I lost all 4 of my grandparents between 2020 and 2022. RP has been a great mental help. In FF14 and other games. I get the feeling of getting away from stress and grief, when playing a great RP game.
If anyone is interested in public Roleplay locations there's a few places I know of: • The Gold Court on Balmung is a great spot for casual conversations and slice of life. • Pearl Lane on Balmung was originally a crime based RP hub, now its a casual slice of life scene with a little bit of crime. • The Bloodsands are an open world location south of the Sultantree on Balmung where people do combat roleplay using dice erolls and the Grindstone system. • The Quicksand (ON MATEUS) is your standard tavern roleplay, drinking contests, barfights, etc and sort of serves as an adventuring hub.
Hah, had to specify the quicksand on mateus after all the previous mentions being balmung because the quicksands on bal are....at thing. Yes, a thing. I go there occasionally to play quicksands bingo.
@@waffle-234 So! Go any Aetheryte in one of three main city states (Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, or Gridania). When you click on the Aetheryte, there is an option to visit another world. Select that option, then choose Balmung. :)
RP isn't something I do much, but it makes me smile when others do it. The other day, I was in Gold Saucer and this little tonberry--thanks Hatchingtide--was rp walking around swiping at everyone with a tiny sword.🥰😂
As a roleplayer even the main story becomes different. When your character is more fleshed out then just a normal pve avatar then cutscenes, outfits and adventures are seen in another light. Your headcanon regarding your character will play a small role in almost everything you do in the game.
THIS! My WoL is a grumpy cat, and just imagining how he would interact (given the choice) with all the other scions makes me giggle. Specifically G'raha and him. Like an annoying little brother that only he can bully.
I'm not into roleplay... but i totally feel you on the introvert and feeling so anxious about putting yourself out there. i have recently been talking more to a group of people who all watch a certain content creator together and its been great. Despite being introverted i really do want some social interaction lol
Honestly, the roleplay community on FFXIV enriches my experiences even in solo play. I made an alt on Mateus a while back to revisit MSQ, and the ambient experiences you get of just groups of roleplayers doing their thing adds a lot of life to a scene. I've seen caravans moving through Thanalan, friends hanging out in Costa, and even guards protecting a person of interest in Coerthas. It's made me even more excited to experience the game a second time because I always wonder what else I'll see in my journey! I'm hoping to join a group of my own someday now that my scholar's fleshed out, but until I do, those experiences are something I'll cherish. 💕
I've always been too shy to RP, but I think it's cool that there's such a vibrant place for it here, and that it has helped so many through such dark times. May you and yours be well throughout the New Year!
Hello, I never comment on TH-cam videos but here we go. I'm a therapist in the real world and I agree that roleplaying on MMORPGs can help people with anxiety. It helps people with anxiety imagine themselves in different situations as if they're engaging in the real world (visualization).
The RP Scene got me into the party scene in FF XIV. Even though I now visit clubs with friends most of the time next to content, when I have free time I just wanna go to a venue and grab a coffee, meet new people, or go on an adventure with someone. It's surely something magical that makes me forget all my woes.
Honestly I love RP, story writing for myself is so much fun. It's a massive creative out And then I had my first ERP experience this week and honestly, I had a great time. We had a good night and we'll probably do it again. It's just a great time sink and it's fun to try different kinds of RP. I stopped feeling like a cringey degen when I realized I am enjoying my game with others and as long as I'm not hurting others, I'll be ok
Roleplay has been a big part of my life since I was a cringey little tween with broken English and I always wanted to do it in a mmo such as xiv, a bit ago I stimvled into a tavern with a few friends and I was struck with genuine adoration seeing people just hang out and having mundane tavern roleplays, heck sometimes I see people out there in the wild rping and I think damn I hope they're having a fun story going on!!! one day I'll get over the anxiety and find the guts to join in lol 😭
As someone who has been roleplaying for a longggg time now, and been rping since Stormblood, I've made a lot of great memories. I love much love for the rp I was in over the years. Though it feels like these days It's hard to find groups of friends for rp. Most of the folks I use to rp with either left or turned into some awful people. The very small handful of people I still have around are wonderful, even if we don't rp much anyone. They got their own thing going on... But the struggle to find people or groups has been rough the past year and a half now. There are for sure ups and downs in RP. Both wonderful and awful people... And there might be times where you will want to quit, but there will be times you really enjoy yourself. I hope everyone at least finds a good group of friends for themselves to rp with. No one deserves to feel lonely in the RP world.
The reason why RP in FFXIV gets a bad rap is because of the cringe minority who send unwanted sexual tells, ERP in the open, stalk people (I have been stalked by people RPing) and more recently the massive amount of RP venue advertisements (at least on my server, people get annoyed by it). Of course RP can be an amazing experience but I think people see the more visual cringe people and are scared. Like you said, it takes experience to watch out for the cringe ones. I think some people don't get into it because they don't want to deal with the cringe ones at all. Unfortunately they create a barrier of entry. Most people I know who would want to try don't because they don't want to run into an uncomfortable situation.
This really shed a new light on ffxiv roleplay for me, tank you! I don't think i will do RP myself, but i won't be as quick to judge anymore. There's awesome storywriters with their headcanons i've seen and i thoroughly enjoy reading them whenever they share them.
