One thing that I always find annoying is I don’t know where to watch, what time to watch, and who is competing at these competitions. I wish it was more structured like other sports leagues where it’s easy to find a broadcast and a schedule for the nfl, nba, nhl, etc which I hope this will help solve that problem
Seriously, the diamond league schedules are so hard to get a hold of its very frustrating
@@wisforwinner it's pretty easy just go to their website.
It’s still in its early stages, I’m sure before the first race kickoff in April, all those details would’ve been revealed to us.
Also TH-cam spoils all the results with titles
NBC and Peacock primarily show T&F here in the US. Primarily on the weekends during the season
Penguinz0 is that you “the track and field situation is horrible”
Johnson went hog wild full wacky mode on athletics
Listen, I dislike track and field segregation as much as the next guy. Athletics discrimination? Booo, that’s some bad stuff, don’t like it…. But…
@@DanielKendall2010 he changed the title 😔
There's 1 thing that does need to change. I've watched the sport for roughly 35 years and 1 downside is when events go to places where the sport isn't popular, you see athletes competing in practically empty stadiums. Having events in Qatar and China when the organisers know the stadiums will be empty. They either need to market it better for these countries or go somewhere else.
I don't understand why DL doesn't make more use of that tokyo stadium? Feels like a huge missed opportunity
Except attendance tends to be very good in China. The US on the other hand has terrible attendance.
Qatar and China based on what you don't like right haha.
@@bpotato3310 I don't understand how your comment fits in. Could you clarify for me. He was talking about empty stadiums. Which I think we all would like to see filled.
@@XDF745 I think we need a NEW track and field capital. After 2020, I have NO desire to travel to Eugene. I live in Texas. So I'm not "biased" for my "State". I propose that Cleveland Tennessee or Chatanooga Tennessee or Knoxville Tennessee, or Branson Missouri become the new Track Capital USA. But Eugene has run its course. Pre passed away in 1974 and it's time to move on.
When people only care about the track side of your sport every 4 years, it does need saving lol
Nobody seems to care much about any individual sports until the Olympics comes around.
MJ's problem was he used the word saving instead of promoting.
I don't mind the Michael Johnsons track league, cause it's his private organization and he can do whatever he wants with it.
Where outrage should be directed for excluding field events is World Ultimate (watered down) Championships.
By the way I think both of those organizations are terrible even for long distance track cause both of them exclude my favourite events - 3000mSC and 10'000m.
Also Michael Johnson's track leaugues format is terrible for 3000m and 5000m group cause it's going to have no pacers and people will be forced to double in both events, making it for slow and booring races with tired athletes.
Field events aren't excluded in the World Ultimate Championships, but reduced, that's a difference. Well, 10'000m is rarer than 3'000m and also takes a longer time.
Honestly, I agree with Johnson. I ran sprints for 10 years, and one thing I noticed is that us current/former athletes have biases for our respective disciplines. Sprinters favor sprinting events, distance runners favor distance, field athletes favor etc etc. Grand Slam Track is his league, he gets to do whatever he wants with it. He doesn't favor distance or field events because he didn't compete in those events. I think Tara misinterpreted his quote. Johnson wasn't insulting the field events, he is simply staying in his lane (pun intended). And who knows, if Grand Slam Track is successful, Johnson said he's open to adding other events in the future.
ofc he is right normal people only know 100m
Naaa, Johnson just mad because he couldnt jump and throw.
She didnt misinterpret anything. She was looking for her moment. Just another US athlete with a slick mouth and bad attitude.
I love the private competition idea. They are different sports. The meets work together so the running is outside while field meets are inside the track. It's great. Idk nuthin' bout the drama. Hope they work it out. all sports matter.
He said "I think I can save track, I don't think I can save track and field." He didn't say that Field events cannot be saved. Don't be that tv media BS. 3:40
English isnt your strongsuit
I sat here thinking the same. He totally misquoted MJ and not unintentionally either.
This again is only a thing in the US where you insist on calling the sport "Track and Field" it is actually called Athletics. Theres no splitting it, nor should we try. And this is coming from a 100 / 200m runner.
And some Americans refer to track and field as just track
That is a very loaded and esoteric question or opinion. Is it the money? Is it the gate? Is it 9+ seconds of attention? Is it participation? Is it dominance? Is it flamboyance? Is it prime time showings? Is it cultural? compared to What? bowling? Or golf? Or NASCAR?
