We were taught this in 4th grade and I think that was an awesome decision for so many reasons! It ties in jazz history, rhythm, rhyme schemes, song structure, and just an amazing feeling of appreciation for music.
Used to listen to this a lot when I was at Camp Pendelton when I was in the Marine Corps. I was considered an "Honorary Soul Brother" by the Dark Green Marines in my Company, because I didn't have a shit bag of things against them. This song told me that music could bring us together, and it told my Dark Green brothers that we could be "solid" even if we sometimes felt like we wanted to fight each other. No civilian will ever understand that. You can be brothers, and love each other, even when you sometimes want to beat the shit out of the guy next to you because he might not be the same color as you.
