- Now that the Electribe 2 came out, many people describe the drum sounds of the EMX as flat or static but I think they are a great source for sound design. In fact the whole machine is. Please take a moment to listen to what I dialed up here. ;)
You could never get bored of this instrument, its better than any of the crap on the market today.
Synthematix the best 350 quid I spent in a long time.. I'm slowly getting my way around it but loved it since the day I got it last month
Theyre amazing mate, i had its brother the red ESX-1 and i stupidly sold it.
that red one sells for like 700 bucks on the used market here. whereas the electribe 2 sells for 200. wake up, korg. 😔
Nice! Always good to watch your tutorials - never know what tricks still lurk in the trusty ol' EMX and you sure can bring them out and show us new things. Thanks!
+bluemonster65 Thanks a lot bluemonster! You've got it in your name! ;)
:)
Great tutorial! This further reinforces my decision on copping an EMX1 vs. the Electribe 2 and even the Volca FM...Thanks again brother!
Dave Simon Chua Good choice! Thanks for watching! :)
thanks for this.
i just purchased an emx today to replace my em-1. can't wait to get my hands on it!
krap art It's a great machine! Wishing you lots of fun with it! :)
Amazing demonstrations for a great style! Thanks a lot, it’s been very much inspiring.
Thanks a lot for the nice comment!
Man that's awesome!! : )
I've had an EMX for years, but still use it in a fairly basic way, please keep making these tutorials man, there great : )
Jay
GoonieBushcraft Thanks! :) Yes, I'll be posting more videos on the EMX pretty soon..
Absolutely amazing!! Really brilliant demo, and cool track. I would never have guessed the EMX could do a sound like that (on the synth part 3) !
+Arrayzable I found that the LFO on the pitch is good for so many cool things, really worth testing out on different waves. Thanks for the nice response! :)
LousyFacelift I'll better do some experimenting then :)
cool, I tried the kick-and-snare trick on the E2 and it works, really fun to play - with different kicks you get different "snares" and combined with mod-delay you get almost full arrangement out of 1 track!
mishpult Good to hear it works on the E2 as well. Thanks for the comment! :)
thank you man, really great vids here!
Hi I bought a 505 after watching your vids now have just bought an emx 😃
Tony Davidson They are both excellent machines. The EMX is a bit easier to use but at some point you may want some more detailed sequencing and sound design so that's when the MC-505 comes in to play.
Great vid. I really like the sound of your 6B drum part too.
Thank you!
sold my Electribe 2, i honestly prefer the EMX.
the same ;)
Awesome bro... THANKS FOR the video... it's my style of beats....
Thanks a lot for the nice response! Much appreciated!
Wow... did NOT expect a reply.. keep up the good work!!!!!
Excellent tutorial! Great beat too.
Thanks for the nice comment! :)
Wow, great tutorial for a wonderful song.
Could barely say it's an old Electribe playing.
Thank you! :) It's such a great machine, still my favorite instrument.
very, very unique sounds! great job!
sehr schön! sehr schön! und inspirierend!
Danke für das positive Feedback! Das freut mich sehr! :)
thanks for doing this! thumps up
My pleasure! Thank you Nils! :)
Hey man nice video I wanted to ask you how do I shut off the drum part from also being a note trigger for my external synth I just want to hear the drums not the drums and synth notes I would rather control the synth from the synth part
Reply
shotzfire The EMX can either send MIDI note messages on all or none of its channels (synths and drums). There is no way to activate MIDI transmission for the synth parts while deactivating the drum channel. Default setting for the channels is 10 for the drum part and 1-5 for the synth parts. This can be changed to different channel numbers. You could also change the note numbers for each of the drum sounds if you want to keep channel 10 but trigger different notes. Maybe there is a way to deactivate MIDI reception on channel 10 of the external unit, that would be the easiest solution.
I've found that whenever I start a pattern the oscillator will be in a different position every time, making it impossible to have wobbles in time every time I hit play
+Sam Gordon I think this happens when the LFO is set to triangle. You can probably fix this by using the LFO set to saw wave with tempo sync activated.
+LousyFacelift thanks a lot, I didn't even consider using a different wave type haha. Love the emx tutorials, keep them up
Sam Gordon
Very nice of you, thanks a lot! :)
Very nice tutorial. Can you auotmate by pushing a step of a part and tweak the paramter when recording ? Like a paramter lock on the electrons or you have to play and record and tweak while it's recording ?
