Mexico through your eyes.

    One thing I notice about the places in Mexico that I've seen in these videos: people. People are everywhere. Families. Old. Young. Just people out living life. That is so cool.

    • @EatBailaTravel
      @EatBailaTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right?! We’ve noticed that too and that’s the kind of environment we feel more at home in. Even among our own families back in the US, people start to grow distant, don’t gather as much as they used to, while in Mexico gathering feels so effortless…

      @Eat Baila Travel Totally agree. I went to a funeral about a week or so ago and the preacher said that the only time people get together now is when there is a death. That we don't have family reunions like we used to. Your point is so...on point!

    That was a spectacular video! I feel all the things that you expressed about religion. (That is, there are aspects that have pushed me away from it) But in this setting and combined with indigenous tradition there's something about the love, sense of community, and respect that makes you feel like you're part of a greater whole. And the sheer pageantry of it all is awesome. Your video production quality is on point. I personally love nothing better than a good festival video.😍

    In the USA, Catholicism is a religion. In Mexico it is a culture. Remember a lot of the heros of the country were priests . Hidalgo for example. To this day a lot of the people fighting for the rights of the indigenous and fighting against cartel violence are Catholic priests. I agree with you 💯 but try to look at it through their eyes as well.

    • @EatBailaTravel
      @EatBailaTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes of course! That’s why travel is so important to us. It gives us the opportunity to see many sides of life and opens our eyes and minds rather than simply believing what we’re told. And you’re so right, Catholicism is so deeply embedded into Mexican culture, it’s definitely a part of who we are even though it’s not a central part of our identity nowadays. We’re so glad we got to experience this festival in Michoacán to see more of the good that comes from Catholicism when community is at the forefront ❤️

    I've done the same thing with drivers all over the world. Yeah, not the smartest thing, but generally you make a friend and get a phone number and can use that same driver off app. I've got this Canadian that lives in Hong Kong that we still chat on occasion. Every time I go there he picks me up from the airport for about half what Uber would charge
    I also finally broke down and did a patron for y'all. Have a merry Christmas.

    Chicago has some of the highest gun violence in the USA. Highland Park had a very bad mass shooting recently. People from Chicago go to michoacan and are scared of violence. 🙄🤔

      that's actually one of my pet peeves lol when people from Chicago talk about how much "more" dangerous it is in Michoacan... like um... no lol. In Chicago, you're more likely to be a random victim of a violent crime. In Michoacan, the randomness is much much less likely.

    As a part time Uber driver in the US, I can say that long rides are generally better than short ones, but when you go completely out of town you are faced with the probability that you will be going back to town empty. I don't think Uber really accounts for that.
    One thing that can help with a decision in this situation is to look at the number of rides the driver has given or the length of time he has been with Uber. That info is available in the app at least in the US.
    Another alternative would be to leave the ride on the app but promise a tip of 50 or 100 pesos.

    Damn, those carnitas looked nice and juicy! Looks like Michoacan has some very nice towns :) Man, I may have to go there next! There's a place in Queretaro named Boye that has some bomb barbacoa and pulque if you guys are ever around! Always be careful with taxis or ubers that seem fishy, I rode with a cab drive at the Airport in Mexico City that was not commissioned through the airport services and he charged me like more than double for a ride. This was over 20 years ago, I remember the guy paying a police officer a "cut" for watching his cab.

    I believe there is frequent local bus service from Morelia. You won’t find these buses advertised online. When I went to Pátzcuaro I asked my taxi driver and he dropped me off at a major bus stop on the side of the highway on the outskirts of Morelia. Not the main bus station, which is for the fancy long range buses. I know there are local buses that also go to/from Pátzcuaro, so it might be easier to bus to Pátzcuaro first, then explore around the lake. The local buses aren’t the most comfortable, but they are an experience! Uber in Mexico is always cheaper, more comfortable, and probably safer than taxis. When I was last in Morelia I was told that Uber didn’t operate there. My hosts recommended always using a telephone taxi rather than flagging down a random car.

    Think vitamin c in the limes helps synthesize a bio-molecule that breaks down fats for energy. The acidity also helps make the food go down lighter/less greasy. I know i can eat way more tacos if i get juicy. If I do it halfway through a meal i almost get an appetite second wind of sorts lol

    Las carnitas super deliciosas ahi en Quiroga (Tambien en Zamora y en la Piedad). Era una de mis paradas favoritas en mis viajes de Zamora a Morelia. No se ahora como este, pero hace como 25 anhos, muchos autobuses que viajaban de Zamora a Morelia y viceversa, hacian parada en Quiroga... Yo me bajaba ahi para comer algo mientras era hora del siguiente autobus. Claro que tambien habia autobuses que no haciand ninguna parada y esos eran mas rapidos para cuando no tenia tiempo. Por cierto, la mayoria de la gente de michoacan son buenas, calidas y amables pero es bueno no confiarse por que uno se puede topar con gente no tan buena.

    I am from El Salvador and was just there in March. There are so many off grid "uber drivers" bwcause they know they won't make as much $ if they sign up officially. That way theu can set their own rate and factor in if the ride will be worth their time. The drivers I had were trusted family friends though. I would NOT take a ride from a random off grid "uber driver".
