My suggestion would be to keep it simple. Whatever scope you have in your head for your game, cut it down by ten. If you think that's not enough, then build it and you will see that it takes more time than you thought. Then go from there.

Maaan I wish I saw this a couple years ago! Glad new devs early in their journey have it at least! Good luck with your project man✌

It's hirlarious when you talked about combat that you can add later and adjusting along the way. For my project, the combat is the majority of it. That's why I'm hilarious.

It does feel you arrive and talk about games and the games you are making. Stories always win the attention and are hard wired in humans. Just tell the stories and people will catch on. I don't make games, I have no idea how to make a game, but these videos are really interesting and come across as one guy who is documenting his process in game making. People love to see how the underdog gets to the top of the hill. The anime of Megalobox and the manga of Hajime no Ippo are very popular because of the story of the underdog getting to the top. Keep doing these videos, you never know where they can take you.

Hey, watching this vid from Bosnia. Keep up the good work. I plan on getting into indie game development in near future once I have some money banked up. It's good to hear what people struggle with, it gives me a heads up on what I can expect. :D

This series is honestly so damn fascinating, especially as a fellow game design student/junior dev.
I know it's probably not super high on your priority list for the MVP, but I can't help but think that having a more dynamic camera that's panned more toward the direction the player is currently facing would help a lot in making the game feel much less "stiff".
Also regarding 2d platforming mechanics, there's this video/playable essay that I found extremely helpful when developing my own. Highly recommended stuff:

For me, the best thing I started doing was making my own tools.
For an example; I've created a custom level editor in unity that saves and loads object states from a json file.
I did this, to mitigate loading screens and have it so the game will only need to load once.
Of course, this requires me to plan ahead and figure out how many objects and such I want in the game.
But, I think it will be worth it.
I also made a dope character controller for a 3D mario like game. Which I'm working on, on the side.
If I can give anyone a tip its; Make your own tools, and NEVER lose them. I came to the realization recently that I'm always starting over. Best to keep things that are important.

Hi good video. I would like to make a little suggestion: as you are focusing on a 2d game it may be more beneficial to look at games such as hollow knight & salt and sanctuary for inspiration as opposed to 3d games like dark souls as 2d changes things quite significantly. Another thing with looking at games like dark souls and Elden ring etc is that these games are made by pretty large development teams and to even come close to all the mechanics and even just design is asking a lot from a solo developer (massive time or financial commitment). I've been making a 2d shoot em' up game for nearly 3 years (supposedly a simple gateway game) and the amount of work from something which may seem like a simple inclusion can be immense.
I would advocate writing everything you need for your game because having an idea of how long things will take will help you to get a good overview of what to cut and what to keep based on how long you are prepared to develop the game for (although expect to at least double the development time). Having an itemised list doesn't necessarily lock you into design decisions as you can still remain flexible and make changes / cut things as you understand more as the development progresses. It really does make a huge difference knowing how much work is involved left in the project. Then you always have an exact idea of what you need to be doing each day and won't be sat around guessing what direction to take wasting valuable time. Taking the small amount of time to do this will save you many headaches down the line.
Another thing I would say is to watch a video about design pillars they can really help you decide what your game is and try to have an established art style early. I did not have an established style early and it is a real pain having to tie everything together at the end.
Anyways, I hope that is helpful and looking forward to hearing about your progression!
That boulder turning around like that has never happened to me before in Elden ring that was hilarious aha.

Game dev is hard, so don't forget to practice patience and self empathy.

Great video! Determining what a game is or wants to be when making it is always a struggle. I don't know if you came across it in your research but the MDA framework might help you solidify your ideas. Sticking to a certain feeling or theme helps guide me when I'm making a game.

I need to say that I laugh at the "let's make it smaller" with the "rogue-like" followed by our beloved meme (RIP), you just lacked the MMO part hahahaha
And no idea is out of scope (just the MMO part, that is ALWAYS out of scope), you just need will (not the smith, but sometimes some slap can put you back on the track too, so maybe).
Well, good luck and your idea look cool!

if you're broke boy like me get 2 50¢ notebooks, one to scribble down your notes & ideas as you think of them, another for when you reread those notes & pick out what you need from/organize them. i'm actually using a small notepad + a larger notebook for finalizing ideas & it works great!

Game mechanics in dark souls, he goes with rolling and back stabbing, lol, well ignore that... an important mechanism of Dark Souls games, is the camp fire and estus flask, witch define the health system, the level system, and give the player a starting point to return to their body from, another game mechanic better then rolling witch is not a game mechanic, sort of how jumping and walking arnt mechanisms of the game

i have exactly the same struggle that you have.
if you are doing platformer. my advise would be start out 2d at first... if you insist on 3d, then do it in toon art style. this will give you some leeway to be visually pleasing..... never do realistic 3d if you are not an artist or purchase asset......
for indie game, i found out that it is important to start out the game with a one sentense hook.
and that hook cannot be "oh i'll pull in element from game A and element from game B to get a hook of C". I tried this approach many times and failed many times...
what usually happened to me was that this sentense is too vague, and by the time i made a prototype out of it, it didn't give me the same excitement that i had in mind. The element C i made out would be like a pendulum swinging b/w A and B.
next time when you start a new project, watch out for sentense like this:
    "i'll make a (e.g. Zelda/WoW/DS/BDO/OW/Cyberpunk)-like game"
because the sentense is too vague. by the time you try making it, you will realize there are alot of details that tied to those established game that you feel like your project will take years to make...and just the prototype will take you around 3 months...that mainly consist of a bunch of bizzare looking placehoders that un-motivates you...
The correct way of thinking, should be some what like this:
"I like the dodge roll mechanics in Elden Ring, what twist can I put into it to make a fun game?" if you could come up with at least 3 answers to it, then thats the game worth making.
also, if you are planning on a commercial release of the game, i would recommend to stay away from platformer genre cuz its too saturated...but if you're just going for the expereience then go for it.
    anyway, you are not alone~
may god bless our game dev journey~
    KK
