@@asmatumi294 In the half equation, 1 mole of MnO4- accepts 5 moles of electrons, and since there are 0.001 moles of MnO4- , there should be a transfer of 0.005 moles of electrons. We also have 0.005 moles of X, so the ratio of electron transfer to moles of X is 1:1. Therefore, each atom of X must have gained 1 electron (since 0.005 moles of X are involved and 0.005 moles of X are transferred). The original oxidation state of X is +5 and one electron is gained to reduce it, so the final oxidation state is (5-1) = 4 so +4 oxidation state.
