You might take away from my intro that yu-gi-oh is on the decline or something. It's not at all lmao. Because of Masterduel it's getting a boom in interest again. Masterduel has over 20000 people playing on a daily basis on steam alone! Tournaments are consistently big too. With interest booming that means that speed duels can get a surge in play if Konami doesn't drop the ball. They probably will but a man can hope. I'm mostly speaking on the perspective of being burnt out on it from time to time. Would be nice to have some version of Edison format on Masterduel or something. I also just feel it probably should have been bigger by now if they managed the property beyond just the card game for years on end and treated it better. This video has been in the making for a while and I couldn't just rerecord the intro so might as well make myself clear here. Thank you for watching!

Speed Duels is, in fact, doing pretty all right. Now if we could have a proper, actually official banlist, instead of... whatever that event list is, that would be nice Konami.

    • @gameboylad
      @gameboylad  ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@hawkticus_duel_shack That's kind of always been the problem with yugioh. We are at the mercy of one of the shittiest gaming companies to do something competent. I love speed duels but the start was rough and we have no idea how often they will roll out product for it and how long they'll support it. If we were more like the FGC and not so reliant on the company, I'd have more hope for people being invested in other formats of YGO.

    • @hawkticus_duel_shack
      @hawkticus_duel_shack ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@gameboylad Well, we just got Midterm Paradox and March is the release of the Shadow Riders box, so things are actually looking good for our continued support. Plus all the side events at the YCSs have been sold out for it, so they are aware that there's a player base.
Konami is dumb but they do tend to like money, hopefully that's enough motivation.

There's another channel that is going through each of the games and they completely wrote off Reshef, which is surprising because they managed through several of the Japanese only early Duel Monsters games. Early last year I also took the monumental task of beating Reshef, what a game! It has so much... right, but it also does too much wrong to be accessible. It feels like a romhack, in the best possible way. "Oh! You thought Sacred Cards was too easy, huh?! Well, how about this!"
You provided incredible commentary on each of the decks, showed your appreciation for the ideas the game had to offer, presented each of the challenges and portrayed a flawed game with a lot of subtle care put into it. One thing I loved about this review is how it came full circle. Early you mentioned about how the Maiden may potentially be useful and then during the very final boss gauntlet you are able to utilize this 0/100 no effect monster to incredible... well... effect.
Wonderful work. I think there is still a market for games like this in this style, seeing some really interesting effects on normal monsters is part of the reason why I love these early games, the possibilities were there for this to go somewhere great, but it seems like they stopped here, unfortunately.

This is not the only YuGiOh game that is a sequel with re-used assets that has slowed down games. When the DS World Championship games went from 2009 to 2010, the AI became much more slow as it had to calculate a lot more options from a higher card count in the game whenever it was their turn, especially if they are doing something important in Main Phase 2.
They fixed this in 2011-Over the Nexus! It was quicker than 2009, but didn't have the monsters materializing from the cards like in 2009.

    • @wilkobadberg5272

A couple of fun little tidbits:
You can walk past most of those pickle duelists in the dungeon, pretty sure that wasn't intentional
DO NOT discard slifer against endgame opponents. I've lost games because I discarded him to save time and they threw out monster reborn...mfers
The AI is actually really predictable when it comes to who they choose to attack. Also if you get castle of dark illusions and a high-attack beater then congrats, you've almost certainly won. They'll never remember what the card was and they'll just keep swinging at it and losing monsters/LP

    - grind Joey for coverage, bait him to EATGABOON his Light Warrior
    - then grind Duke for Hourglass
    - THEN YOU GRIND YUGI FOR MONEY!
-You could grind for Mask of Darkness since it is 900 ATK then grind Duke for Hourglass and more EATGABOON and Beckon.
    - Buy as many traps and bear traps and other beginners and low cost spells and your mostly safe.

