Really like these bench talk videos as much as the cutting ones. Nice to see some of this stuff side by side and get to compare the pros and cons honestly.
I watched the whole thing. I guess I'm a nut about saws. Considering both Husky and Stihl have out new ~70cc saws, I'd really appreciate hearing what you think about their new designs in an upcoming video.
I have 3- 395xp saws. I’d really like to improve performance of them for working saws we use everyday. Need to be dependable, easy starting , and run all day. We do selective logging and thinning of adverage and large trees. The firs and redwoods are usually 4 to 6 ft at base and up to 150ft tall. Hardwood is oak, madrone, bay and miscellaneous bunch that are cut for firewood.
I also have a stihl 661 or 662 it an emtronic saw and it needs help also. When hot its very difficult to start and my crew just goes back to 395 or 372 saws. Help!!! How do I connect with you? Are you doing saws for others? I hope so. Please contact me asap as spring is coming. Thank you.
Great video as always! Out of curiosity, what is a ballpark for the price you would charge to bring out the power of a 661 but keep it as reliable if not make it more reliable than stock?
I'm glad my time is short then..... At this point and considering the wood size now and that it will only be getting smaller as time goes on, I would go with a 382xp Husqvarna. That saw is a one off creation from my humble shop. Based on the 372xp but sporting ~ 82.5ccs. Beastly little machine that pulls a 3' bar with authority it needed. Thanks for watching.
For the most part that information is proprietary. I will say we are using all oem parts, but not necessarily strictly Husky pieces. Now if a guy wanted to ante up then we could get a little most serious...... Thanks for watching.
Keep on doing this kind of videos, best there is! I bought a 661 recently, it's got a newer type of cylinder, the darker one. It's not a Gilardoni for sure, do you know who makes them?
Floriceeel hi. Stihl (Husqvarna, Dolmar, etc.) has "farmed out" the making of certain cylinder assemblies to Gilardoni (they do the cylinders as the pistons are cast in Virginia Beach) over the years as you noted. I've seen where the company will contract out the manufacturing in the beginning. Then at some point, for whatever reason, start doing it in-house themselves. I remember the first time I bought a 'Husqvarna" made 288 assembly. Husky had used Mahle (the gold standard in cylinder assemblies) for decades. Stihl had employed Mahle on many models as well. I took the 288 cylinder kit back to the shop. It looked Ike a poorly made Chinese knock-off jug. Took a minute to get that sorted. Back on track. What you are seeing is the transition away from a second or third party supplier. Thanks for watching.
Daniel hi. No. Pacific Northwest. Depends upon a lot of factors: 1st, whether the saw will be modded or not. The 395 will ALWAYS come out on top if all things are done equally by a tuner that knows what they are doing. Long bars suck up power. The 395 will do a little better there. I consider spare parts & the bar mount. The shop where you want to spend your hard earned dollars. If weight is a consideration, the 661 comes in ~ 2 pounds less. If carb adjustment is problematic, the M-tronic version 661 is a better option as long as you are below 3000' in elevation. Best of luck. Thanks for watching.
Adam King hi. I missed this post - sorry. Smaller displacement smog (strato) saw vs. larger displacement non smog saw. Additionally, Stihl discontinued the 441 for lackluster sales. I would buy the 461. Are you talking about a bench talk video? Thanks for watching.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but you stated that a 661 c is an mtronic? I was under the impression that only the stihl cm models were mtronic, the c model saws still had adjusted carbs.
Brian hi. As far as I know, the c models do not have a semi (limiter caps) adjustable version carburetor. The "c" stands for comfort features. A 661c, is by default a m-tronic machine. The "standard ms661, with a limited controller but semi-adjustable carburetor, is denoted by just the "ms661" placard. It could be a wrap version handle saw for example - 661 R C-M, where the "R" denotes 3/4 wrap style handle bars, and "M" the m-tronic version carb/coil. I would imagine the all the nomenclature is not included on the placard because the lettering would have to be really small on some of the versions. Thanks for watching.
hotsaws101 thanks for the reply. I wasn’t 100% just going off what my local dealer told me. That was also after I told him I did not want mtronic also so who knows
9 people thumbs down? Strange. Keepem comin brother. Thumbs up from me even if the video isn’t as interesting. Does porting take away from the longevity of the engines at all? I can’t find a single person in Winston-Salem NC where I live. Was wanting to send two cylinders off to have ported.
Just moved to a 20 acre ranch and my Husqvarna 440e 18in saw seems a little under powered. Looking at these two saws. Stock which would you recommend? I might port but it be my first time doing so and I probably wouldn't do this for a while. Does your recommendation change with porting/other modifications?
Excellent video comparison. In your early videos it struck me that you despised Stihl products. Are you beginning to warm up to them yourself or are you just addressing them more because the porting market is bringing more of them to you for high performance modification?
Mr42960 hi. This comment slipped through the cracks somehow - sorry. I own 2 044s, a 460, an 064, and an 084. My first saw was an 045. Can't say I despise any brand or particular saw in a lineup. I try and be objective about what's going on with a particular model at the risk of being labeled as a "Stihl, Husqvarna, Dolmar, etc." lover and/or hater. I like to think that the commentary is coming from a place of informative. This, having used many different saws in many different ccs ranges, in many different decades, felling many different wood types and sizes. I like many things about many saws post and present. Thanks for watching.
Hello. If you are thinking of sending it to a tuner to get the "most power" from a 461, it's going to cost a large sum of money and take a fair amount of time massaging things to get it there. Thanks for watching.

Both good saws but I love my 395. Beast of a saw.

Do you have any insanoized 394xp's?
These videos are as good as they get. Thank you for all the info! The question is, if you had to run only one for the rest of time, which would it be?

Are the darker cylinders higher quality?
I bet the proto workshop at both Sthil and Husqvarna look exactly the same, checking out their competitor :-).
I've never seen anything about the stihl 440's. Have you ever customized any of them?
Yes.
Thanks for watching.
Do you have a website or anything? Where are you located? Which one would you buy I’m torn and cannot decide