I definately agree about not noticing the red flags from a small number of RPers as these people TARGET people who are either new to the game, new to MMO RP or both. I almost walked away from the game from two now widely known walking red flags who stalked me and my friends, bled IC with OOC and in general tried to make my time in the game miserable. For those coming into RP especially coming from a TTRPG background I will say it is very different. Which can be a good thing as well as a very bad thing. One thing to take away from TTRPG into FFXIV RP is if you are planning to RP with someone or a group regularly, have a session zero, discuss what you are looking for in RP as well as what you do not want. If the partner/partners refuse this, don't RP, if they refuse to respect your RP boundaries, don't RP.
Consent is one the most *basic* concepts in anything that involves 2 or more people. And RP is **no different**. If people do not consent to something, you don't do it. Period.
Hey Avy this was a really heartwarming video! I'm just starting my RP journey on 14 and your videos are so helpful! Could you please do a video on what the red flags are to look out for like you mentioned? :)
Honey, the stage you describe of rp is EXACTLY I WENT THROUGH. I just never realized it till now lol. Yeah, rp does help in things, one thing it helps is "writing" skills. Your oc which is the character, the story of it, and overall the sentences you write. BEST PART you get to share it with EVERYONE and mark my words I have seen some people ocs that are just so thought and creative that I just admire reading it. Some flat out above my creative mind set. Along with how some people chose to write their oc, like me I do historical fantasy ocs types and now I am currently working on a fic story on Wattpad with my knight oc. Unfortunately, Wattpad is the only place I feel comfortable rp on, cause I like to "Be careful" of certain people I rp with. Along with finding someone who has good ocs to pair it with my own for the best rp to come out...However, over time I think I am running out of options so I will appreciate some good apps that help me "Find genuine good/safe people to rp with" and "People with good creative ocs" Cause BELIEVE ME. I saw some great ocs, but I have seen MANY less thought and lazy people and I hate to admit it. Lack the creativity for oc and rp, after all, how else do we make good ocs and rps without creativity. So anyone do help me out on a good app that has friendly people, and creative ones.
Because of the biases around rp in game, I ended up avoiding the rp scene per se, but I do adore thinking about my characters place in the lore and how they interact with the story as their own people rather than just being a pair of glasses I'd put on - it gives me a whole new layer of impact from the story, and it really enriched my experience of the game from day one :D
My partner and I are both sprouts, we are on the later half of ARR. We both are gigantic nerds who love D&D so when we started playing we started going through the MSQ together, we started trying to think how our characters would react to situations. It’s changed so much how I play as well as helped engage me with the story so much more than I thought. We both are hooked both on the game and especially on the MSQ.
This was such a calming and nice video :,) The expansion of the world and its story/lore by players is honestly so amazing. And the utilization of public spaces to increase immersion is so cool!! (also I wonder if people roleplay in dungeons?) Anyways I /yearn/ to roleplay but as someone who has been a 'solo' player for a few years now (who is essentially a ghost to other players) the thought of actively trying to find others to RP with is nervewrecking (especially for long term RP) @_@
Some people will most certainly organize RP with friends in Dungeons! I've done it many times, in fact! Once as a bodyguard for an alchemist looking for an amulet in Copperbell Mine! I got to surprise him with the fact my character could also perceive aether at short range, and kept him from stumbling into more than one ambush (Literally where hecatonchiers come out of the walls). She was reluctant to explain HOW a Dragoon could perceive aether, but soon had no choice when she realized the amulet he was looking for contained a voidsent presence. It turned out to be a one-shot, but it still allowed me to add a little more flavor to Nora's story, moving forward. Also, in certain trials/dungeons, I'll throw in some 'flavor text' or little RP bits, reflecting her backstory, or experience with those places, or places like them. It often goes unnoticed in roulettes and such, but sometimes it genuinely catches people's eyes, and they really appreciate the 'extra effort' I put in for them.
Well said and good video. Like a lot of things in life there can be cringe elements to them, but that is usually down to the type of people you encounter. A few rotten apples spoil the bunch as the saying goes. Most of the RP I've taken part in in FFXIV has been fun and uplifting. It's so fun to write a character and immerse ourselves in this amazing world that is Eorzea. And through RP it's a great way to make new friends if you begin talking out of character together as well!
I can understand this a lot though not through ff14, I met people dear to me through rp and I appreciate them a lot. I'm still starting of ff14 but it's always I've to see your videos.
YES! VERY MUCH SO! But that’s maybe because most of the rp stuff I’ve experience has been in Balmung, where 99.9% of all the cringe in FFXIV comes from.
@@ElZamo92 You mean Pearl Lane? I haven't seen any of those types of characters in over a year and a half. Most people in Pearl Lane are chill these days.
I grew up online when RP was a huge thing on instant messengers and sites like Neopets, Quizilla, GaiaOnline etc etc. I used to have a dedicated FreeWebs page to my OCs and I would spend hours and hours writing long RP emails to a partner I've still never met IRL to this day More recently I've had some experience RPing with my husband and we really enjoy deep diving into characters and how they interact with one another Since getting into FFXIV I've been super interested in the RP community but I'm really intimidated by the idea of MMO RP The FFXIV community is so wonderful and I'd really love to get more involved in the RP scene going forward
MMO RP is actually more similar to chat RP's and such you're used to, than you'd think. The biggest change, is the addition of a visual medium. While it can be a big adjustment for most, eventually, looking at everyone else's characters in the actual game, versus reading their reactions through text comes to blend together. And eventually it feels mostly the same as pure text RP. That said, I still love to do pure text RP, usually via Discord these days, because it DOES open the door for more creativity, or simply because there may be no location in game that I can make fit the vision I have in my head for the situation I'm building. And that's fine. Many RP'ers are perfectly willing and even happy to do Discord RP's, or any other text medium you may prefer.