Seriously, grind Tristan for WIND MONSTERS JUST TO GRIND JOEY!
HE DROPS VARIOUS 1000 DEF MONSTERS THAT ARE COSTLESS! EVEN FLAME SWRDSMAN IS COSTLESS TO IS BETTER THAN ANY 1 TRIBUTE YOU HAVE IN YOUR DECK! ALSO, HIS SALAMADER EQUIP CARD IS NOT THAT GREAT BUT HAVING SPEELS THIS ARLIER IS AMAZING! JUST BCZ YOU CANT DO MUCH AGAINST REBECCA AT THIS POINT!
HAVING MASK OF DARKNESS IS GREAT FOR PANIK! 900ATK THAT BOOST AT YAMI IS AMAZING! AND IF YOU CAN PASSWORD THE RITUAL SUMMON THAT IS EVEN BETTER! SINCE THE CARD MAY STILL BE AT THE BOARD TO SUMMON THE DIVIN MONSTER!
But the best strat is to buy AS MANY TRAP CARDS AS POSSIBLE! PASSWORD BEAR TRAP AND INVISIBLE WIRE IF THE RNG DROP ISNT AT YOUR SIDE! As it was in my case in my current run....
In my forst run I got so lucky... just around 10 duels I got 3 hourglass and 5 duels I got Time Wizard and many 1000 Def monsters from Joey.

@@sirwolfy9372 theres an easier way to do the early game grind really. do low level antes so infinite dismissal and eatgaboon can be dropped, after just a few of either, a slight tweak of your deck with the starting cards makes rebecca easy to beat. then go to the novice machine until you get 3 bear traps from it, then the game up until canada becomes easy grinding only the npcs or tristan potentially very short if rng is on yourside for drops. on a side note, nearly all ritual monsters were removed, so no using mask of darkness for a ritual sadly.

My family actually got the Sacred Cards Reshef bundle when I was a kid. I loved playing through Sacred Cards, but man Reshef kicked me and my younger brother in the teeth repeatedly. There were tons of times that we basically had to save scum until we just got lucky on the boss characters because it never occured to us to grind. We never made it past Odion and Marik because their cards were just too strong. I doubt we could have ever done those castle boss rushes, even if we put in the time to grind

Only problem is because of the game was programmed or whatever, many cards in over the nexus don't function the way they shouldn't, fusions are broken since you need to actually have the monsters on the field which breaks the flow, they work fine if you use the special fusion cards but normal poly does not work properly.

This vid actually got me to start playing Reshef and goddamn you were not lying about how brutal this game is. One thing that's been very helpful while playing that you didn't really mention was the Duel Machine in KaibaCorp. The Expert duel gives ~1k+ cash per win, and often gives super valuable cards that can be used either as ante fodder or just to sell. It's super difficult, legitimately the only monster in its deck below 1900 attack is Castle of Dark Illusions, which has a massive booty and sets Yami. However, a majority of its deck is Dark, with just Vorse Raider and Gemini Elf as Fiend and Light respectively, so with some good RNG you can beat it and get loads more money than you would grinding Yugi or Mako. The game's been pretty fun so far, even with the shop adamantly refusing to sell stuff like Dark Flare Knight, Doron, Trap Master, or Amazoness Archers. Thanks for getting me to try it out and great video!

    • @gameboylad

I'm not gonna lie, I completely forgot about the AI. I dueled the expert twice. Once in the beginning and I got fucked up so I wrote it off. The second time was near the end and I demolished it. I wish I had that in the grind rotation as well lol

This is the most comprehensive guide vid I've seen for Reshef, and the game deserves it. Only thing I'd add is the dudes at around 1:44:00 are the best place to grind. Quick duels with a decent chance for those valuable ritual monsters, as well as the bonus extra cards for each duel.
Otherwise, GG on stopping Reshef from taking over the world, and good luck in the Hall ;)

EDIT: 1:12:10 - Nevermind, that defeats my whole idea.
Also, as for why the Big 5 are in this game, this game seems to be pulling a Sailor Moon: Another Story and doing an anime-manga continuity mash-up for its own canon. Plus the game is a sequel to The Sacred Cards, which skipped over the Virtual Nightmare fillers altogether. So either they only suffered the original Virtual World arc from the anime but somehow got free, or these are their manga selves and they (or rather Kaiba himself) never bothered with the VR gaming nonsense altogether. I’m leaning towards the former since it would justify how they’re able to duel in this game.
Jury is out on how or why Noah is in the Hall of Eternity despite this though.

And consider this, I'm actually trying my best to keep out of youtube because it's eating my day away, but my goodness you might as well be a YT secret agent on a mission to not let anyone get out of the platform. This game also was so underrated. I dropped it at the great wall of china because it was too tedious to go on endless savestates and reloads. At some point you're so behind if you abuse savestates it's absolutely impossible to win. I'm sure if this had at least some quality of life features to make the grinding more beareable to the regular player, I'd have its own cult following it. The title also doesn't help. If it was called The Sacred Cards 2: RoD it'd also helped. But nonetheless, this was a superb review and an superb video. Thanks
