As a safety professional, I totally agree with your comments and that the legislation has not caught up with modern technology. Well said, you will more support on this than you think.
But where to you draw the line? An agricultural tractor built 100 years ago is designated the same as one built today. HSE would class them both under the umbrella of agricultural machines even though the more modern ones are probably safer than some of the 10-15 year old cars on the roads today. Surprisingly the law isn’t as archaic as I thought and was actually revised in 1998…
@@2626stephen I agree with you there it’s common sense but HSE rules are very black and white with no definition between modern tractors with enclosed cabs, buddie seats and seat belts and open platform tractors with just a roll bar or canopy roof. Just done a quick google and there’s no actual age restrictions on pillion passengers on a motorbike…I know I’d feel safer with my child in a tractor cab than hanging on to the back of a performance motorbike!
A child interested in machinery is Safer inside the tractor Especially when not from a farming background ,Excellent comments ,Obviously the Grandad had 100% Safety and made a good job of looking after
Had days where child care was an issue but work was still to do. Getting the work done with my son with me, him enjoying his day, creating memories and him learning is well worth it. It needs bringing up to date.
35years ago as a 5 year old sat on the toolbox seat of my dads international 955 whilst he baled straw/ploughed fields was without doubt one of the best memories of my life. And not only planted the seed of agriculture in my head but made me and my father as close as we are today. Its a silly law
hi Olly when i was a kid my parents had a static caravan on a farm between Knighton and Clun i would help on the farm and ride on the mudguard of a david brown 880 and on top of trailer loads of bails also the first thing i drove was a 20 ton loading shovel by the age of ten i could load lorries on my own, both my daughters and my son could drive my LandRover before they were ten in fact my son being taller was seven and he could use my chainsaw and shoot my shotgun by the time he reached ten
Things in Britain are badly wrong. Politicians are mad & bad. Food production is being hammered to satisfy food importers under the excuse of the green agenda. Farmers are persecuted for training up their youngsters. Over 60 y ago I learned to drive both a tractor & a land-rover at 12. Good life skills that have served me well. My cousin was killed walking on the road outside the farm at 14. Where is the sense in any of that?
101 percent right Olly, much better kids be in the cab where they are safe, what's more it's one of the best classrooms for the children who are interested enough to go for a ride in there
Must agree kids in tractors must be 1 of the safest places for them to be.. and having grown up sitting on a wheel arch of a tractor myself I must say it's the best memory's....
Your right Olly . Kids are safer where you can see them . They learn more of the way of the yard if they are more involved with it. I started driving at 9 year old picking stones in an empty field where not much could go wrong ..
Olly - having grown up.on a farm and worked at a senior level in health and safety for over 35 years which includes 15 years at HSE as an inspector - I 100% agree modern cabs with buddy seats and restraint belts are a world away from the days of old. I have been involved in investigation of fatalities including a handful of devastating child fatalities on farms - they were a world away from where we are now. FYI the regulations apply going to or from or during 'an agricultural operation' - a decent lawyer would argue 'giving rides' is not that.... This needs modernising. The regulations date back to times when we didn't have to wear seat belts or be in child seats and we could ride around with 5 of us on the back seat of a Ford sorting estate.
I completely agree with you children and vulnerable people are safer in the cab where the driver knows exactly where they are. If my kids were ever on the yard, they would go in the cab safe and sound.
TOTALLY agree Olly, I've already made your exact point on Joe's channel You are not wrong, children live on farms, safer in the circumstances you explained, cab, buddy seat with seat belts. Please keep campaigning to overturn this outdated n jobsworth law
Hi Olly Another excellent video & I totally agree with your points regarding children. I’m not a farmer but I am a father & grandfather and I know I would be much happier with them learning in a safe environment like the cab of one of your new modern tractors sat in a seat with a belt on rather than walking round the farm. It’s time the law was updated- yet another example of how the law & reality are so far apart. I think you all do an amazing job under the circumstances EVERYONE MUST BEGIN TO SUPPORT OUR FARMERS WE / OUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU Thanks again Olly Alan
Your right about children in tractors i was with my uncle from about 1 year old he drove with me in the tractors with him and i learned all the controls just by watching him and was driving by 7 years old reversing trailers aswell by the age of 14 i was driving my dads bosses jcb fastrac with a 16 ton cart carting silage
100% agree with you!! I was a kid and sat in cabs with no seats stood on drawbars or the arms of the tractor and loved it 😂 surely if a child is in a safe cab with a seatbelt they must be safer than I was 🤷🏼
Totally agree with you ollie. I had a bollocking 36 yrs ago. I had my daughter in a proper car seat in a ford 7610. I explained same as you have said, and was told to take the seat out or be fined
Totally agree with you Olly, children are safer in the cab where you can see them. I sat with my dad for hours and hours when I was a kid and my son the same, its a place of education for the future. Also you spend time with your family in busy times.