Just spitballing a little here.
I here both it doesn’t matter 😂🤣
I think you’re a hundred percent right.
Yep
Track needs saving in the sense that the best runners don't run against each other enough.
A turn towards something where you kind of "HAVE TO" show up, like other pro sports, makes sense.
Everyone's gonna have bad days.
But that is the Diamond League. You have to show up to gain points toward the grand final with the big prize purse. Diamond League is growing. It’s the broadcasting that needs improving. Free to air! Not an obscure streaming service.
I'm here commenting again. Many of the people 'trying' to save the sport do not understand marketing and the issue isn't simply throwing money at the sport. The reason Bolt raised the bar was due to his charisma and he brought his personality to the track. Jamaicans were always fast, you can go back to 1948 Olympics in the 400m, but Bolt is the first to show the world the raw spirit of Jamaicans, their free spirit, determination, flair, entertainment, and belief bottled up in how he presented himself to the public. The world gravitated to that raw authenticity. So my point is, it's about the authenticity of the athletes and marketing the athletes by simply giving them exposure and creating an avenue to diaplay that in an accessible product.
This has nothing to do with field sports. Bolt raised the bar because he’s an outlier. Aside from that, we’re talking about making the sport more lucrative so that people outside of the big names can actually pay their bills. Bolt was an anomaly but didn’t advance the business side of Track. He was fun to watch and is a house hold name, but that’s it. Michael is at least trying.
Bolt was a 'one off' and came when the sport needed a boost. Bolt almost single handedly did what no one else has ever done for the sport. He was a champion but also had charisma. People who knew nothing about the sport were drawn to Bolt because as the undisputed number one, he brought fun, unlike the days of USA dominance when the guys behaved more like heavyweight boxers when waiting at the blocks.
I'd add that television in the USA likes that, too, plus he was in short races (allows for advertising surrounding the races), and lots of very 'dynamic' announcers on the broadcasts. It all looked like a show (which it is, an entertainment option). The only thing missing today is the entertainer(s).
4:15 I mean, surely it’s kinda obvious as to why Chopra’s THAT much more popular on social media than others; his nationality. Let’s imagine Chopra was from the USA. Do we really think he’d be anywhere near as popular as he is? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that field events are getting attention through people like Chopra (and Nadeem) and Duplantis, but using Chopra as an example to show that field events are as popular as track events isn’t the most accurate way of doing it, imho. It probably helps that Chopra’s literally India’s ONLY hope of an individual medal at an Olympics or World Championships (atm, at least) so he’s treated like a hero by 1.4 billion people (at least, those who watch track and field). On another note, when do we find out who’s male and female athlete of the year? Isn’t it the 1st of December?! If so, fast your votes in everyone, I have already!
I literally said this to myself as I was watching, it's because he's from India. I can almost guarantee most of his followers are from India. It's like T series on TH-cam, 100 million plus subs isn't all that special when it's less than a tenth of that population 🤷♂️
@ Exactly.
@@MilesNJRacing Exactly, we need the breakdown of where his subs are from. Most certainly the majority are from India.
TRP always does this. He tries to pump all this data but is poor at analyzing. He either likes to treat us like we’re dumb or purposely does it to generate traffic off manufactured drama - I think it’s both.
@@josephmaniscalco7830 I think that’s the case for most channels on the TH-cam period, followed by the USA - most likely.
Im just happy distance made the cut 😂
I‘m laughing, but I do feel bad for distance runners and fans, I swear. 😂
What is this Lond Jump. Sounds like an interesting event.
😂
Is it like regular Track but they take longer steps right?
"Lond" = An independent nation, country or realm. Lond jumping actually sounds pretty epic.
I think it’s when your spouse sees a suspicious message on your phone and you have to negotiate yourself to safety as fast as possible while dodging objects thrown at you. 🤷🏽♂️
I find track to be more entertaining than field so I don't see a problem with what Johnson is doing. Others need to promote support and fund sports and events they'd like to see or participate in.
Its simple. Diamond Leagues should feature professional teams & not individuals competing for points hence trophy.... just like NCAA, IPL, football or baseball leagues. Trading/buying athletes between teams ensures the most talented get paid. New talent is scouted for. Teams can be based all over the world. We'll get to see 4 x 100 relay teams with say Tebogo, Lyles, Kishane, Simbine which will never happen under any other circumstance. Way better than the current ideas floating around suggesting fragmentation of track & field.
