- Yamato vs Bismarck, many of you asked for it. This highly anticipated naval duel is going to be intense. Japanese Yamato as the largest battleship has thick armor and massive cannons while its opponent German Bismarck is lighter but has state of the art technology onboard. Both are mega-ships are top tier and one of the best the world has seen. That said, this epic cinematic scenario shows you all the best moments from both perspectives.

This was the actual plan tho it went a bit south for the Kriegsmarine. The Bismarck draws out Yamato and while they are engaged in the gun duel the Submarines do the actual job of sinking the japanese Battleship. While the Bismarck was sunk (Wich is a little bit surprising, mainly cause the Bismarck had endured much worse punishment without being sunk) the Yamato is also done for now. And in the end it's a German victory, the objective was achieved.

The thing to keep in mind when comparing the Bismarck and Yamato is that the former was never designed with the intent that it would fight a peer warship. Kriegsmarine doctrine during WWII was to use its battleships as commerce raiders to choke out the British supply lines. This is part of the reason why Bismarck was such a feared ship: if it could roam the Atlantic unchecked, it would sink a large amount of materiel intended for Britain. While it's true the Bismarck was designed prior to the outbreak of WWII, by the time it was formally commissioned, Kriegsmarine doctrine had shifted towards considers for a war with the British. Yamato, by contrast, was built specifically with the idea that a single battleship could have superior firepower over any battleship of a potential adversary. While Bismarck had superior technology, if it had actually met Yamato, it's unlikely it would've stood much of a chance.

Thats the plan, but how do they actually live up to that?
On paper hms hood and prince of wales should've been enough to defeat Bismarck but in return they just took a massive blow, it goes without a doubt that Yamato had superior firepower and possibly armor.
However i don't think it wouldn't stand a single chance, from distance bismarck could ripple Yamato because of its accuracy, or have a lucky shot and detonate one of the turrets, or yamato could cripple Bismarck guns before the fight starts.
There are too many if, also don't forget that the british did not penetrate bismarck's hull despite all the shit they throw at it.

Yamato never actually scored a successful hit in her short career. Maybe during her trials and on paper, yes, but in reality, the Yamato was nearly as flawed as Bismarck. Aside from the Scharnhorst class, Germany had ZERO experience with battleship building since WWI, and the Bismarck wasn't as great as she could've been. Yamato's armor was also great, yes, and of course she had massive guns, but bigger is not always better. Like others have said before, Bismarck was more accurate, and even if Yama did hit Bismarck, it would take much more than one salvo to end her. Something everyone seems to forget is the fact that Bismarck would not be sitting still. Same with Yama, but she is a massive target that cant dodge for shit, while Bismarck could dodge most of what Yama throws at her.

The Japanese Empire had many ships that surpassed the Bismarck. In fact, the Bismarck was only a medium-sized ship compared to the size of the Imperial Japanese maritime industry.

@Meme Man If Iowa wanted, it could engage Yamato outside of Yamato's effective firing range and it could prevent Yamato from being able to close the distance and just keep dropping plunging 2700 pound shells on it all day.
Bismark isn't in the same class as Yamato or Iowa or Vanguard or South Dakota. Any of those ships would thrash it 9 times out of 10.
22steve5150 I don’t get why people think Bismarck is even remotely close to matching the firepower and protection of the Yamato and Iowa class. She’s at most on par with her contemporary designs like the littorios, Richelieus, and KGVs, and even then Bismarck’s design is much more inefficient then the contemporaries, with weaker guns than all except for the KGVs and literally had the worse armour scheme out of all.

Anyone who thought Bismarck vs Yamato was going to be a 'battle' was just deluded. Bismarck gained a fearsome reputation because it sank the flagship of the Royal British Fleet HMS Hood. But that was due mostly to Hood not really being equipped for a slugging match with a ship armed with the kind of guns Bismarck brought to the table. Bismarck herself was never designed to go toe-to-toe with other battleships. She was a long-range commerce raider.
The YAMATO on the other hand was designed to literally be able to take on three or four battleships SIMULTANEOUSLY. She had the guns, the armour and the speed to pose a serious threat to the flagship of any WW2 navy. In that light, this battle was a foregone conclusion. When Bismarck spotted the Yamato, they should have run.