Luc Debeck You can record knob movements while recording but you have to use a seperate mode if you want to check on the exact values (0-127) for each step and each parameter that has been recorded. The Elektron concept is a lot easier to use in this regard.
thanks for the response. Another small question: can the EMX do the same as elctribe ER-1 when changing paramters ?. I saw some video's of the ER-1 that can do wild thinks. Can EMX reach the same kind of sounds or is it not possible ?
Luc Debeck The ER-1 is a dedicated drum synthesizer with a different sound character but all in all the EMX is a lot more advanced, it really is a full workstation with many many more sound shaping options, it also contains some great drum sounds like 808 and 909 in the form of PCM waves, five great synth parts on top of the drum tracks and eight bar patterns instead of the four on the ER, three effects, two additional outputs, mono input, valves give it some analog-type flavor... It can do a whole lot more than the ER. It's my favorite machine, I love this thing. :)
Luc Debeck All in all the EMX can do a whole lot more than the ER, so I'm pretty sure if you found the ER impressive, the EMX will make you go nuts... ;) Honestly - it's a lot more powerful!
yes, you are right I've got the EMX today and it sounds really nice I tried also the motion sequence and it does almost the same as elektron rytm. I will look at your other video tutorials. great stuff :)
Nice tutorial, gonna watch it when I get to my newly purchased second hand EMX. Still rocking with yours?
Count TheMoney Oh yes, absolutely and still one of my favorite machines! It even seems to gain value over time if you look at the prices. Good choice, wish you lots of fun with it!
Hi I love you're tutorials,I was wondering if you had a Bastl Microgranny ? I'm trying to control it with my EMX via midi,I can get it to play single samples but I can't work out how to play other samples in a sequence, the manual says the six buttons should correspond to the first 6 notes of the lowest midi octave on the keyboard , do you think this will work on the EMX ? any ideas would be appreciated..
Don't worry I've sussed it with some help from a friend,I had to assign the drum parts note numbers... I.E. drum part 1 C-1 ,part 2 C#-1 ,part 3 D-1 and so on as per page 80 of the manual ,these being the lowest midi octaves and so corresponding to the six sample buttons on the Microgranny ,so i can now trigger the samples with the drum parts in a sequence...Phew thank god for that it's taken me hours ha ha..
Keep doing the great tutorials ,you've taught me loads... thanks..
Rupert Halsey Good to hear you worked things out and many thanks for the nice comment! :)
:O amazing!! thanks for the tips !!!
Raffaele Roma My pleasure, thanks for watching! :)
Great Stuff! I love my EMX. One thing I cant get my head around is changing pitch for drum parts in step rec... did you cover this in one of your tutorials?
I made a video on step edits but not fot that particular function. Select the drum part you wish to edit, then press step edit, (not step record). In the Motion Destination window hold the shift key above the keyboard down and turn the value dial until pitch is shown in the display. Enter parameter values for the blinking steps after selecting the Motion Value window and make sure the Motion Sequence button is lit either for Smooth or Trigger Hold.
Thank you so much for your replay! Going to try it ASAP!
I saw that one. But I don't think it's the same when doing it with traktor. or is it?
I tried and got it somewhat right. Either way. Thank you for the vids and your reply.
+Fred Rich Hi! I don't use software but I think the concept should be the same.
For God's sake, when is Korg gonna bring back a new version of this?
Laura Woodswalker Yes, seems like the E2 is really a completely different concept. If they made a nice synth/sampler combination just like the EMX, added one or two polyphonic parts and a better sequencer with combinable scales and last step per track, that would be an amazing machine.
I dont understand why there isn't anything comparable on the market. Maybe the elektron analog rytm but that thing is 2-4 times as much.
Yes, it is quite a unique concept, mainly the valves set it apart from anything else. There is the Electribe 2 synth and sampler of course but that never really caught my interest so much. The closest comparison to Elektron boxes is probably the Monomachine. The Roland MC grooveboxes are well worth looking into in my opinion, they have far better sequencers and sound editing functions (at least in the 307, 505, 707 and 909). The Yamaha RS-7000 also seems quite nice as an "all in one" unit.
