Interesting symbolism with ferns: they’re one of the most ancient plants still alive. At 300 million years old, they’re so old they actually predate both pollination and the dinosaurs. Which means that their species witnessed and survived a LOT of death and mass extinction events. As countless others died, the ferns lived on
Another thing: ferns reproduce through spores. So if all of the pollinators were to die from a parasite (like the varroa mite, one of the contributors to colony collapse disorder), the ferns would survive as all else decayed
“What is a fern but a memory at best? A wisp from the past who might as well not exist.” “But as I enter the forest of the dead, I’m granted the life that I long ago had led.” …This almost makes me think that Fern wasn’t just a fake persona of the goddess, but…who the goddess was before they attained godhood - or perhaps before they had it forced upon them. They were mortal. Mortals only have to deal with so much responsibility. And from the looks of it, it would’ve been best if they stayed that way…
This feels like a rather deep story... Characters that committed something that cost at least one person (usually way more people) suffering, for completely sympathetic reasons, but can never tell about their past to their new friends lest they are ready to lose them and have them hate them forever... They always break my heart so bad. This is a heavy burden, that everyone loves to pretend they could never have to carry. This shit is the reason why I do not turn away from people who confess some fucked up stuff to me - everyone deserves someone who can at least listen and be a step towards redemption, nobody should just be cast away into obscurity for shit they never can undo but wish they could grow from.
Something I find interesting is she switches between implying her leaving was intentional and not. Especially between the lines “I never meant to leave, trapped in captivity” and “the world abandoned by Fern, who ran away.” I can’t tell if the latter line is meant to be her explaining it based on Cedar’s perspective, her feeling guilty and taking blame despite not feeling like it’s her fault, or that she’s taking partial responsibility where her actions lead to it but it wasn’t her decision. I kinda wonder if disappearing for a millennium wasn’t intentional but she did actually intend to run away for some (probably shorter) period of time in a moment of desperation. Maybe she tried turning her self human and got stuck unable to turn herself back or something IDK. Something about how she’s talking makes it seem more like the fault of a third party though.
this song reminds me of the time 5 years ago when I was walking down my local park and a deer came to me and asked for my help and we ran away together on a mission to dethrone god herself
@@PumpkinHead the hike is a long one; the trail is never-ending. I follow the way the wind blows. I’m there, I’m gone. my faithful companion prances with me with antlers that pierce the sky. One thousand years have passed in such a blur I hardly recall who I am or who you were Soon I'll return to that long-forgotten world With no memory of the wrath that unfurled What is a fern but a memory at best? Just because the text is hard to read along the edges at 1:52, here is the best transcription I can do: (Please comment if I made any mistakes.) When the Goddess first vanished we had complete faith she would return. We were sure she had a plan. Then, more and more years passed, and despite things getting worse and worse, the Goddess never returned. Eventually, even the most faithful of us accepted that our own goddess had abandoned us. It's been one thousand years and we still don't know why she left. I think that it was out of cowardice. Evil threatened our usually peaceful world, and after eons of comfortable peace, the Goddess just couldn't find it in herself to risk her life to protect the people who mattered to her most. Was she just that much of a coward, or did no one ever matter to her at all? She left everyone to die. I hope that she's still alive after all that time just so that the memory of what she's done can continue to haunt her. I hope she's miserable. I hope she wishes she was never born. It's only fair to feel how she made us feel.
I really like the story and also i hope things get better cedar and fern deserve some happy, i dont know why fern left but it really didnt seem like she wanted to leave
Welcome back! I've heard your music in the past, and I can say, they are so good! And I'm happy that you are improving your music too! I love Solaria's tuning. AND YOU INCLUDED ONE OF MY FAV INSTRUMENTS,THE VIOLIN! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND FOLLOW YOUR MUSIC DREAMS!! :D
Thank you so much!! :D The violin is one of my favorite instruments too, so I end up including it in so many of my songs lol. Same with the cello and bassoon!
Hands down the most realistic sounding vocal synth song I've ever heard. I honest to God wouldn't know the singer wasn't real if it wasn't in the title.
3:45 sounds like the end of The Gravedigger’s Fern… this plus another comment I saw plus some word similarities… I think Cedar’s words kinda got to her 😭 She’s giving me elf vibes. Plus the Middle Earth thing… Galadriel in disguise??
I've been listening to this for hours---and I'm being driven crazy by something in the instrumental sort of buried under everything else---it sounds like a bit of New Person Today I can't hear it well but I do love that song so maybe just wishful thinking anyway this song, I love it, you've improved so much and it's so so so amazing
Is it the glitching sounds? I use a VST called Glitch2 and I made a preset for it that I love, and I use that preset in a lot of my songs :P Idk for sure if I used that preset in New Person Today but it's fairly likely I did lol
Was Fern captured by the evil forces mentioned in the text then given some kind of curse similar to the prophet cassandra where no one would believe her when she told them she was captured?

One thousand years have passed in such a blur

Soon I'll return to that long-forgotten world
With no memory of the wrath that unfurled
What is a fern but a memory at best?
A wisp from the past who might as well not exist
But as I enter the forest of the dead
I'm granted the life that I long ago had led
I woke up in a world familiar
And laid my eyes on the deer I left here
Hello sir, my name is Fern
I am from middle Earth
I don't know where I am
Please sir help me if you can
I missed you so dearly,
But you don't know it's me
You took me by the hand
And to my past I ran
Something is nice about being just a girl
And not a goddess meant to save a broken world
This world is dead because I abandoned it
And no one would trust any answer I give
I see the glint of suspicion in your eyes
A grim reminder that I live on borrowed time
I know that I sit upon a throne of lies
But if I confess, then I'll lose all that's mine
I can't hide from the truth forever
I want to show you that I would never
Leave you to suffer and hide in comfort
I'll prove myself, or my name's not-
…
Even as the forest falls, I am bound to you all
I'll never leave again, I'll fight 'til the bitter end
I never meant to leave, trapped in captivity
You don't believe a word, my pain won't be heard
Feel the guilt of a kingdom in decay
A world abandoned by Fern who ran away
Cedar trust me, it's not what I wanted
Please understand that I am cursed to hide the truth
