He finally found happiness when he found Jesus Christ. In this video, he is saying that all of the money, fame and material things, are just an "empire of dirt." It really won't bring true happiness. His wife, also a famous country western singer, died a while before Johnny, and then he died after making this epic video. There is a real message to be had. God Bless
I cried so much when I saw this because I knew he was saying goodbye. June was his soul mate. He went through so much. Losing his older brother Jack when Jack was 13 yrs old. He was cut down his torso by a saw in a mill. Johnny's father told him it should have been you not Jack. That pain stayed with him. 😢

In case you don't know, this is a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. It's incredible how Johnny made this electronica rock song into a heart wrenching ballad. Highly recommend his autobiography Cash and/or watching Walk the Line because his story is very interesting. Most of his songs are more fun and less gut punchy than this one but it is a masterpiece.

The small white house he walked around was where he lived as a child. I read he came to realize how all the money spent on booze, etc, had been such a waste. I grew up listening to his music, dad was a huge country music fan. I can still sing along with a few, even after all these years.

RIP June and John R. Cash was an American country singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contains themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career. As his career was taking off in the late 1950s, Cash started drinking heavily and became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. For a brief time, he shared an apartment in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, who was deeply addicted to amphetamines. Cash would use the stimulants to stay awake during tours. Cash's journey included rediscovery of his Christian faith. He took an "altar call" in Evangel Temple, a small church in the Nashville area, pastored by Reverend Jimmie Rodgers Snow, son of country music legend Hank Snow.

Mr. Cash is correct we all "Go away in the end" from dust we came and to dust we will return. Johnny realized that as his life grew closer to the end. We came into this World with nothing and we will take nothing with us when we our time comes. That's why he said in the song "You can have it all my Empire of dirt" Johnny made peace with God and His only Son Jesus towards the end of his days. I pray and hope you do as well, life is fleeting, however eternity is real choose wisely. ✝️

I'm in my 40's, I served in the Infantry, and this song makes me break down EVERY TIME.
In case you don't know, this is a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. It's incredible how Johnny made this electronica rock song into a heart wrenching ballad. Highly recommend his autobiography Cash and/or watching Walk the Line because his story is very interesting. Most of his songs are more fun and less gut punchy than this one but it is a masterpiece.

As a side note to Cash's life, while he was stationed in Europe at an Air Force listening post Johnny was the first American to learn of the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953.

I went to The House of Cash when I was 8 on our family vacation.
this was his last song. His wife died only weeks later and he died about 3 months after.
Music producer Rick Ruben approached Johnny with this song, but Johnny refused to cover it. He had to keep insisting before finally convincing Johnny to do it.
Try "God will cut you down" by him. Amazing.

Yes. It is an emotional song. Johnny knew stuff in life can’t bring happiness or fulfillment. Good mews is that he and his wife gave themselves to Jesus and spent a handful of years singing about this. Purpose comes only from Christ.

The small white house he walked around was where he lived as a child. I read he came to realize how all the money spent on booze, etc, had been such a waste. I grew up listening to his music, dad was a huge country music fan. I can still sing along with a few, even after all these years.
Johnny and June Cash both died a few months after this video.
Unfortunately, that "House of Cash" museum burned down a few years after John and June Cash passed away.
That was his wife June. She died about 4 months before him.