When I was young I didn't really have any friends from my life in school till high school, but before I hit high school I was roleplaying in other games where life is more fun than the world I was born in. It was later when I started to socialize better and people were there for me to help grow up.
i am hardcore player always but 1 time i just join newworld and start to music middle of the city and there is people start to listen and some peoples start to make music like me that was insane and fun
Initially I was invited to RP together with my friends until I heard about one group in another server at the time doing a TTRPG styled RP campaign. I said goodbye to my FC and switched over to the other server and tried out for their crew. I'm happy to say I've been RPing with them since 2018 and it's been a great ride! A very final fantasy-esque story of our own making with rules and homebrew job stuff with ups and downs, people leaving (we even joked that the Orb of Water was cursed because the person holding it would eventually leave the group), and all of us having fun developing our characters! It's honestly what helped me learn to really love my own character, and kept me busy enough in FFXIV outside of patch content. I don't savage raid, I don't even do the EX trials (though I really want to), but I'm still having fun with them!
i used to do multi-para roleplay on FB in highschool... its been ages but ive been wanting to get back into it. MMO RP seems completely different and i have -0 idea how to go about it... i may watch that guide of yours lol!
The 'Making RP contacts' is what I am struggling with right now. It feels so daunting, like looking over a cliff edge and hoping that when you jump, your fall is cushioned as you're transported into the RP world rather than... Well, not. It's also hoping you found the right cliff in the first place. My fc has a small few that do RP but most of them do not, which is fine, you can still have a fulfilling RP experience even without the RP FC, it's just a little more work trying to find and connect with the right group of other RPers.
I'm a sprout that started in August and I'll be honest I didn't really understand RP when my FC talks about it but the perspectives in this video have clarified things for me a bit and I think I may start to understand what they see in it and why it's not for me
I started my RP life in an old Mega Man EXE Fan Forum, and later branched into several other RP forums before reaching FFXIV. What shocked me the most was, simply, the amount of rapid-post or fast-post style pieces in game. I'm used to several paragraph long, massive posts (even now I still make some) - but the sheer depth of a few lines alone took me by surprise. Seeing carrd, being able to figure out how to start my own venue... It was all pretty fun. I've had some rocky experiences, some grade-a lunatics that (to this day) don't leave me be. I've made some enemies, sure, but... this isn't about the enemies made. I've brought my lifelong friends into this game, enticed by an idea to write with me again. Now we run content together, hit venues as a goofy little band of rag-tag relic hunters... This game's RP scene changed me as a writer, and as a person. I learned to appreciate what I have, to be humble, and moreover, to forgive others.
As a person that has roleplayed in several games, I’ve been through it all, and I like getting into character. I know when I can just have fun, and I know when it can be for the purpose of just expressing myself. Just a hobby.
I don't rp, I never have, I've always mainly played grindy, pure action focused games like maplestory and lost ark but its something that I kinda missed seeing in mmos Im always about the grinding, raiding, and solo play But socializing is such a key factor in mmorpgs that I really missed seeing It really makes it look like a getaway from all the stress and frustration you might run into in life Im relatively new to the game, and it seriously makes me happy to see ff14 keeps all the mmorpg vibes alive.
About the edgy stuff, I typically try to avoid making more edgy villains as it doesn't feel too cool to me. Now in FFXIV, I haven't RP'd once so far but I've always liked the idea of being a gunslinger or something like that from Garlemald
honestly, I've been really interested in trying roleplay in FF14! I just don't know where to start sadly... It feels kinda overwhelming. But maybe I should just take that step finally.
I was a pretty huge RP nerd since 2007. I first started roleplaying in Guild Wars 2 and then, after a lot of years passed by, I discovered FFXIV RP. Like every person in the community I also met strange people but it was never that bad as of two years ago when me and my partner broke up. He is a roleplayer as well and he really started some big ass drama. It was so bad that the community of "friends" we gathered around us, some of them people I knew for years, started to insult me because they've heard it all from my ex partner and believed it. No one was willing to listen to me at that point. And so... since 2 years now my brain is pretty much empty when someone asks me if I wanted to do roleplay with them. I can't even come up with new ideas for roleplay scenarios anymore. So please, even if people seem nice in the first place, be aware that this COULD happen. It doesn't mean that it will happen to you though. But take care of your mental health is all I'm saying. ♥
While I haven't RP'd in FF14, I have RP'd on other platforms in the past. I used to really love it. Live for it. I understand how much of an escape it is. I was living through hard times and role playing helped me feel like I could be strong enough to get through it - and I did! My problem now is... I'm so rusty. I haven't done anything RP related in such a long time. I miss it at times, and often think about getting back into it, but I have no idea how to rouse the creative juices like I once did. Same goes for art, but that's a different story. It's also hard when on the platforms I'm still frequenting, all people want to do is the 'spicy' stuff. Maybe adventure will find me again someday.