Totally agree with you, about kids on tractors I grew up on the farm, spent hours and hours in the tractor/combine harvester. Started driving when I was 5 or 6 . Best memories from my childhood, helping out on the farm 🚜 but I was made fully aware about what to do/not to do whilst being around machinery, how to stay safe
100% right Olly I do a bit of mowing and topping for a friend of mine and some of the fields are very close to houses and sometimes they are kids standing on their fences looking at me. I will stop and ask them to go inside or ask you're parents if they can sit up with me which I have no problem with. We all know what speeds mower blades go at and if it hits the wrong thing it becomes a missile simple fact. Even if I'm mowing the lawn I prefer if the child is on my lap rather than looking at me from a distance.
Non farmer here, but having sat through more site induction and safety meetings than I care to think about, I completely agree with your comments. Children have to learn what is and isn't safe and there's no better way than being with a responsible adult and I fail to see how a modern tractor with a passenger seat and belt could be regarded as unsafe, they're at less risk in the tractor than cycling down the road to school.
Grew up helping the small holding up the road from mum n dads, spent many an hour on the wheel arch of a fordson major or a dexter or on a hay trailor helping stack bales.
Hi Olly, Totally agree with you re kids on tractors, if they are in the cab you know where they are. I was on the farm at age 6, no cabs and still survived, you learnt very quickly about the dangers, kids today don't have that experience until much older. Great videos. Thanks Simon
You are so right on the tractor theme! I used to ride on a Massey 135 in the sixties, once my legs were long enough I drove it, I was taught to drive a combine at nine. Such a shame that children can not experience what we did & in much safer enviroments.
I remember fiddling with my dad on the side of our fordson diesel major in the 70s and I can see the case for the law but for cabs like that one the law needs updating 👏👏👏👏
Im in agreement Olly , i take my nipper with in the cab in sight all the time , i feel its far safer for them to be in the cab when implements are in use around the yard even the livestock...safer in the cab , this needs changing , 3.5k is also rather large fine for what they charged him with shouldn't even be a charge
You are 100% correct about kids in tractors ,they would be safer in a tractor with a seat than outside, the law needs changing for the modern tractors .
Totally agree with you Olly, modern day trucks and tractors have come a long way so the law makers need to review legislation. Excellent job once again thanks for sharing and take care.
100 % right about kids on farms Ollie. I was always happy when my kids were in the tractor, as i knew where they were. Before seats, I ratchet strapped a car seat in the cab. Safe and sound all day. Laws need reviewing as soon as possible.
You are 110% correct Olly the law needs changing as sitting in a tractor is the safest place for a child to be, one way to look at it is modern tractors are much safer than very old cars that children are allowed to ride in that don't have isofix or proper seat belts, how does that make any sense. Please make sure you always speak your mind when you have the chance on such important issues.
Totally agree on the safety aspect of kids being safer in a cab, Ollie. There is also the 10 or more years experience they aren't gaining on how the various pieces of equipment work.
Just watching this video quite late, I had no idea it was illegal for a child under 13 to ride in a tractor. Some of my best memories are of me & my two younger sisters riding in the same tractor cab as our Dad, & he changed career when I was 14.
Totally agree, my dad was told years ago that us kids shouldn't be in the yard but in the garden, dad replied I would rather be looking out for them all the time rather than not expecting them to be there,
I totally agree with you it's an outdated law which should be tweeked, also the children of farming families are the future of the industry and should be involved to spark their intrest in running the farms for the future. Also from my experience it was the only time i got to spend with my dad at busy time's and I'd not change that for anything
I agree with you that there better in the tractor than outside and if they were in the tractor and were told to stay in the cab they wouldn’t be as many injuries as there not wondering around the yard
Totally agree about kids in tractors, there are going to be a lot more hurt in the future as they are not allowed to learn anything anymore, I used to work on a farm when I was 10 to get some pocket money, I would sweep floors help muck, out sheds
Here in saskatchewan we regularly see young children and babies in tractor s and combines, as farms are so big and isolated mums often drive the combines or swather and tractor so youngsters go with them . I think you are dead oʻn with the tractor thing their safer inside than outside.
