If you want to see the ‘Greatest Unexpected Rugby Intercept’, you can’t get more unexpected than Matt Dunning for the Waratahs against the Blues. Blues are attacking inside the Waratahs 22. Dunning (a prop) is the last man, and literally the only player on his side of the field. Facing a 5 man overlap and defending a 9v2, he inexplicably manages to intercept a pass from none other than Carlos Spencer and shuts down the attack. The score at the time was 26-19 to Waratahs, who had never beaten the Blues. Waratahs went on to win 35-19. Who would believe that a prop would shut down a 9v2 in his own 22m by intercepting the All Blacks outside half?