I’ve just started delving into the RP aspect of this game after finishing RR and it’s so much more welcoming than other MMO’s! One question though, when you make a new character just for rp sake, do you do any of the story as them? Or level them?
For me personally - I usually get a story boost / level boost (if I can afford it), just to get to level 80 content of a job that I've played on my main, and that *usually* gives me access to everything that I need for the character. If I need to get into a newer zone with them, I'll cutscene skip and just rush content/story.
It depends what you want to do with them. If you only want them to be able to visit the 3 starting cities and their housing areas, they only need to get to level 15(?) and go through the ambassador missions in the beginning of msq. If you want to have them go to Hingashi or Thavnair, you'll have to either level them through the relevant expansions or buy level AND story skips.
I RP in every MMO I go to that has it. Didn't even know MMOs had RP til I tried ESO. Then I did some in GW2. Now in SWTOR. One day I'll do it in 14 as well. Most of my time in these MMOs goes into RP now. I look forward to it more than the actual games themselves.
RP is nice as a cope mechanism...the problem happens when you close the game and suddenly realizes that mostly of your experience was inside your head. Reality is often painful..
I kind of just emote to the boss during a Trial/Raid, or to players who help me with something. My main one is the Flame Salute, usually given to the boss just before the fight. It's just something I did in my short lived Trial Solo series and i ended up still doing that I guess.
I've done pretty much all the content in the game save for ultimates; which ended up steering me towards RP. Though.. as a socially anxious introvert myself, I've tried joining tons of communities/interacting with people who have RP details, or carrd info.. and outside maybe a few sessions, it's never really gone anywhere. I've also been attending weekly DND style sessions with people I'd.. like to say are my friends, but everyone's so distant that we really only meet up for the RP then never talk, which isn't bad but.. I crave something more, I'd like to do RP with people that I could also chat with anytime, be close with.. all that, but I'm not really sure where to look now
I've been RPing since I was about 12-13 through various tabletop RPGs and LARPS and eventually WoW. I went through a pretty lengthy period of not wanting to ever RP again due to some bad experiences, but FFXIV RP has helped me ease back into it and remember all the good things that can come of it. It's not for everyone, but I absolutely encourage everyone to try it out.
I am definitely looking into getting deeper on the roleplaying scene but it can be a little overwhelming sometimes with the amount of things happening and no singular place out there to really find where what happens.
Start out low-impact! if you're looking for a way to start from the ground up, small venues, like coffee shops, small bars, anywhere more laid-back types would congregate between adventures are an excellent place to start! Do some basic, somewhat vague RP with people, and often-times, if you meet someone experienced with it, they'll encourage and even help you build a backstory/personality for your character, that you can then build off of further as you continue your RP adventures with other people! The biggest thing with RP, it's to not be afraid. Other people WILL offer to help, if they see you taking a genuine interest, and WANT to inject your character better into the world.
@@tickledpickle5671 aye. Been trying to decide where to hang out first, honestly. So many places to be, so much character to see. Any personal recommendations? I'm a fairly experienced roleplayer myself, just need that start, really.
@@Theodore_LocusCh got it! Honestly, the answer doesn't change very much. These same small venues I mentioned as a great place to meet people, are *excellent* places to find yourself in a group, a storyline, etc. It takes some effort to properly insert your character into a compatible group/story, etc. BUT. Just like the start of many a grand adventure, just meeting the right person at the right time can be just the nudge you need to get back into the swing of things! Also, If you're on Crystal (Or the US datacenter at all, since DC travel is a thing now) You can go to places like Mateus, or even (cautiously) Balmung. You will find many RP FC's, and other groups based around FC's (that won't require you to be IN the FC if you're lucky) that would gladly have you along for adventures, slice of life, etc. Myself? I'm from Aether on the Siren DC originally. I found a group in Balmung that is an absolute perfect fit for me. (And even my VERY prickly character, Nora). Put yourself out there, explore, and don't be afraid to be a bit picky if you're particular about who or what you want to RP.
I have tried to go to venues and places where people roleplay but I have so bad social anxiety that I hardly say anything to anyone 😢 it has still been fun though and I wish I could break out of my shell 😅
I'm a ex Roleplayer and I pitty this because I love Roleplay and I used to Roleplay especially in the long wait for new patches to come. But unfortunately I've mostly met ppl like "the creep", "the elitist" and "Balmung Quicksand Dwellers". And "the creep" really managed it to make me quit Roleplay at all... Perhaps I'm on the wrong server... maybe I should visit the american Datacenters for RP. I would love to begin again with Roleplay but on my current Server that is impossible. I love your videos and they cheer me up you have a very positiv attitude and I like that a lot ^^ Greetings from germany
I think it's a stigma that comes with any sort of hobby now and days. The internet attaches themselves to the negatives of any group rather than notice the overwhelming bounty of positives. Like the Genshin fandom. People just think all RPers are saucy ERPers who try to reenact anime scenes and be the hero. A lot of people RP as regular classes. Alchemists. Fruit Cart vendors. Hell, I have a friend who RPs as an owner of a restaurant. Makes food and all that jazz. To all those who RP: I say tune out the negative nancy clout chasing memers who just want to crap on your hobby. It's your life. You pay your own sub. Do with it whatever you wish to do. Within ToS of course. Pretty sure getting banned sucks.