%100 agree with your comments on kids in the cab when I was taught to plough my instructor was sitting on the mud guard giving instructions but nowadays the best place for kids and possibly the safest is in the cab in sight sitting next to you and away from blind spots and the wheels
I watched a 10 yr old boy running a massive combine in the USA harvesting corn he was amazing so 100% behind your comments I loved riding in tractors and in the trailers when I was a kid long time ago
Happy to be a lone voice here. Yes, plenty of people had halcyon days sitting on the mud-guard of an olf MF165 etc, and when everything is going well then the instructor seat in a modern tractor is a very safe place to be. However - what happens if something goes wrong? The operator has to get out of the cab? That is where the danger lies - how can you guarantee that a 9 year old won't press the PTO button? How easy is it to knock the tractor / combine into drive? There is a reason that agriculture has the highest injury rate amongst industries. A farm is basically a modified building site / manufacturing plant and children are not allowed there for a reason.
Would agree with having the kids in the cab. You at least know where they are and they are learning about the farm environment as well. As you said kids live on the farm
I think you’re right i if I’ve got any of our kids in the cab there on a proper seat with the seat belt on. Only thing that doesn’t have a belt is the combine. Evie wardle on the birthday bumper is well chuffed ❤
Totally agree with you olly my son is tractor daft and the safest place for him is sitting beside me. They can also learn more about safety sitting beside you asking questions
Fully agree with you on the children in tractors. They are such sponges at that age and as you say you can explain the dangers and what’s going on so they have an understanding. I spent many years at my dads factory over the holidays, whilst different there were plenty on dangerous machines all of which were explained and shown safe operation even without using them. No need for the apology about yesterdays vid, it’s great to see you manage some downtime with the family and we are greatful that you allow us into your private life not just your working life.
⭐️Olly❤️ 100% agree about children riding in tractors. When was the last time a child was hurt on farm HSE when riding in a tractor? Most accidents happen when out and about. In the cab you know where they are at all times 👍 sad you didn’t receive any support when raising your point during the meeting. People need to back people up publicly if they believe in what’s being said 💪
Agree with you totally machinery has improved a lot in last 20 or 30 years. It is safer to have your children strapped in the seat in the cab were you know where they are and also machines have got bigger so it’s one less thing to be looking out for.
Well said Olly about children riding in tractors they are safer inside than out ...been down to see a farmer friend tonight and he's stubble fields where covered with crow's and there's a lot of foxes around this year..😀😀😎😎50%..
Olly, I used to be in a tractor from an early age, used to love travelling in a link box as well, if it’s got a cab on them that is the safest place to be as no one ever got ran over in a driving or passenger seat
I'm shocked that kids can't ride in tractors in the UK. I'm in the US and I grew up riding on the fenders of tractors or sitting on the lap of my dad or uncles. Like you said, modern tractors are so safe and accommodating to passengers.
Quite agree with you Olly 👍🏻 the law is out of date and needs improvement. Farm parents know the dangers and will not subject their children to unnecessary risk. However, unfortunately common sense is not so common any more. Especially since COVID- although it happened before then, it wasn’t as apparent - we as a nation are unable to assess our own risk. They warn us when it’s hot……in summer 🤷🏼♂️ They warn us when it’s cold…..in winter They warn us when it’s going to rain……in the Uk 🇬🇧 🤦🏼♂️ Yes as I commented yesterday, it was a thoroughly enjoyable video, thanks for sharing your day out with us all.
I always carried my son on the tractor beside me here in Ireland as I deemed it safer than walking under the wheels. when in cab I could see him all the time
I'm a 100% in agreement with you. Safest place is on the tractor rather than in a blind spot of the tractor. Also best place to teach them about the dangers on a farm yard.
Olly you are so correct about the tractor safety, and I did see the story about the farmer who got fined. I had the family here on the farm, and there was kids and they all want to see the tractor and go for a drive, but I just got off the subject before argument, as they would not understand that I am not allowed to.🤔
Totally agree with having children in the cab with you. Definitely the safest place to be on the farm. Obviously there are times when common sense tells you it would be too dangerous on certain jobs but the law definately needs updating.
I agree with you i was in the scouts and we stayed on the farm and we drove in the cab and on the back of the trailer the wold has gone made about heath and safety if the kid is in the cab with a seat belt on is definitely more safer then than he or she walking around the yard
I totally agree with you, most farm kids under 13 do it anyway, most of them drive aswell. But 100 percent agree with your point dangers need to be taught to children
I think you have a valid point Ollie especially on newer tractors. But at the same time you can see it from hse point of view if they are just looking at the stats. Tricky topic.