What would be the team size? Where would events take place? Would track clubs have to merge?
This could be an interesting idea.
Track and Field is a lot harder to build a team around because of the nature of the sport. The NBA, NFL, or MLB are team sports, how well the team does depends on how well the athletes coordinate and work with each other. Sure you could have Nike make a super team for the 4x100 but the only athlete coordination is in the handoffs, and then its also less competitive if all the best players are on one team. Basketball and football have quarters, its one team against another, and the teams are constantly trading points. Outside of high school track and field, the meets are always several teams competing all at once, and points are one-offs. Also, points are scored far differently. Cross country is a team sport, but Track and Field is a sport of individual competition, changing that would make it worse for the athletes, even if it's better for audience retention.
IPL mentioned 🙌
As a former thrower, I only became a “track” fan due to my events often finishing early and spending the rest of the meet cheering on runners 😂
why doesnt a legend from the field aspect do what michael is doing, seems like the logical idea that way they can both be rejuvinated
The reason Michael has been to able to get this underway is because of investors. Without investors willing to put there two cents into the project, it will be very difficult to create a league or meet specifically for field events.
The problem with track and field is everything is centered around world records instead of competition. I don't see in every tennis, golf, NFL, football, F1 competitions people are talking about world records. People go watch go watch and support their favourite athlete/team and hope they win.
Which is why every event should be based on teams and scoring like in the NCAA, how you do this I do not know and going by Country but then some like USA or China would dominate in every event becuse of the immense difference in people's body design in these countries.
It comes doing to the athlete, coaches and promoters. In tennis, there is no team but before the US Open, all the discussion is about who will win and not world records. The best athletes always compete against each other throughout the year but in athletics, they only meet in Olympic finals.
@@khaldonevans4295 MJ is trying to focus on the "competition" not records. In fact I don't know that his events are even certified yet with the WA/IAAF. Its still not listed on their site. The Athlos meet was cert'd as a Continental Tour meet.
Biggie here is going to be getting folks to these meets, so keep the costs low and the locations accessible; if the 3-day meet in Los Angeles is a UCLA I won't go, its just a horrific drive to-and-from that place; maybe try Mt. SAC with its new track surfaces?. Good idea to start with some shorter track events but they will eventually have to expand the event offerings. I noticed the one in Los Angeles is a three day event, so maybe some field events on 'day two'? Also put the shot and discus rings closer to the middle area of the infield to increase visibility (maybe next to a straight-away).
Back in the late-1970s/early-1980s there used to be 'field events only' meets in a few locations around the USA. There was one in Southern California at Cal State Long Beach I use to go watch. All the key areas were grouped together at one end on the track (both inside and outside the curve) with implement landing areas away from the crowds (obvious safety reasons). But all the athletes were in the same area, leaderboards showed who was up next so you could easily move between events to see jumpers/throwers in action. Pretty cool way to do it. I even saw John Powell set a discus world record at one of them.
Well im looking forward to Grand Slam
I'll watch - for a reasonable price. But if the idea is to make up sales with streaming because they're not selling actual tickets at the stadiums? Then he's right back to his original problem of how to get butts in the stadium's seats.
One big issue with Grand Slam Track is it is taking place in the USA and not Europe where stadiums are packed during meets. Yankees only care for American Football, Basketball, and Baseball.
they should add NFL kicking for length as a field event. That would be fun
💯
It's the first year, typically Americans and Jamaicans dominate sprinting events, and the first meet is in Jamaica, not the US.
"it doesnt need saving" perhaps atm but when the only time people even care about your sport even slightly is every 4 years and you dont have a superstar like bolt then its inevitable, idk why they dont think 20-30 years into the future with this one "your long gone" the disrespect there when he knows more about how all this shit works better than most aside from someone like sebastian coe but specifically track michael knows most
agreed. It was quite rude. However, I'm not surprised, I've always thought she comes off as quite ignorant and fake.
I think Michael Johnson is just one man with an opinion. I admit that I am more of a track fan than a track and field fan but I never dislike watching field events. I just don't go out of my wat to watch them. I was a sprinter in school so I'm attracted to that aspect of the sport.
As a viewing product, how long can an event be if you eliminate the field events? Will it be just an hour? Can you fill two hours of programming if you just have the sprints?
If you get rid of the field, do you need to get rid of the heptathlon? A best athlete event is always a good event and it wouldn't have so many competitors that it would take too much time. I think they have to be included.
