Shout out to Rog for getting the footage on screen.
Jamie pull up that super 8 footage of Mike McGill.
I'm not even a skater and I love these podcasts.
please correct me if i'm wrong. this trick might used to called mctwist, but by modern standards this is a 540. for a mctwist nowadays you have to be inverted.
I always thought 540 as the generic term.
It's true that some do it more like a 540 spin, and some do it more like a 180 spin with a front flip. I prefer the latter. Gator probably had amongst the best ones like that (his Miller Flips were like that too).
Mctwist is a mute grab 540 and McGill was the 1st and best, hands down. Any other grab is a 540. Please learn your skate history and terminology. Mike deserves the name, respect and recognition. Practically a flip with a twist, so sick.
I feel a 540 is more of a spin whereas a mctwist is more on a twisting / upside down move.
You see 540’s where they aren’t fully upside down.
I was 10 yrs old and my friend who got McGill board when i started we shared it. Gleaming the cube movie why I started skaterboarding. McGill did the mctwist in the movie.
I remember seeing the magazine sequence. I was blown away. Skateboarding was brought to a new level.
McGill has always seemed like a great guy from when I first saw him 86-ish onwards. He was such a massive figure and hasn't been ruined by that level of fame (crowds of demented kids at a demo screaming for a twist).
I was at the Eurocana Skate Camp in Hägersten, Stockholm when Mike did the the first McTwist 1984!
Lol. Right.
I always though you had to go upside down for it to be a McTwist.
Upside down was a helicopter. Tony Hawk used to spin em straight rotation. He was techy robot. Then the tight 720. Upside down was style. Hawk was tech.
I looked at it as a sort of hack to complete the spin. I knew a guy who practiced them for six months on a couch
Originally it was just a 540 but now it's become more of an inverted 540.
Mike is cool. I actually need some wheels and bearings I think I’ll go down to his shop and support those guys.🤘
I remember meeting Mike in Tulsa in 1989. I asked him when he invented the McTwist. He replied “summer of ‘84!” It was a joyous moment!
It's kind of crazy to see how he's developed it over the years too.
That early footage just shows it as a 540, which was wild at the time because it hadn't been done. Now it's a distinctly different trick by being an inverted and stylish 540.
I'd say it's arguably one of best looking tricks when done clean. Like the tre flip of vert/grab tricks.
you know he's a pro if he's saying 9ft transition and one foot ftof vert is small 😂
In the context of a ramp with vertical, a 9' radius is quite small by even late 1980s standards. I've skated miniramps with a 9' radius (maybe 6' or 7' high), and they are gloriously big.
A true legend
My favourite versions of the McTwist were more like a 180 spin with a front flip, as McGill did them. Hawk's early versions were more of a 540 spin for example.
180 spin with a flip would be a flare tho, even in the clip they played he's clearly doing a 540
@@SpaceNigs I've never heard of a flare so I googled it. All I found was a scooter move called a flair which is a back flip with a half twist. I then realized that BMXers probably have the same move because of the nature of having handlebars, and there it was. I tried to seek out actual skateboarders trying this and found some awkward attempts. A McTwist on a skateboard would be more akin to a front flip with a half twist.
the footage of the first mctwist looks like the inversion was just an accident because mike was trying to get through that first half of the spin too quick.
What’s crazier, is he went and pulled it off at the Del Mar pool.
Corn on the cob
Used to love skateboarding until I broke my ankle going off a jump in the neighborhood. Then got laughed at and walked home on a broken ankle in 6th grade. Focused on football basketball and baseball after that lol.
Get a board and just roll. It's the best. Sidewalk surfing. Go fast. Good wheels & bearings.
Invented the trick from Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, and Rodney Mullens?!?
Quarter pounder with cheese
Skating is awesome.
I’ve always associated the McTwist with Tony Hawk.
My first board. The PP Mike McGill board with that crappy material it was made out of. I forgot what they called it but the moment it got a drop of water on it pure disintegration!
Not great for street skating in NY. 😂
They called it Bonite. The decks were 5 ply with 2 layers of yorkite sandwiched between that looked like tap paper. Def not good for east coast street skaters.
I think Lance had the best McTwist. Hosoi was bad ass too. Helicopter. Gator had a mean one too. Oh, & Mike McGill did a nice one. Ha ha.
I think it was Lance who said once in an interview that he felt he was done when he first saw it, but he practiced his ass off.
On the "vice" John cardiel...documentary..there's a clip of him doing the mctwist....
@@barclaydonaldson8863 All Hail Cardiel. Padless too right?
@@erichanhauser3190 ...your Damm right....!!! All hail....the dude is a inspiration!!! Always
I used to be a skater like you. Then I took a board to the knee.
Should have got the kneepad dlc
And 1st like wins a million dollars and ps5 right? That's what I heard lol
Um 1st?
Please get Lester on the show!
