Why We Need 3 Piston Rings | Compression, Oil Control, & Wiper Ring Differences Explained

  • A piston ring is a metallic split ring that is attached to the outer diameter of a piston in an internal combustion engine. They are typically positioned in grooves or slots on the piston itself. These rings serve as a sealing mechanism between the piston and the inner walls of the engine's cylinder.
    Piston rings ensure that the combustion chamber, where fuel and air ignite to produce power, remains sealed during the engine's operation. This seal prevents any gas from escaping or oil from entering where it shouldn't be. This sealing action is essential for engine efficiency and performance.
    Automotive piston engines typically have three rings per cylinder. The top two rings known as compression rings, are primarily for sealing the combustion chamber. The bottom ring known as the oil control ring, is primarily for controlling the supply of oil to the cylinder wall.

ABRAÇOS... there are mostly 2 ways of doing it.
      most typical is with 3 piston rings.
      Many of the service manuals on newer engines say to put all 3 ring gaps at 120degrees from eachother.
      and another way is to put the gaps on opposite side of eachother.
      i personally put the ring gaps at opposite of eachother.

      Use Top Engine Cleaner, I think it's AC Delco brand. Comes in a metal can. Honestly the rings might be too far gone, but worth a try. Regular oil changes and carbon cleaning are key. I had a 99 and it drank oil like water, I topped the oil at 1000 miles and at 2000 miles id change it. Those old accords just never quit. Thing ran and ran, I worked with a guy that had one he ran low on oil for two weeks, no knock topped it up and it kept rolling.

    The rings act as a seal between the combustion chamber and the crankcase. However I don't see how this can provide a good seal when there is a clearly a gap on each of the rings. Wouldn't the gasses pass through this gap and leak out?

    • @gaborkorthy8355
      @gaborkorthy8355 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      On assembly you stagger the ring gaps so they do not overlap to eliminate blowby.

    • @flutibg
      @flutibg 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The gap looks big when the piston is outside the cylinder, but when installed the ring is compressed and the gap becomes very small - about 0.25 to 0.50mm and it almost disappears when the engine gets hot. A little gas passes through the gap but the quantity is almost negligible.

    • @darrylleigh7514
      @darrylleigh7514 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's called ring in gap. If set properly and the 3 different rings staggered 120 degrees apart it will perform as designed with very minor compression loss or blow by. All internal combustion engines are designed and have been for decades to operate this way

      Good luck putting out those Lithium ion battery fires. Google "Dutch Oven", half a billion reasons why Lithium ion battery EVs will be the doom of humanity and planet earth. Don't get me wrong, EVs have huge potential, but that potential is impossible to realize with current battery tech. Until battery/super capacitor technology or some other electrical energy storage technology is good enough, EVs are worse than ICEs from an overall practical standpoint in every way.
