    Jason Newstead is the guy who turned me onto alembic. He used the spoilers, and europa models... he played 4, 5, and 6 string alembic basses extensively throughout the black album era.

      The black and gold 5 string jpj bass was actually an Elan, Europas are slightly different

    I think the "hippy sandwich" actually refers to the body wings. They look more sandwichlike than the neck.

    Great video, but he's confusing the neck and bridge pickups. The bridge pick up is the one that sounds nasal and funky.

    MY GOODNESS! He got the bridge pickup demonstration sound on the FRONT pickup. THEN, the NECK pickup for the BRIDGE pickup!

    Owsley was an Alembic co-founder, but I believe Rick Turner and Ron Wickersham were the real engine behind the basses and active electronics.

    • @alvarhanso6310
      @alvarhanso6310 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @finnmcginn9931 yes, though I had to look it up. He built the Model 1 for Buckingham in 1979, and the headstock is similar to the Alembic design, but otherwise completely different. He apparently also helped create the graphic neck that Modulus became known for. Incredible luthier and engineer!

    I have an oddity of a bass; a neck through Aria Pro II with Alembic pickups and a filter. It's actually a factory model. Alembic had a deal with Aria briefly in the '80s. Just like Status had a deal with Washburn. Used to have one of those too, but sold that a few years back

    The English equivalent of an Alembic would be a WAL bass. They too have the "hippy sandwich" neck laminates (not neck through though) and the passive pickups have a parametric EQ filter system. Beautiful basses both :)

    John Paul Jones also played an Alembic in Led Zeppelin during the latter half of the seventies. Although Jimmy Page's initial reaction to the bass wasn't entirely positive. According to the interview from Geddy Lee's book, Mr. Page's exact words were: "I'm not playing to THAT".