I watch nearly all events, but the track portion is definitely my favorite. I'm sure the word "track" in my statement can easily be replaced with another event for someone else. I'm just a fan of sport. If competition is involved, I'll tap in! Idc if it's thumb wrestling! The best of the best will battle in the end, and I'll be right there shouting for my favorite competitor to win! 😂
There’s a bias in the media for track events. They do not take the long. Field events however are a different story. Field events need more air time.
What a disrespectful way to address one of the greatest in Track & Field history, clearly she would've went about it differently if she actually had respect for her sport, whether you disagree or not
Fr she basically just said he's a washed up irrelevant old man, typical gen z response. Wonder if she would say the same if it was Bolt doing this. Either way Michael is one of the legends of the sport and deserves respect
Good for her. MJ said a stupid thing.
Tara felt disrespected. That's why she responded that way. However we don't live in a time where people call you up and have a conversation adult to adult......nope we use social media.....one of the greatest contributors to the decline of sanity in America. No offense to Tara.
@ Fair point, even you and I have fallen victim, lol
It’s the idea she is addressing. Michael Johnson is reinventing the wheel to try saving a sport that doesn’t need to be saved.
I like track events more but the two are balancing act; changing track & field to just track would suck. 3 hours of back to back running events only wouldn't improve anything, you want the field events sprinkled in there too.
I always tune in for the track events. The field events are like commercials for me, so I either use them to take a TV break or fast-forward through them whenever possible. Johnson's track meet sounds great as an attempt to break the hold that Diamond League has on track. I relate to track more because I run, but I never do things like pole vault, throw javelins, long jump or hammer throw.
title be sounding like a moistcritikal video
I think Michael Johnson is only considering the American audience, which is mostly only interested in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and relays. The fact is, the field events and longer distance races are VERY popular around the world.
TRC make some good arguments. I think Michael Johnson has to start somewhere and will likely evolve in 5 to 10 years.
Athletics needs more upports to athletes as it is a life long career as it is for NFL, NBA, baseball, golf, soccer, etc. Pay rates between sports varies a lot. Too much actually. Trail blazers are very important to their sport, as in the case of Michael Johnson
MJ is/was a track man. I understand why he wants track events. Not field. But to me I say, let him have his events, but please let’s have field events without someone who is biased.
The one change I expect to see some time in the future is an acceleration competition and a top speed event.
I think these two categories can bring a new fan base and sub categories such as base 0-1 second, base 1-2 seconds & base 0-1 KPH, base 1-2 KPH, etc...
The technology already exists to chart these metrics on peaks and degree slopes that fans can easily follow and get excited about.
Sprints are more popular in the west. Itd be the same in india if their first gold was in a track event.
Sprints and distance running are most popular in the west probably because people are doing distance running as a hobby or they like the sprints becuse of seeing the world's fastest man or the world's fastest man of the year/era, kind of like a superhero thing.
The sport is called athletics. Americans can focus just on the track or on the field, but both are here to stay regardless what Johnson says.
He's 100% right.
If they 'don't need saving' then what are they complaining about? Just keep doing what they're doing, it doesn't effect field - that's the point.
Those events just needs coverage and reintroduction to the rules and techniques being brought forward. The objective is the find the best at each event how it's formatted for television viewers to keep spectators interested and vested in the support of their favorite field events.
I think MJ said what he meant to say. I think TRP’s business model feeds off these sore spots in the sport. He picks & chooses who/what to support or drag in the mud… it’s all about the algorithm with him. The dude rarely comments on GST but took full advantage to discuss this ‘sound bite.’
I'll start out by saying I'm old. I remember the heydays of T&F in the '80s-early 2000s. I initially got sucked into T&F because my older brother threw shot and discus and I got dragged to his meets. I was a huge fan of Michael Johnson's. So to see him taking cheap shots at field events for a soundbite to promote his league is disappointing. The problem isn't the worldwide popularity of T&F - it's the decline in the US that needs to be addressed and all I can say to him is - good luck trying to fix the problem with multi-day events. If you really think people don't have the attention span to watch 12 jumpers/throwers for 2 hours, then WTH would you think people want to pay money to watch 2 days of running? What am I missing? If you live in a big city do you really want to spend 2 hours commuting both ways to a 2 hour track meet 2 days in a row? And how much are the tickets? Is that a bundle package or do you buy each day separately? If it's the latter the 2nd day easily outsells the first day. I'm sure they'll refine GTS as it goes along, but the reality is - Americans just don't care that much in non-Olympic years. There's far too many other sports in the US market to compete with.