@@LousyFacelift Yeah the new ones lack a lot of the energy those devices have. But imho there's no sense in crying over spilled milk, so my current plan is saving up for an analog distortion and one of the newer, more expensive boxes. (Most likely the synthstrom deluge for the tasty 64 voice polyphony)The TR-8S I currently own has some decent soundbuilding capabilities as well so you I'll find workarounds to most sounds, but doing precise melodic parts is tricky as hell.
So building up a hardware fx chain(or getting the analog heat) and a synth & sample setup at least saves me from all the issues that can arrise with older gear.
Im still hoping for ssomeone to make a proper live groovebox with integrated tubes again some day.
@@LucIndustries Have you thought about the MC-707? It!s what I'll be getting next. I believe it has 128 voice polyphony, plenty of fx, crazy sound editing features and up to two stereo audio ins plus 64 MB of sampling. Seems like the perfect companion to the TR8S, no? 🤔
@@LousyFacelift I have the zencore engine is really well done but I've decided to go for the Deluge asap since thats what my gut is telling me to get.
But I do admit that the Mc-707 looks very sexy as well... Its why Im trying to buy the other one sooner rather than later, otherwise I'll find too much cool shit that'll make my desicion harder...
@@LucIndustries Well the Deluge is certainly not a bad choice either, I hear many good things about it! If I didn't already have the MPC Live I would probably consider it, too. And the Live is no joke either, just like the Deluge it's more of a DAW concept and Akai are constantly improving it which is quite amazing! Anyway good luck with the decision and have fun!
i have play with the same fx chain.. i just change the bpm delay to short delay and i've remake bass of EXpanse from Plastikman automation to the delay time i really enjoy this korg emx !!! xD

Super! Genial!
Das freut mich, vielen Dank! :)
quick question, is it possible to control the volume of each individual drum sound or various synth parts like track volumes I guess or something similar or is everything predetermined in that way?
argiletonne You can control the level of each part in realtime or you could also automate it.
I sold mine back in 2009 like an asshole. Been kicking myself in the ass ever since. I bought one used for damn near full price and it HAD knob jitter. Let's face it, these hold their value, so i just took it apart and cleaned it. It works like a dream. Dude uses a bran new pic and what i got was less than acceptable. He got negative feedback as fuck. Fucking Ebay 😤
Bought mine brand new in 2009 and had to have it repaired twice right after I got it. First time it came back I tested it in the shop, noticed value jitters in the main dial and left it right there for them to send it back again. It was a long wait before I could finally start using it.
@@LousyFacelift that sounds absolutely disappointing. That saying if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. Never rang truer than when it comes to having to get anything fixed! When my transmission blew, I did it myself. When it blew up again, I did it myself again with a better transmission this time not used. When I got the korg in the mail, I wanted to send it back, but I wanted to use it so fucking bad that I just learned how to fix it myself. My next step is to learn how to solder, and then order replacement parts even though I don't need them right now. I will be using this thing every day of my life for at least 5 hours straight. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with it right off the rip, nobody should have to get something repaired right out of the box. I got this thing about 2 weeks ago.
Wish you lots of fun with your EMX! It's all in the step edits with this thing, at least for me. People who come from other workstations think more in a way of creating a sound or selecting a preset and use it like it is but with the Electribe you constantly adjust the sound to fit the pattern and get to much better results this way. I learned so much from using it but you also become aware of its limitatuons which is a great part of the learning process. There are workarounds for many of its short comings.
dude you're awesome. how about midi worth another device. like Traktor. synced
+Fred Rich Thanks a lot! :) I made another video called Korg Electribe MIDI sync setup. It explains the MIDI filter settings on the EMX and how to sync it with an ESX.
+LousyFacelift
thanks. I'll keep at it
cool
Thanks! :)
This device sounds 'sharper than it looks'...
This one has THREE effect sends??? The E2 i bought only has one and that's an on/off stupid master effect... the per part delays are only mono and eat voices ... gah >.<
Buyer remorse!
The EMX-1 has three effects (sixteen types each) shared by all parts whereas the E2 has a larger selection of insert effects with one dedicated for each part plus one master effect. All in all I think this makes the E2 a bit more advanced effects-wise but this voice issue seems to be quite bad. They are two completely different instruments that just happen to wear the same name.
Hey LousyFacelift, I made video trying to replicate the same trick on the E2 - you can check the result here! th-cam.com/video/j_D4lGjLI44/w-d-xo.html I credited you in the description as well. Cheers and thanks for the nice vids!