I used to RP a lot the past 4 years on the Crystal Datacenter but I kept finding either bad experiences or players who tell me that in no shape or form that any ideas I come up with, no matter how I try to explain I’m not god-modding or I try to fit it with the lore, it’s not acceptable. It has just taken the fun out of RP. Nowadays I’m writing fanfiction but again when inquiring about lore to figure out a backstory, it’s again not going to be possible. Why can’t I find those who will work with me and don’t tell me no? 🥺
I have honestly been terrified to even try getting into RP in ffxiv... I am terribly shy and because of that I haven't even come into contact with many (or any as far as I know) role players. I just feel like it is one of those, "another thing I will never get to try," kind of things.
1:47 This middie is **ALMOST** The spitting image of my Middie that I roleplay religiously! Covered left eye: Check Hair and color: Check Armor aesthetic: Check When did I meet Avycatte? :o In all seriousness though, I've been RPing in one form or another since AOL chat rooms (Red Dragon Inn crowd!) and dial-up. 20ish years. And yeah. I had a MASSIVE bout on the 'cringe mountain' for a LONG time, before I realized what real quality writing looked like. With that experience, I have all the right in the world to be a lore-thumping elitist. But I honestly *HATE* those types. Stifling someone's creativity in role-play (No matter the medium) is a big no-no for me. If someone's doing something that seems a bit outside the lore, I encourage and help them find means to make it at least plausible enough that lore-thumpers just kind of... have to accept it and move on. This is, of course, at that player's permission. I have loved Roleplay as an escape, and creative outlet for a VERY long time. So if anyone ever sees a middie named "Nora Covali" out there, and wants to try their hand at role-playing, Don't be afraid to ask! :D
For a while, "cringe" has been a toxic word in many cases that is just thrown around whenever there is the slightest bit of emotion or creativity involved. According to some, anything that isn't black and white is cringe, and they will never believe otherwise. After one friend in college used the word "cringe" basically every time we interacted (about others, not me), it got me to think a bit and I really think most uses of the word "cringe" make no sense, and it makes some people too scared to be happy, essentially being used as a tool to bully people. I, for one, never saw why anyone calls roleplay in any community to be cringe, when it is completely accepted to waste your life engaging in other hobbies instead. Sometimes, people's lives aren't going great, and roleplay can be great for that. It helped me cope with reality a lot as a trans girl (which is something I only "really" realized after I embraced my identity and my inherent desire to roleplay dropped massively). This is great as it makes it a more meaningful activity than other types of gaming. However, when nobody has to justify playing a single-player game, I find it a bit hypocritical to imply that we need to justify roleplaying. It might be that we simply enjoy it, whether that be because we enjoy writing in an interactive way, or anything else. There is no logical reason to judge roleplayers unless you have no hobbies at all, and I am pretty sure that the "alpha grindset no hobby" people are found extremely cringy by the same people who judge roleplayers, as well, lol.
Some role players have freak behaviour. But…as common as I find them being a Balmung native. They are always diamonds in the rough. Also get wrecked people who can’t be a Bal native. I have the degenerate badge of honour!
I have a bit of an Problem regarding Roleplay in FF XIV. Mainly that 2 of the 3 Character I have are not easy to fit into any Roleplay Scenario and the third did I but created recently
I like running into rp’ers randomly, I will low key stalk them a bit for a minute or two. It’s just because I don’t know anything about role play, so I like to get a glimpse into the fuss.
What IS your RP character in the scenes you take part in? I’m actually curious now. I know the community was just…………a fun place to hang out when my……uh…….one friend logged out for the night. I’m still pretty reserved in joining in but I show up and watch stuff happen quite a bit.
I've been roleplaying in FFXIV for a few years now and I honestly think the cool stuff is that the top of Cringe Mountain, not on the other side. It's something I've heard a lot among other roleplayers and I think it's a healthy way to approach things: "Do not kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part that cringes." "I am cringe, but I am free."
To answer the question in the video thumbnail... no. People simply enjoy different things in life, and we all deal with our problems differently _sip._ I'm glad I clicked on this.
I've never thought rp would be cringy, but never also thought it would be my cookie. I like acting and have history with pen and paper rpg, but not really in virtual games. Until I moved from WoW in to FFXIV and created an avatar for the looks I like. After a while, before even realizing, my character had had backstory, ingame friends and a lit of history. She had became an entity of her own without me noticing it... simply realized I had become one of them: the rolepayer.
0:24 --- I mean, as someone who's only played for three years, five sounds long enough to me XD Myeah... the cringe mountain is real o.o Another good source helping you write a believeble background story for your character is "Board Goblins". He does D&D stuff, from what I can tell, but gives some really good tips for role play. Not that I have ever done it myself, but hey, at least I'm entaining the idea ^^°
While I agree with everything you said about roleplay, from it being a tool to fight anxiety to writing engaging storylines to add to your character, I can't say RP in XIV is anything close to what I got to experience in the past. XIV RP to me has been an experience of people clubbing, being unable to separate your IC behavior from OOC behavior, or simply not being able to stick to the fundamentals of RP and breaking character once every 10 minutes. Roleplay is more than just translating yourself and your own behavior through a digital avatar. It's being able to separate yourself from it and fully immerse yourself. Breaking away from the real world and becoming a puppeteer to control someone else. In this case, the character you play. My first experience with RP in MMOs goes back to the early days of WoW and compared to that, finding RP on XIV is like finding a needle in a haystack. While XIV offers all kinds of tools for RP, the lack of worlds tagged and dedicated to it doesn't help either. The chat is dramatic unless you pull out 3rd party tools. Tons of people keep their RP in tells or party chat for this reason as well, which already turns makes finding engaging RP through means other than discord or linkshells into a challenge of its own, and this creates yet another obstacle for people to engage in it. XIV has all the tools and a wonderful world for RP to blossom in, but SE's execution of implementing those tools is a poor one, which they'll hopefully realize sooner or later.