Field the last 2 years has been WAAAAAAY more exciting and competitive than track.
I will agree with this on the Sprint side and long distance side 5,000--10,000, Middle distance rivalries in 1,500--3,000 are kind of interesting with a few calling each other out each race they are going to be at for strictly on the track racing, not including road events.
Track and Field. Like Carl Lewis who was the best in long jump and 100m (for a while). I cant imagine being a fan to only track. High jump for example is such a beautiful sport.
Also the best track disciplines are 4x400m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m ;-)
I think crossing the pond is the big detriment. Great athletes don't travel across the Atlantic Ocean often. Travel is tough.
Alica the clear number 2.Interesting. 🎉
thanks to the mangina simps
Field events need to take advantage of what running can’t: the audience can be close to the athletes competing. I would love to see a small venue that showcased things like high jump and pole vault which are so insanely cool to view in person. Field should create its own league
It's easily possible to slot one field event at a time into a televised track meet and fit the product that GST is promoting. However, athletes would need to understand that their attempts run to the meet director's schedule, not their own. When it's time to perform, there is no time for them to still be preparing.
The biggest problem is getting some type of network support. There has to be a schedule where track fans know when and where to tune in. If the biggest part of the promotion isn't on how to watch the events then the whole point of Grand Slam Track is mute. Create it and they will come only works if they know when and where to come too. I search hi and lo to be able to find track event that I know are going on. The best I can do is find highlights of the event after the fact.
This is what happened in Cricket. Always headed by England, which was the home of the sport. However, through sheer numbers of fans and fanatical support form the sport, India is now the largest power influence within that game.
I've been a competitive track athlete for 10 years, but I've never personally cared for field events. I respect others who do, but I couldn't care less about them. I see MJ's viewpoints.
Hi TRP, you are a great channel. Can you please make a video on Sifan Hassan’s 3 Olympic medals in Paris and also in Tokyo Olympics?
I like Grand Slam because it will make the diamond league inc prize pools to compete, but ultimately I feel that the diamond league coupled with world athletics events is the best display of the sport. The diamond league does a great job of using field events to fill the gaps between running events-which grand slam will never be able to do. I also firmly believe that everyone has a niche in this sport and that isn’t possible if you take the field events away.
I think he meant that they need more money for athletes that isnt directly tied to sponsorships, something similar to the NBA/NFL but for Track, i think you're right about why he says he can't "save" the field events. Theres a reason field events are essentially just filler content so the olympics always has something for the broadcasters to put inbetween their advertisements.
Did Tara forget how hard it is to get a legit sponsor for field events? There’s a reason why only the world top 5s have deals and others are on travel.
He's a business man making a statement. It was about saving the integrity by entertaining and growing the demand for athletics ent. He can tell you how to ent in track, not in field. Also, there are too many hands in the stew. Like nobody asked ppl how they feel. He talking strategy and monies.

Most people have no idea who the winners of the long jump were in Paris. Like swimming its the blue ribbon 100 metres that determines the fastest. For any other event to get any oxygen requires a GOAT like DuPlantis in the pole vault. This has been the case for at least 50 years
Personally, I enjoy both track and field events. I love the women's high jump more than any track event.
The field events do take hours to peak and that time frame is at odds with track events. To give field events their deserved attention a separate event is required. So, let's take GST off the hook.
Is it not possible for each field event to have a preliminary heat to qualify for a final that would involve the top 5 or 6 athletes going for a certain number of attempts?
Secondly, the events happen in pairs - say, male high jump and female high jump - and viewers can click back and forth between two different events or watch them both on a split screen setting - the idea is the viewer has control over which event they want to see first and they can skip events if they want. So, a non-linear programming style as opposed to the linear programming of track events. There is definitely a fanbase. Ultimately, it's not that complicated.
This is an American thing. The sport needs more exposure to the public. There's no coverage of track on sports talk shows and most folks have no clue when meets are shown, or when the season starts.