I’m gonna add to the comments as although it’s basically the same as the above, someone needs to see all these comments almost as a petition because children growing up around farms/in the yard isn’t in itself an issue it’s the fact that they dart around all over the place as kids do and most likely because they want to see what’s going on because of their interest in it. Rather than banishing them to the house (or the iPad/tv etc) because a silly law says you can’t have them in the cab most definitely needs updating. Echoing above, they’re safer in the cab with you, with a seatbelt on being educated rather than from a far with more potential dangers around. Love the video as always Olly. Always watch sat in the tractor when I get 5 (on a construction site.. i knoooow 🙄) nice to see a bit of family time yesterday. We all need it! Keep up the sterling work and all the team with you. Team work makes the dream work.
another top video with a great topic agree 110% with you surely it should be all about farm safety for your kids not about how much a fine can be. kids on farms are always in danger but it’s about limiting that danger to a minimum, keeping them close is always best. 85% today.
💯 agree with you on the children in the cab Olly I have both of my boys in the cab when I’m doing stuff on my small holding as I know where they are and I know they are safe, Having said that there’s always going to accidents of some sort or other that is life I’m afraid.
Olly, farming needs voices like yourself and with your reach to speak up regarding and stupid dates laws. Being on a farm is incredibly dangerous. However teaching is the key not laws. Your videos are brilliant and forever speak the commonsense 👊🏿👍🏿👌🏿

At 11 years old I was put in a field on an old grey fergie chain harrowing left alone happiest days ever did me good to learn how to work young
Totally agree with you olly my son is tractor daft and the safest place for him is sitting beside me. They can also learn more about safety sitting beside you asking questions
Totally agree with you as youngsters we would stand on the pto guard mad when you think about it now!!
People need to back people up publicly if they believe in what’s being said 💪
Hi Olly Nice One got to be safer children sat in the tractor probably the most time I spent with Dad was out on the farm Thanks again
I think your right it dose needs updating there more save in a modern tractor and learn more be in a tractor of were they can be seen .
Looked at a Lindner tractor at lamma a few years ago. One of the options was a child seat for the cab but not for the UK market.
I'm shocked that kids can't ride in tractors in the UK. I'm in the US and I grew up riding on the fenders of tractors or sitting on the lap of my dad or uncles. Like you said, modern tractors are so safe and accommodating to passengers.
Quite agree with you Olly 👍🏻
the law is out of date and needs improvement.
Farm parents know the dangers and will not subject their children to unnecessary risk.
However, unfortunately common sense is not so common any more.
Especially since COVID- although it happened before then, it wasn’t as apparent - we as a nation are unable to assess our own risk.
They warn us when it’s hot……in summer 🤷🏼♂️
They warn us when it’s cold…..in winter
They warn us when it’s going to rain……in the Uk 🇬🇧 🤦🏼♂️
Yes as I commented yesterday, it was a thoroughly enjoyable video, thanks for sharing your day out with us all.
I always carried my son on the tractor beside me here in Ireland as I deemed it safer than walking under the wheels. when in cab I could see him all the time
Nice video olly we have all done it I've had my children ride with me when they were younger and friends children also, it's a tricky one. 90% today
I don't remember Olly harvesting so many acres, I've been watching since the beginning
I'm a 100% in agreement with you. Safest place is on the tractor rather than in a blind spot of the tractor. Also best place to teach them about the dangers on a farm yard.
Totally agree with you it’s an outdated law the safest place for a child is next to you on the passenger seat where you know exactly where they are
Olly you are so correct about the tractor safety, and I did see the story about the farmer who got fined.
My brother and i where under 10 sitting seats on the 323 beeng told to be care full and had a great time in the Netherlands.
Totally agree. Safer to have a child in the tractor rather than outside!
ur 100% correct re. kids in modern cabs
Yes Olly I agree with you. Farm based children are safer in the cab then under the wheels. Thank you and take care.
Fair play Olly, like you said they live on these farms. I think the amount of the fine is daft
another top video with a great topic
agree 110% with you surely it should be all about farm safety for your kids not about how much a fine can be.
kids on farms are always in danger but it’s about limiting that danger to a minimum, keeping them close is always best. 85% today.
Great video children should be in the cab great video
💯 we know they're safe sat with us in the cab, it's an old law which needs updating!
Totally agree with your comment about children in tractor cabs with seat belt on, no different to being in a car, probably much safer in my opinion!.
Totally agree, at least you know where they are safety wise.
You are 100% correct, children are safer to be on the tractor nowadays. And it helps them learn not only this dangers but the skills of farming too.
Well put Ollie the law needs to come up to date . Far easier to help children learn the dangers