My issue is finding roleplay. It takes a lot more effort on ff14 than I'm used to in 40 to 2000 pop communities. Not too worried though, because I get some text rp regardless. Gotta get that rp fix.
I tried to RP but didn't like being bullied. I don't attempt it anymore and have reason to RP now. I just play FFXIV solo on Maduin where I am the head of my own FC with just me
You don't need a fully written back story to have some RP fun. My main Grumpy is a buff male Hyur pirate stripper. I have every dance in the game on him. he loses his pants and starts dancing at the drop of a hat. As a grandpa with a bad knee, my dancing days are long over. My RP let's me be something I can't be in real life anymore, no back story needed lol
i'm so curious about the ff14 rp scene but everything seems to gravitate around balmung/NA data centers, for someone who doesn't know where to go there seems to be little else to find other than nightclubs. I just discovered the main roleplay hub forum of ff14 has closed just last september even making things even more unreachable.
I am a survivor, so I don't like people putting sexual expectations on me. I tried RP, and every single time, it only took 10 minutes until someone tried to ERP. Then they wouldnt leave me alone, a few of them went on alts to bypass my blacklist.
There's a pitfall worth mentioning in that cringe climb. The people that can't separate the IC from the OOC. Most drama in the RP communities are because of that. RP tends to require a certain amount of discipline with that. That, and not making every character a warrior of light. And if you ARE going to make your character a warrior of light, maaaaaybe make a separate version of that character for fanfiictions (that's what I've done anyway.)
yep, HO BOY the drama that can come out of it. From my own experience, the drama comes from when someone bleed IC with OOC and/or godmods. I dealt with both.
@@TheamayaonnaotakuBlogspot Yeah, it's such a pervasive problem that is seen at all levels of RP. And when it bleeds into real life, it's just...miserable.
@@dragonicmicrophone6594 It absolutely is a horrible problem. And part of the 'cringe mountain' mentioned. And you're correct. It is a skill that all Roleplayers SHOULD learn, but some... just don't get the memo. I had a situation with this in RIFT a long time ago. Long story short, a guy in my guild got offended by something said OOC after an IC RP with a friend of mine. When he realized I was defending her, he went on a crusade against both of us. Slandering us to the rest of the server, griefing us, etc. etc. It got to a point neither of us could even log in to the game without some stranger attacking us, or people kicking us from random group content because of things he'd said about us. That was a VERY harsh lesson in the seperation of IC/OOC.
@@tickledpickle5671 Oof, sorry you and your friend had to go through that. The things people will do in retaliation these days just boggles the mind. I was witness to some drama like that in an RP Discord I'm in for WoW. Cooler heads prevailed that time, but the ripple effect it had was very disturbing. It almost got a leader of another Discord channel booted from it because of the guilt by association. People only believed the person crying slander and didn't bother to ask people on the other side "Hey, what's going on here?"
This has nothing to do with roleplaying, but I'm surprised you haven't mentioned your intro song playing in major city locations lol And you can get the track! Whenever I hear it in game, I just get the urge to come back and watch a video of yours. I love your Au Ra video so much btw ❤ I actually saw a bubblegum dragon get married a few weeks back! Probably should've commented on that video instead...
I have a question, 'cause I'm new in this game and confused: How can I get more Mi'qote hair styles without using a mod? How many are there besides the character creation?
I'm a Roleplayer, but for some reason whenever I mention it, some think I ERP. It's like they disregard that there's also just normal Roleplaying, and honestly it is fun! Also, I don't care for those who do ERP, got no judgement from me, as long as it's not flooding the in game chat.
i made a girl character, I'm not trans or anything but I like to rp my character that is for me a different person like I just act like my character and sometimes I tell myself "ugh maybe I should make a man instead"
i never understood rp but i never bashed people who do it ... I dont think am able to rp cause me smoll brain and my writing speed and grammar mistakes are to many since dyslexia kicks in, but i think its somewhat funny to see people sell drinks on limsa, and they stand there for hours, i always make sure to engage with said people just to make their day more brighter and give them a little gil for their commitment
I don't judge role players. However, I just struggle to have any good experiences to be honest. My experiences have been all the extreme I think though. It led to a lot of irl drama and even to my irl partner (at that time) cheating on me repeatedly through RP in FFXIV and other things (to be fair to FFXIV) which almost made me abandon the game but I won't let him ruin it for me and my FC has been a great group for me. Whenever I try to stay in character mode and RP, I do deal with a lot of people who just give me shit/judgement lol. It sounds like there's a good community out there somewhere...The RP of DND type would be my cup of tea. You mention putting something in your profile but what's the best type of thing to put in the profile to show RP is cool but don't want creepy? XD
1:Never go to Ul'dah in Balmung. There are a *LOT* of great RP communities on Balmung, I'm in one of them. And we have NOTHING to do with 'spicy' RP, or Ul'dah in general. 2: Avoid anything relating to the words "Mare" "Mare Lamentorum" or even the mundane word "Horse" These are all related to a 'mod' that is most often used for 'spicy rp' purposes. Just avoid mentioning it in general. Trust me. 3: Something as simple as putting in say, "Most RP, no ERP" etc. in your search info will deter *most* 'spicy RP'ers' Basically, you're much more likely to ONLY get RP requests from people who genuinely want a REAL interaction, not some creepy ERP that will no doubt leave you wondering what you're doing with your life. 4: Creating a Carrd can also be a *very* effective way to let people know you're serious about your RP, and again, possibly deter the type of people you're looking to avoid. Those were just 4 things I could think of off the top of my head, I hope they're helpful! Good luck! and most importantly, HAVE FUN!