Personally I would love it if you could talk more about the decathlon. I love the decathlon and wish there was more on it
This is how you "save" Track and Field: Field events on Saturday & Track events on Sunday OR vice versa. NOTHING is more annoying as a T & F fan, than having field events during track races. Also the TV coverage of distance events needs to change. They got to stop showing 3 laps in the 5000, then go to commercial break, then come back and show field events, {of which the vast majority of attempts are FOULS} then all of a sudden Kara comes back on and there's 2 laps to go. Gee, thanks a million !! I missed laps 4 through 10 !!
How about a track and field team competition from different brand, Nike, New Balance, Adidas, and Puma.
Dude, Grand Slam Track with legalized gambling. This things going to be huge, not big like the other sports, but big enough to make it a make or break thing about getting into this league. Goodbye field.
Michael Johnson says it needs saving so it needs saving. Especially if track and field participants want to be more respected and make more money.
Either way I love track & field, always have, always will; I just want to see them get compensated.
I could not imagine track without field or field without track!
Track & Field athletes and fans care about Track & Field. The general public however, doesn't care about field events. The idea of "only the fastest" sounds like a solid plan for track meets/events, but it'll definitely hurt the field events for sure. Maybe the javelin, shot, and disc can survive as the general public might get into seeing things thrown far, but hj, lj, tj, might be in trouble. Just a thought.
Track and field is one of the old sports in the world. It’s not going anywhere. It doesn’t need saving. Every time there’s a new guy making new records the popularity grows temporarily.
Polevaulting has saved itself. Let’s face it, watching pole vault live is pretty tedious. It takes longer than any other event, and only has brief seconds of action. It’s great to watch the highlights, though. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it has become its own thing. You can get street vaults in places like Michigan, Key West, Charlotte, and all over the country. No other events, justpolevault. The Masters polevault community is thriving. They are polevault gyms all over the country. Pole vaulting doesn’t need to be saved.
I think he is trying to get more money for more athletes who can raise their level to top level performances. he knows track so he is focusing on track. maybe he could have used a better choice of words though, since right now his statements are being picked apart, but think about it - people are talking a bit more about it as a result. Keep talking Michael. Follow your vision.
The true issue lies in the fact that the sport is so genetics-based. The same nations continue to win the same titles year on year. Athletics just so happens to be one of those sports where the driving factor in whether or not you have a shot at winning or not is down to your genetics, there’s very little that skill can offer, so as a result of that, the same names and the same nations win, year on year, it becomes predictable and there’s rarely any excitement or anticipation for who could win
I do not pay attention to the people that win let alone compete. I love running. I love watching and actually running. I only know the most populace names that drop around the webage. In other words, fix it or don't. I think it would be fun to watch consistent running meets streamed regularly in full. I think that would mix up the competitors by allowing many different individuals to rise that are often ignored.
I, for one, have had enough of watching the same athletes lining up for the same event time after time. As all of the athletes want to win and reach the moon (or jump over it) it's always an inspiration to watch the efforts of exceptional athletes (who I don't know) in their efforts in competing with one of our super-heroes.
I imagine that more in the idea of local teams competing with each other, it would be incredibly interesting (for me) to pit, say, Bensonhurst athletes in competition with Bay Ridge athletes and have a team of professionals filling out the field. I'd come to watch my local hero and learn just how wonderful my rival-hero also is.
I'm looking forward to the Enhanced Games!

Formula 1 saw a boost after the tv show drive to survive made the drivers into characters you rooted for.
Not sure if it needs saving or if the "soap" nature of a tv show is a positive but it likely does increase interest.
Bolt’s result where unseen…comparing today’s popularity to those times is to deny that Bolt was like nothing we’ve ever seen
The way I see it no one else stepped up to the plate. He did weather u like it or not sit back enjoy the show or don’t watch but I can tell u more runners n younger generation will watch. ✌🏽
Tbh field is liked is just that its popular in different countries
T Davis sounds so lame and shady for the diss on Michael Johnson…she’s dead wrong! Track and Field do not have to be together…most fans either look at one or the other! A few folks who like track look at long jump, maybe…but not much else. There is no rule that they should go together, and I do not think anything is wrong with field…it’s just that the two are not the same and there clearly isn’t much public demand. So, I believe having the fastest of the fastest competing is an exciting idea that should generate more revenue and views. Meanwhile, I feel it would be great to see the best jumpers, throwers, etc., in separate sessions could be exciting, as well! As it stands today, we rarely get to see all the field rounds, anyhow, and it would be nice to see the entire field sessions.
