The ESV Student Study Bible is a good middle ground between the standard ESVSB and the ESV Concise SB. One of my go-to tests to see whether a study Bible is trying too hard to be a one-volume commentary is the first page of Genesis. If the book can't fit at least five verses on that first page, it's going overboard. If it can fit the bulk of Genesis 1 on the first page, then it's too light. The ESVSB has a paltry two verses, the Student SB has 8 1/2 verses, and the Concise SB has 23 verses.
THIS is crazy!!!! I have that Bible too, and 5 Schuyler bibles and I keep going back to this one because of the size!!!! It is so wild that you have ALL those bibles to choose from, as do I, and we keep going back to the cheap one because it truly has the best size 😊 Thank you for the reviews of bibles… they are very informative!
I looked at the NET full notes and really disliked the layout. I bought an electronic copy with full notes, and I use the notes all the time while reading ESV, CSB, and LSB. I admit I do not care for the NET text, but the notes are awesome. I wish I could buy a hard copy of the NET notes only as a one volume commentary.

I will be the different one here. For my physical Study Bible, I love the Open Bible (KJV, NKJV, NIV). It only has around 120 short notes on basic topics - but has NO exegetical notes. It also has an extensive topical index. It helps me to dig into the Scriptures for myself, without relying on someone else’s thoughts and explanations. When I want or need explanation, I consult the notes in my digital Study Bibles. (The older I get, the harder it is to read the notes in a physical Study Bible)
I’m fascinated by the Cultural Backgrounds Bible since I’m studying the history of Israel during the divided kingdoms before the exile & the corresponding prophets this year. Thanks for this good information. ❤️
I love my cultural backgrounds study Bible. I also have the ESV archeology, NIV archaeological, and CSB Holy Land and the cultural backgrounds in NKJV is my favorite. In addition to all the awesome content I love the red shiny hardcover.

I would absolutely love to see it in a two volume set (premium or otherwise) with a reference Bible as one volume and the study notes in the other. It would be great to take the reference Bible as a daily carry, and be able to leave the notes at home.
For the pentecostal,folk, I highly recommend the KJV Life in the Spirit Study Bible, its counterpart MEV Fire Bible, and Jack Hayford's NKJV Spirit Filled Life Study Bible.
I just wanted to mention Thomas Nelson’s KJV Study Bible: Full Color Edition and their NKJV Study Bible: Full Color Edition study Bibles. Both are excellent with an appealing format and lots of color and visual appeal and surprisingly they have different study notes.

I have tons of Bibles/study Bibles but the 2 I've reached for the most I think are Life in the Spirit and Nelson NKJV Complete Study System -- Life in the Spirit is now fire Bible but I like the format better in the other and NKJV is now Nelson NKJV Study Bible. ESV study Bible I use but it's a chunk and a TON of info - usually more info than I can absorb LOL!
what are the thoughts on the Reformation Study Bible?.. there are a ton of less popular ones out there such as The Rock Of Ages the Ryrie The Dake's the Scofield the Open Bible Criswell Bible Believer's Study Bible Ruckman Bible Common Man's Falwell's Farstad's and countless others... how does one decide when so many of these have very good notes...? just some ..more notes than others... oh yes.. can't forget John MacArthur.... the list is too vast to mention all of them..
isn't the N.E.T. bible by default a study bible already?.. I do not care for the Full Notes edition as this was a let down for me since it was in single column text... UGH... If I was using it to preach from... OK .. but for normal reading?.. the double column... I have found the N.E.T. bible with its 59,000 + notes has way more notes in it as it stands than many of these so called study bibles that are out there already...I use the N.E.T... when I want to read a passage with a dofferent take on it.. since the N.E.T.. pretty much is a stand alone translation on it's own..

No I don't like zondervan Thompson chain-reference King James Bible they take things out that we liked in the Thompsons chain it's not the same, if anybody out there listening don't by zondervan by the original Thompson chain-reference Bible it's much better to buy the old version at least the 4th edition or 5th edition but anything else it's a zondervan and I wouldn't buy a zondervan Bible.
The Old Scofield always gets forgotten-and yet there’s a reason it’s still in print a century later when hundreds of other study Bibles have come and gone!
The reason I ask is because after zondervan bought Thompson's chain they took out things and added things they ruined the Thompsons chain-reference Bible.
@Vicki H You can, but if the passage is translated poorly, then everything that follows from it will be affected. But hey, the NLT is better than its predecessor, The Living Bible, which really isn't even a translation. It's a paraphrase. I actually have an NLT Life Application Study Bible in my collection, but I wouldn't recommend it as a primary, or even secondary, study bible due to the weakness of the translation.
@Vicki H I apologize if I came across as condescending. That certainly wasn't my intention. I do think that the NLT is an objectively bad translation, though. It's pretty clear to me that you and I aren't coming from the same place on this subject, so let's just agree to disagree.
I love the NLT Application Study Bible. NLT is a legitimate translation as 90 bible scholars worked on the it. It is NOT a paraphrase like 'The Message'.

I’m a visual learner and love when I can listen to a (non-dramatized) version of Scripture as I read along. I can speed up the time, and it helps with learning names of people and places.

Absolutely agree, Anthony. The Fire Bible is by far my favorite study Bible. It has a Biblical, balanced Pentecostal commentary.

The LASB should have been mentioned... I know soooooo many people who love it.
The Life Application Study Bible changed my life, however at this point in life and us only having time to share two each it’s not at the top for me.

The NLT is too far on the dynamic equivalence end of the translation spectrum to work well as a study bible.