@@Brooke-dy7gx Can't give you a direct link, because TH-cam... But if you look for a service called Carrd, that's the one. It's a very simple "portfolio" builder. It's very common for role players to have a simple page describing their character (backstory, hooks, themes - that sort of thing) and just have a link in their search message.
I just started FFXIV and I'm not really sure what you mean by 'role playing' Is there like a blue mission that I have to do to start or what? Do i need friends because I don't really have any of those yet
For me, I started on WoW but was introduced to the cringe extremly early by my cousin. He was spending the night and wanted to show me just how bad some places were in WoW... specifically Moon Guard. Do note, this was back in 2007 to 2009 when the community was massively worse than it is now. There is so much cringe. Eventually MG became my main realm and I enjoyed it once I began to ignore the cringe mountain. IN 2015, I found an amazing guild that was awesome and cool when it came to RPing which really taught me the basics. Thanks to my cousin, the cringe mountain was more like a hill. Every now and then it will become a mountain again, but not as bad as it was 15 years ago. I will say not all of FF14 is my cup of tea when it comes to RP. I don't like just sitting around a random tavern and just talking. So I prefer more combat/story oriented stuff.
have no issues with role players but.... I've never completed a savage run or ult reclear with anyone that has the rp tag, it has become dodge on sight lol
@@Punkadelic2112 This 100%. I don't do a lot of high end content very often. BUT, I know people who do, and they often RP as well. And are quite good at it. Back in WoW, I played on an RP server (Scarlet Crusade) and was kicked from a raid group once because I was wearing RP gear when I logged off the night prior, so it was still on my armory page. When one of the group memebers saw me in my raid gear, they said "This person is MORE than geared for this raid." the raid leader said, in trade chat of all places. They "I'm not taking them because they RP." And the entirety trade chat IMMEDIATELY crashed in on this guy. "Who shits on people for RP'ing on an RP server? idiot..."
kinda hard to even find roleplay honestly, i feel like 80% of the ppl just "roleplay" the "foreplay" to the erp "roleplay" and if u make the mistake of telling someone that ur not a cute uwu girl irl they will stop talking to you. i remember feeling bad just for beeing a male in this community, my char is a girl so im rping as a girl but yea once ppl lose the illusion of you actually beeing a girl they lose interest. i even thought about just pretending to be a girl because it kinda made me feel really bad when this happend again and again. but i just quit the game.
My opinion - do whatever you want as long as it doesn't break tos and doesn't slow down my dailies. Can't stand RP mallwalkers in when I'm trying to fit one last run in before bed
I lost all 4 of my grandparents between 2020 and 2022. RP has been a great mental help. In FF14 and other games. I get the feeling of getting away from stress and grief, when playing a great RP game.

If anyone is interested in public Roleplay locations there's a few places I know of:
• The Gold Court on Balmung is a great spot for casual conversations and slice of life.
Quicksand on Mate us might be like that now - due to the 'tourists' going to Balmung for their Pattaya Beach fantasies these days.
Pearl Lane on Mateus is also crime based or dark RP as well as many of the criminal FCs work out of there
Hah, had to specify the quicksand on mateus after all the previous mentions being balmung because the quicksands on bal are....at thing. Yes, a thing. I go there occasionally to play quicksands bingo.
How exactly do i get to Balmung from Diabolos
@@waffle-234 So! Go any Aetheryte in one of three main city states (Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, or Gridania). When you click on the Aetheryte, there is an option to visit another world. Select that option, then choose Balmung. :)
This is how I met you actually, through roleplay, and, as short as our journey was in RP, I enjoyed it. You are an amazing Rper and writer.
I remember our scenes and how much fun they were! You're an amazing writer too. RIP Nikolas. We'll remember him always. 😢💜
RP isn't something I do much, but it makes me smile when others do it. The other day, I was in Gold Saucer and this little tonberry--thanks Hatchingtide--was rp walking around swiping at everyone with a tiny sword.🥰😂
That's friggin' adorable! Aww!
It's surely something magical that makes me forget all my woes.
is so magical that you have a short video of how you love a character in video game. you rp cos you lonely irl.

Honestly I love RP, story writing for myself is so much fun. It's a massive creative out
And then I had my first ERP experience this week and honestly, I had a great time.
