Both full of wisdom. I guess vertical landing can be quite challenging in strong wind conditions, a sharp cliff edge, plus uncontrolled vegetation made the rotor worse. Overall nice fly. Yes, you're right. But the start and landing area is not steep. The wind was slightly off, from the optimal wind direction and caused turbulence from bushes and small trees. The site really needs some growth trimming

...you did handle well until last second, when I think you went into a wind shadow. Hope you're OK and glider has no damages! Similar happened to me about a month ago, strong wind, mid day, and suddenly the wind disappeared with minimal ground speed.

In strong wind conditions, it is very useful to land a glider as far as possible away from the sharp cliff edge. 200-300 meters downwind from the sharp cliff edge - a minimum distance for comfort landing with the strong wind.
Thanks for your usefull input, but ufortuneately It wasn't possible to land with that kind of clearance. In hindsight I shouldn't have flown this site.
I see it. And when you have enough altitude, you can fly away downwind from the rotor. 2-3-4 thousand meters will be enough to escape the rotor. As for me, it's better to land at 400 meters away on the field rather than land in the bushes near the edge ;) But if you lose your altitude and have no chances of gaining it back, the rotor seems more dangerous than soft bushes.

I wouldn't fly that site again, unless the landing area would be cleared of bushes and small trees. In hindsight I shouldn't have flown that far behind the ridge, but stayed just behind the ridge and made a vertical landing.
Pretty predictable sort of landing given the terrain and conditions at the time. The wind strength and the amount of vegetation around was always going to throw up turbulence and a steep wind gradient close to the ground. Handled it pretty well I thought.

Thanks. Besides a few scratches from the landing in blackberry bushes, I was fine. I love my Flex 2 harness - It is very comfortable. Zippers is easy to use and there are pockets for everything. It's easy to pack all harness and glider bags in it, if you plan on flying cross country. I haven't tried other harnesses, so I can't compare it to another harness, but I'll recommend it anyway. From your video it looked like a lack of penetration/ in your inter mediate glider,,a little further forward and little sses ,to waste alt if necessary,(always better to overshoot and try again,,I notice all the ridge is sharp edges,(and no beach option),sharp edges ridges are real prone to nasty rotors a long way back,and get more vicious as the wind goes up,,, regards
You're right. I should have flown closer to the ridge in my approach. Didn't get the anticipated penetration and got stuck in rotor. The landing site is very narrow and is a nasty place to land. It really needs some vegetation trimming.

Strong days with a steep ridge face can often generate rotor turbulence. Landing well back from launch (if possible) can sometimes help.

And why you didn't land on the clear fields on that right of your lading point?

Nah, I'm okay. Bad landings happens once in a while ;) .. And now I know what to do next time I'm flying at this location.
I have not "hung glid" for 30 years, but I think the basic rule still applies: Don't land directly behind a square-faced cliff.