If Michael Johnson is "long gone" how is that he's probably mentioned at some point at least once during any major track event that's broadcast on air. Any time the 200m or 400m is run, his name is always mentioned. The man has 4 Olympic golds and 8 world championship golds.
He’s not the first Indian to win gold. Good video though.
this whole issue reminds me of that super league saga that happened in the european football world
Woodall isn’t biased or anything. MJ is right, if the sport is going to attract a new audience for television viewing we are going to need to try something new
Waiting for Valencia Marathon vid
You can’t use an Indian athlete cause it’s all Indian followers Michael Johnson’s focussing on worldwide Indian people do not support track and field. They just support this one guy.
Exactly. You know for a fact that if an Indian 100m sprinter came out of nowhere and started doing well then they'd be all over that shit, but realistically they're not interested because none of their people are in it. Your genuine interest in a sport needs to go beyond just your own people and to the sport as a whole, otherwise you're just a fake fan in my opinion
@ 100%
The narrative framing is alarming. Ryan Crouser has only 200k followers, and Chopra is the first medalist in athletics from the most populous country in the world. Field events are less popular, it is what it is. Michael Johnson doesn’t want to save anything; he wants to make money. And like most people who want to make money, he is taking the easiest path.
I think that Grand Slam Track will never get beyond a mildly interesting diversion. Far too small a range of sports, all picked for their suitability for TV schedules above all else.
Field sports are a side show for track. We honestly don't care about them. No one is crying if they are scratched off.
"it doesnt need saving"What we need is more eyes on track and field as a whole...Why is it we only see elite athletes only perform in diamond league and olympics ?
The problem is that young lady does not understand anything. Track and field has the most awkward times and way too many events to get the attention needed for the financial compensation they want. MJ is on the right track because if there's a track event that is schedules for the duration of a football, basketball, NFL, type of game it's going to get more viewership during that period.
truth be told. Track and field needs saving. As fans we forget it's the casuals that grow a sport.
I think, in his younger days, Michael Johnson looked somewhat like Eddie Murphy. And no, this is not George Costanza.
Women's high jump is extremely popular, particularly with male audiences.
Politically incorrect, but there I said it.
Tara was just being a karen like i thought she was. Completly misunderstood the point Michael was tryna make
I think what he’s trying to say in no uncertain terms can be boiled down to “track” and “field”.
Each competitor regardless of the format requires either a lane on a track, or spot on a field. Right there, track athletes require a lane, ON a track. That’s a defined and accounted for space that can accommodate many individuals. A field athlete requires a spot on a field, which depending on the discipline makes multiple athletes simultaneously performing all but impossible. The spectacle isn’t as confined and concentrated. They would have to go one at a time and imagine running a 100m like that. Also, only the very best is a spectacle in field sports, whereas the best competing amongst their peers is expressed amid competition in track. CrossFit is a good demonstration of the space needed and the attention division. Think of a relay race. Imagine when the gun started all 4 legs started running at the same time as a time trial. Who could easily determine which team won that race? I think that’s his point. Imagine watching 5 people high jump, long jump, triple jump or shot put all at once. The Attention division equation can’t be solved is what I think he’s getting at.
Nah field needs to stay in their lane. Track is always where it is at. The Indian dude only reason is because it's indian ppl support indian ppl. I.e. see Bollywood
Listen, if people watch soccer (which takes hours and is boring AF) then they will watch athletics. We don’t need saving. We just need better people involved (ie not Michael Johnson). Much love to the field eventers.
The solución is simple. Just mike in the Olympiques have a géographie team.
Texas aginst California and New York for exsample.
Provide weighted points per event.
I want to see the shot put if it is the last event and he who wins the shot put wins the team title.
Limit the contest to an hour per format with the clock running.
For example 5 throws. Side by side. 20; second between puts with a shot clock. Two teams only can compete.
That is television friendly.
Where you were born determines the team one is on. Pick the number of events on can fit into an hour.
The events each week do not have to be the same but both yeams must compete in the same events.
The net work that has the rights to the broadcast can pick the order of the events.
Which events are chosen any given match is for you and Johnson to figure out Nostradamus.
But unlike the Olympics the contestants need to be, for example Paris vs Berlin. Berlin vs Athens...
The smaller the politicsl unit the better it will be for athletics.
Then we will find out answers to the age old question as to which city or state in any given nation wins.
In addition I would add one combate sport to the mix.
Take a poll of such a format. People will want to see exactly why I propose.