From non-Balmung players I might add. 😂
@@NarhiFaunlha have you gone to crime alley? There you’ll find lots of edgy WoLs that are rude and straight up spiteful for no good reason…
I used to have a dedicated FreeWebs page to my OCs and I would spend hours and hours writing long RP emails to a partner I've still never met IRL to this day
More recently I've had some experience RPing with my husband and we really enjoy deep diving into characters and how they interact with one another
Since getting into FFXIV I've been super interested in the RP community but I'm really intimidated by the idea of MMO RP
The FFXIV community is so wonderful and I'd really love to get more involved in the RP scene going forward
Great video ❤ sproud here, love the social part and this community. Absolutly fell in love with this game 😊.
I don't rp, I never have, I've always mainly played grindy, pure action focused games like maplestory and lost ark
but its something that I kinda missed seeing in mmos
Im always about the grinding, raiding, and solo play
But socializing is such a key factor in mmorpgs that I really missed seeing
It really makes it look like a getaway from all the stress and frustration you might run into in life
Im relatively new to the game, and it seriously makes me happy to see ff14 keeps all the mmorpg vibes alive.
About the edgy stuff, I typically try to avoid making more edgy villains as it doesn't feel too cool to me.
Now in FFXIV, I haven't RP'd once so far but I've always liked the idea of being a gunslinger or something like that from Garlemald
awww this video is so wholesome! subbed!
honestly, I've been really interested in trying roleplay in FF14! I just don't know where to start sadly...
It feels kinda overwhelming. But maybe I should just take that step finally.
Start by lurking in the Mateus Quicksands or the Gold Court in Balmung with your afk tag and watch how others do it, tbh!

No, break tos. Just don't get caught.
This was a lovely video!
Has your roleplay experience changed now that you are more well known?
Where do you write your character story?

This middie is **ALMOST** The spitting image of my Middie that I roleplay religiously!

When did I meet Avycatte? :o
In all seriousness though, I've been RPing in one form or another since AOL chat rooms (Red Dragon Inn crowd!) and dial-up.
Vex I watch for my weekly TOP pain, Avy, I watch after to decompress from the insanity :D
It's something I've heard a lot among other roleplayers and I think it's a healthy way to approach things:
"Do not kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part that cringes."
"I am cringe, but I am free."
To answer the question in the video thumbnail... no. People simply enjoy different things in life, and we all deal with our problems differently
_sip._
I'm glad I clicked on this.
I never get to roleplay in the game, it's one of the experiences I've wanted to do. But I don't really know what I want out of it.
0:24 --- I mean, as someone who's only played for three years, five sounds long enough to me XD
Myeah... the cringe mountain is real o.o Another good source helping you write a believeble background story for your character is "Board Goblins".
I'm gonna be getting back into ff 14 soon and specfically the rp scene.
You've made me wanna write lore about my character ♥
Hello so curious how is it possible to wear eyeshadow and blush! :( I don't see that option lol. It looks like you have rosy cheeks and eyeshadow!
Can't you make a guide on how to like get into roleplaying in FFXIV? Like how do I approach people, what are the unspoken rules, etc.?
Here's a RP guide I made for beginners. I might make more in the future! th-cam.com/video/w7j4V8S3gA0/w-d-xo.html
The people who get mad at people role playing in a role playing game are cringe
first thing what came to my mind after seeing the thumbnail I thought yes. yes it is
I have a question, 'cause I'm new in this game and confused: How can I get more Mi'qote hair styles without using a mod? How many are there besides the character creation?
I'm a Roleplayer, but for some reason whenever I mention it, some think I ERP.
It's like they disregard that there's also just normal Roleplaying, and honestly it is fun!
Also, I don't care for those who do ERP, got no judgement from me, as long as it's not flooding the in game chat.
i made a girl character, I'm not trans or anything but I like to rp my character that is for me a different person like I just act like my character and sometimes I tell myself "ugh maybe I should make a man instead"
Tbh I find it weird, however, it doesn’t impact my gameplay or how I play the game. It’s a video game make it what you want it to be
i never understood rp but i never bashed people who do it ...
I wish Omega's RP scene was so vibrant. People just stick to their FC houses more and more :(
I don't judge role players.
@Tickled Pickle you're so amazing and kind for these inputs/advices! May I ask what you mean create a card?
@@Brooke-dy7gx Can't give you a direct link, because TH-cam... But if you look for a service called Carrd, that's the one. It's a very simple "portfolio" builder. It's very common for role players to have a simple page describing their character (backstory, hooks, themes - that sort of thing) and just have a link in their search message.
@@SylvanFeanturi Thank you so so much 💖
Great video ❤
what song is playing in the background? i cant remember the title its my favorite!
It's 'Spoken Without End' from Endwalker ost!
now if only i could find an rp fc that doesnt have massive ooc drama
I've never completed a savage run or ult reclear with anyone that has the rp tag,
it has become dodge on sight lol
Most of the more hardcore roleplayers I know are also hardcore raiders, using roleplay as a way do clear their mind after that content.
They "I'm not taking them because they RP."
And the entirety trade chat IMMEDIATELY crashed in on this guy.
Yes. That's part of the fun.
What is friends? It is a food? Can you eat it?
My opinion - do whatever you want as long as it doesn't break tos and doesn't slow down my dailies. Can't stand RP mallwalkers in when I'm trying to fit one last run in before bed
I haven't role played in years. I think I'm out of practice. And never done it in XIV
I'd love to do a collaboration photo shoot with you after 6.38 releases.
