💬Plot summary:
Fan Xian grew up in a small town by the sea with his grandmother, following a sudden visit of a poison master, his peaceful life quickly morph into one filled with danger and hardship. He ends up on an adventure of marvelling the world, getting tangled in politics, finding true love, figuring out his purpose in life and secrets of his world.

Two years and numerous re-watches on, this remains my favourite seven minutes of TV ever. Zhang Ruoyun's delivery, the way the poem limericks time perfectly with the music as a playful battle song/ mock declaration of war, to the hilarious way the scene ends...just perfect. It pretty much consolidated Joy of Life as my favourite show ever.
Very much looking forward to JoL 2 and Sword Snow Stride...Wang Juan is a fantastic script writer.
Seen both and immensely enjoyed both dramas. They were both chefs kiss 😘 ❤❤❤. I love the balance between action, comedy, politics and romans. I saw ml taking pictures for season 2 so maybe they are filming by now at least 😭😭😭 I heard that it was difficult to get back many of the original cast because of clashing filming schedules. I don't mind as long as they keep the ml and introduce other seasoned actor's.

Have to say, Zhang Ruoyun is just the perfect male lead for this kind of lightly comedic, yet very plot heavy and emotional drama. He’s very charming and charismatic. His emotions and wits just flow very naturally. He gave a Spectacular delivery in this very challenging scene.

Zhang Ruoyun's performance here is absolutely credible. There seems to be no "cut" to his recitation and action during the whole spiel of the 100 poems. Everyone is in awe at his flawless delivery. Very well done. The performer and production crew deserves full credit.

Have watched this scene several times and I just love it. Zhang Ruoyun is amazing reciting all those beautiful poems. Brilliant. He does a fantastic job in this series. Can't wait for season 2. Hope it starts soon. But till then I can watch this series again and The Sky Palace too.... LOL

actually those poet are long been dead for millennia and Fan Xian actually living in the future, distant future after the Human civilisation collapse during the new Ice age and the new Human Civilisation devolved into feudalism
Knowing both languages, I think the amazing thing about Chinese poetry is that it’s relatively easy to achieve exactly the same amount of syllables in each phrase in perfect rhymes. And since each character can have multiple meanings under different contexts, it’s really quite astounding how much contents you can deliver with just 5 or 7 characters in each phrase. So the poems are super neat and usually have very deep reaching prospects. The beauty just cannot be translated.
Many English poetry cannot really be translated by Chinese as well, such as the most famous: “to be or not to be, that is the question” Chinese can only translate it into: “to live or to die that is the question” which is the same as how these Chinese poems are translated into English: you can get the essential meaning but not all of the layered meaning.
On the other hand Chinese poetry can be better translated into let’s say Vietnamese or Korean. It’s all about language similarities.
中国古代的文学，千万不能翻译，绝对不要看翻译版，这是对艺术的侮辱！翻译后的文学价值为0，跟这些经典作品毫无关系了！

Like the brilliance, epic-ness, and irony of this scene is immeasurable. Usually those with memories or coming from the future or anything of that sort - would do whatever they can not to influence the present with that knowledge that they possess.. But this is a beautifully done scene of satire and spoof that combines both culture and knowledge [of Chinese poems] that goes against the idea of "not using future knowledge to influence the past/present"..Like the character's existence itself [in whatever time period they are in] had not already influence the time and changed the future /sarcasm/...
From what I understood (spoilers)
From the mom’s letter to Fan Xian, the time that Fan Xian is in is actually in the future. His mom woke up from cryogenic sleep and discovered that another ice age had passed and with its passing, all modern technology became obsolete and civilization sort of started from the beginning again. Elements of Ancient China was preserved and used by others who like Fan Xian’s mom had woken up from cryo sleep and saved the civilization that had survived the Ice Age. Fan Xian has memories of modern society because of a certain method of which he was the only success. With this reasoning, the common cliche of the past influencing the future doesn’t apply anymore since Fan Xian’s time is actually the future after modern society fell during an ice age. Pretty novel plot twist.
actually, Fan Xian have the memory of the past, that's why when he mention historical figure of his past or the past Imperial Dynasties of his past, no-one seem to understand or had clue of what is he talking about.
@@imdreamingofawhite here is a scenario that some people decided to not cryosleep but instead decided to leaves the planet and colonised distance world such as Alpha Centauri, and our Human civilisation prospered and evolved on the new homeworld while the human survivors of earth devolved into the primitive states.

I can't remember 1 poem let alone 100! Zhang Ruo Yu did an amazing job reciting all those poems in his drunken state..lolol! Loved how he destroyed the Princess Royal's scheme in the scene!

When Li Bai was drunk, he made a bet with his boss that if he wrote a hundred poems at a time, he would be able to avoid drinking money. As a result, Li Bai really wrote it. 这就像翻译中文诗一样，英文当然可以达到大概意思，但不能达到完全深意。一样的道理。