It’s fascinating how Bismarck has only 4 double barrel guns as primary and Yamato has 3 triple barrel guns and both started sinking at same time
I feel like Yamato can win the victory since it has 3 barrels on each turret and other smaller guns.
@@scamhunter2346 Bismarck class also has secondary batteries, but in lesser numbers than Yamato class.
But I agree with this video - even though I am very interested in Japanese WWII ships and love developing paper models of those - Yamato may have great armor and the largest and most powerful main guns, but let's not forget that Bismarck's hit on Hood's magazines were absolutely not a fluke; her radar controlled main guns were very effective, comparable to the US ships' radar targeting, which was very accurate too.
Yamato could compensate in terms of whole salvos, and just this aspect put her on par with the German, American and English navies of the time.

Actually that hit on Hood WAS a fluke. NO SHIP EVER was so accurate that it could specifically try to shoot at a specific part of another ship.

Gunners/ fire control directors aren't just given instructions to hit anywhere on a ship, you ideally want to fire and hit on the most vulnerable part of a ship. A fluke would be blindly firing into a ship with little to no visibility with the intent of just hitting it anywhere. Were the chances of hitting that specific section extremely low? Yes. But saying it's a fluke it not giving any credit for the numerous calculations the fire control directors have to factor in before deciding on a firing solution.

You CAN’T specifically target the most vulnerable part of an enemy ship unless you’re at point-blank range. No fire control system offered THAT much accuracy or precision.
All those numerous calculations made by the FCS is JUST TO FIND WHERE THE ENEMY SHIP IS.

Don't think a cigarette can burn through the shell and ignite the explosives inside. Still smoking inside there is the most foolish thing you can do, as it can still set off the propellant charges while they are hoisted into the turret to prepare for loading

The Bismarck could fire once every 18 seconds, while the Yamato could only fire once every 45 seconds. The Bismarck had 31 knot speed while the Yamato had 28 knots. The Bismarck had better radar than Yamato, but the Yamato had almost 30,000 ton greater displacement. Who would actually win would be based on weather and a bit of luck on each side.
Bismarck’s armour layout was garbage, and realistically both sides wouldn’t be shooting more than one salvo per minute.
In daylight literally the only advantage Bismarck has is that Bismarck can run away. At night, the radar on the German ship could turn the tables….except Bismarck’s radar tended to break itself from the shockwave of the main guns being fired.

If you're bring up the KGV's radar/FCS, then you need to pick which year, because the KGV had equal and superior FCS and Radar equipment to both the Bismarck and Yamato.

In good visibility the gap between visual and optical fire control was actually much smaller than commonly assumed: even American radar fire control wasn’t able to hit reliably at 30,000+ yards (despite that being the plan for the Mark 8), and German radar fire control wasn’t as good as that of the Americans.

I think the reason why the Yamato won was simply because her bow or deck or hull was a lot wider than the Bismark so the weight was spread out more and she could stay afloat for longer

That was one hell of a battle. I was quite on edge and wished Bismarck won but... it didnt work. Great video.
Eh, the u-boat torps would have been more effective coming from the right of the yamato as opening a hole up on the other side would have created counter flooding to all the flooding on the right balancing out the ship. However shooting torps at the raised side may have allowed the torps to strike the citadel/magazine easier allowing for a one hit knockout. But causing more flooding in the right compartments may have fliped the ship so to speak leading to eventual sinking once the turrets fallout of the barbettes.

Warspite and Mikasa will be living legends for Battleships. Let's not forget Gangut. It may look like she didnt do much but it was her artillery fire that did keep the germans at bay in Leningrad. It's even impressive she keep fighting after being crippled by German bombs and survived the war

Yamato could fire from longer range than Bismarck, had bigger guns (18.1 in to 15 in), more main guns (9 to 8), and much thinker armor belt (410mm vs 320mm). In nearly every way she far outclassed Bismarck.

You still have to see your target with the curvature of the earth you prob can’t see more than 15 miles. Well within the range of withers big guns, unless you scout planes are airborne in a spotter role

Realistically two torpedoes aren’t enough to sink a battleship. It may be severely injured especially considering the Bismarck’s contribution but I think it could limp back to base. I know this is just a TH-cam video but I thought I might as well. Anyway nice video it was amazing!
@DOUG HEINS It took many more torpedoes to sink her. I agree concussive damages were poorly taken into account in japanese designs due to a lack of experience of battle damage whereas british (and therefore french and american) and german navies had plenty of experience with the WWI clashes in the northen sea but I don't think 380 mm hits could have seriously threatened the structural integrity of a yamato class to the point of making it vulnerable to 2 mere torpedoes. It has to be underlined Yamato torpedo protection was subpar and the december 1943 incident when the USS skate inflicted one torpedo hit on yamato showed the ship to be vulnerable yet that very torpedo hit was barely noticed and despite flooding several compartments barely threatened yamato buyoancy. Unless extremeley lucky, another torpedo would not change that imho.
